This song hits home for me, as I am sure it does many others. I have my degree in accounting and have been very unhappy for years now sitting behind a computer looking at numbers. One night a couple of years ago, I was driving around, listening to Alexis and Boiled Frogs finally hit me. Thanks to this song, I am about 9 months away from being able to apply to career fire departments as a firefighter.
The title of the song "Boiled frogs" is a concept lifted from the screamer George's fathers life. The story is that his father worked his whole life and when he neared retirement the company that he worked for gradually gave him more and more work for him to crack and quit - making him ineligible for his pension. The idea of boiled frogs is that if you place a frog in a pot of water and slowly turn the heat up gradually, the frog will not notice until the water is too hot and it will eventually die in it.
Dude could have only taken like 35 hours a week.... Courts protect workers rights cant fire someone for not working alot... Its illegal. But, hindsights 20/20 ive been in situations like this now approaching 40 though good luck pulling the wool over my eyes now im a verbal paper work savage... Lul
Didn't know about George's father. I hope he's doing well now. This is why the song is so relatable: it's true, as many of Alexisonfire's songs. Their songs helped me in many times of my life
Man...I always loved this song, been jamming out to it since 2007 when I was just out of high school....but it just hits you so much differently when you're in your thirties and you're already just absolutely at wits end with the monotony of life. AOF forever man 🤘❤️
Strange how even though none of the members of Alexisonfire have ever been stuck at a mundane desk job or (I'm assuming) ever been homeless, yet they still manage to put themselves in the shoes of others and deliver lyrics that are as honest as someone who is in that situation. Amazing :D
"Between the light and shallow waves is where I'm going to die" I always interpreted these lyrics as a slow and uneventful death, surrounded by what we perceived as safe, yet dull, comforting, but betraying.
It seems like a more realistic interpretation now that you mention it. But the way it's presented in the song, after a 2x chorus of self-affirmation, personally I feel it more as an ideal to where the narrator wants to end up, satisfied and closing their eyes for the last time, on their own terms.
The lyrics resonate more than ever! I'll be 46 in November haha. But I packed up 11 years ago and moved to Vietnam, became my own boss, stopped worrying about careers and living a "buttoned down life", best decision I ever made.
This is my "lucky song." I'm nearing my 30s and life is not looking good for me at all, but I'm not giving up yet. I feel like this will be my anthem until I either give up or die. 🤘🏼
I was in jr high when this song used to be played on much music lol used to come home from school in the afternoon and after dinner around 6:00-9 I would watch music videos on my tv on much music lol I’m 25 and this song helps me never give up on life and makes me go through a new chapter!!
thanks for translating George's vocals! i know it's not necessary to understand what he's screaming ( the SOUND of his voice is the instrument ) but it's still cool to see it alexisonfire are truly something special--and they make me proud to be a Canuck
Such a fantastic band. One underrated part of the band l think is their awesome lyrics. The tinman line is one of my favourite ever lyrics. Seems to be like a euphemism for someone trying their hardest to succeed but they're being held back by something. Also, this is their best song for sure.
ughhh im so jealous i saw dallas when he played in toronto in june and im DYING to go see him play again hes fkn amazing live. I saw alexis in decemeber though and they were soooo good!
Legends Never Die. They just find a signal to carry their song. Sometimes they find a disenfranchised person who pumps the speaker. In that moment the song keeps going.
How cool is a song that way back in the day encapsulated an idea so real that the people leading the great resignation are the same people who were just old enough to start working when this song came out... Thanks alexisonfire, you adulted for me before I could for my self.
I don't have all the same "things" and "security" as some people my age but I do a job I genuinely love and am trying to build a career in it. I'm thankful to God every day that this is the case.
I’m in the same boat. Although sometimes I think that it’s better to go to college for something you don’t enjoy doing, making money, then regretting it and wanting to do something else. At least there’s no struggle financially. I’ve been poor and mentally tormented. Better to be stable and mentally tormented. I think that’s why people like us are thankful when we get a job we don’t entirely hate. Not the dream gig, but it’s something.
This song goes so well with themes in Fight Club. We're the middle children of history. No great war, no great depression. Our great war is the spiritual war. Our great depression is our lives. I made the dumb mistake of listening to my parents decades ago that you go to school, you go to university, you get a good paying job, and you'll be satisfied. 20 years in and I work 60+ hours a week, am underpaid and under constant threat of being laid off, fired, or forced to quit. I hate my job. I hate what it's done to my health, my social interactions and I have nothing to show for it. I've already told my kids to do what they love, be that a janitor, a welder, a soldier, a police officer, a historian, an academic, whatever it is. Money might be tight sometimes, but doing what you love will make you happiest. Remember that. Having lots of money in the bank but hating what you do to get it is not fulfilling.
the light. I believe their situations are also reflected in the lines "Youth sold for a pension cheque ... he can't say no." George did an interview talking about how in the last year of his father's work, they were trying to force him out, but he stuck around for his pension cheque. So they have a way out of something miserable (ie. they can quit their jobs) but they choose to stay. Meanwhile, Dallas finds a gold watch, which is usually given when one retires. It seems like a gift to try to
Put this on cus its 5 in the morning, ive had no sleep and need to be at work in an hour so i wanted something to get me hyped up but after listening to it im just thinking fuck work its bullshit
This is just a guess, but I think a lot of the video is centred around the "safe in monotony" line. The video shows George working, Wade in prison, and Chris swimming towards a light, all clearly unhappy with their situations. Each is presented with a way out -- George wakes up in a grocery store; Wade finds that the prison gate is wide open; and Chris reaches the light. None of them take the way out: George runs out of the store; Wade willingly walks back into prison; and Chris doesn't reach
My youth is slipping away. Calgary at Mac Hall a number of years ago, crowd surfing and George grabbed my hand, and said those lyrics. Then I got kicked out for crowd surfing🤣. Ended up breaking back I to the show. Was not gonna miss that
when i look back at this video, the directional photography is so fucking on point with George's scenes. It makes the pressure of his life seem so fucking real its not even funny.I think it has alot to do with the above the shoulder shots (simply put)
The video is clearly just about the ways people waste their lives. Factory work, office work, prison, sitting at home doing nothing. While someone else is trying to swim to surface for air.
In 2012, roughly more than 10 years ago, I found out that my friend and coworker was killed in the Dark Knight Massacre. Worst night of my life hands down - I'm also an alcoholic. My friend that died once spent like an hour or more talking to me about my drinking. He was the first person ever that I ever had an honest conversation about my drinking problem with. The night I found out he was gone, I have never ever gotten so drunk. I kept playing Crisis by Alexisonfire over and over for literally hours till the sun was about up. I especially kept listening to Mailbox Arson and Boiled Frogs. Im in AA now, and Im an atheist cause of indoctrination by a public school teacher. So I've always struggled with what my higher power is. Listening to this song again just now I just realized my friend (who died as a Navy sailor that saved two lives that night in the movie theater, shielding his girlfriend with his own body. Died a damn hero) is my higher power.
wow, i just watched the movie Office Space. The video is so similar, especially the opening. The song is the whole premise to the film. and plus George looks exactly like the main star!. Watch It!
I've been listening to this song for about 2 years non-stop. It's the 1st time I've watched the video! A bit strange how the music begins 1 minute in. I liked how the video captured life from different perspectives. The mixing of the guitar is quite off in the 2nd part of the chorus, but I loved how surreal it got in the middle. AOF have released a bunch of new songs. Not as good as their old stuff but pretty damn decent for a band who's been around 10+ years! Hears hoping for another album, & if it's as good as Dog's Blood, I'll be a happy chappy! =)
This song was awesome when they played it @ London & Toronto Ontario. I posted some vids' of their recent / last show on their tour with billy talent, the cancer bats and against me.
I think it's a comparison to show that the guy in the workplace is like the/a prisoner. Or to say that he pretty much is a prisoner. & at the end they free themselves from that life of imprisonment :) I like the part with the watch in the box that says "25 years", too. Watch it again ^.^
