STORY TIME: I was 23 when I went to the first Detroit Music Festival held at Comerica Park Sept 1, 2001. It was an all day thing. The featured artists were Missy Elliott, Ginuwine, Tank, Erick Sermon, Maze Feat. Frankie Beverly, and the Isley Brothers, with Luther Vandross as the headliner. Well Maze got out there and ripped the stage something terrible. They even sang Golden Time of Day as the sun went down, PERFECT. Then the Isley's came out and jerked, what remained of, the nails and floor boards right off the stage, just destroyed the scene. I think they even snatched the lights. Ernie Isley played that guitar until God himself peeked through the clouds to get a look at the audacity of a mortal to play that well. So by the time Luther was set to come out, the poor guy didn't have anywhere to stand because those two acts dismantled the stage and killed all his confidence. DO... YOU ...KNOW Luther did not want to come out to perform?!! It was getting late, people were tired and cranky, all the young people, who wanted to see the younger acts, had long since left the park, but the mixed crowd still wanted to see Luther. HE MADE US WAIT nearly 40 min while his people tried to talk him on to the stage. People were hot 😡. He eventually came out but the mood was somber. He barely got an applause. Detroit is notorious for being a tougher than tough crowd. They showed no mercy that night, even for the great Luther Vandross.
