Very instructional! A great advice I got about audio interfaces a long time ago, is that you should buy one with more features then you need right now. It's very likely you will need more inputs or outputs, or whatever feature is has in the future. 10 years later I still use the first audio interface I ever bought.
Total beginner taking an intro class soon, as well as a teacher trying to learn some tricks for my students' performances: this was so informative and interesting, subscribed!
Before this video, I knew nothing about audio interfaces. This video did a great job of giving me the basic understanding of the audio interface. Matthew, you did a great job with this video.
i have a behringer UMC204HD, had inserts, midi in and out, runs on usb, line and instrument on each channel, phantom pawer, pads and sep headphone vol control... amazing unit. Has MIDAS pre amps.
Great advice. This is really intimidating, but; at the same time lots of fun. I've learned more about my interface by just experimenting rather than relying solely on the user manual.
i see a setup where a mixer is connected to an audio interface. Can a mixer just go straight to computer? What's the purpose of the audio interface there?
@@MatthewStratton Hey mate, I'm a sound editing beginner and have been enjoying your videos. I was curious if I need an audio interface while using my mpk mini play with mpc beats as I'm using a Mac not windows I was wondering if the disadvantages still apply?
I wonder if you can help me sir, im a dj wanting to record high quality mixes, i have a Denon prime 2 all in one mixer which is connected from the master to 2 Lioneer monitors via xlr, i also have 2 rca stereo outs and two booth outs xlr, i have a scarlett 2i2 and am wondering the best way to record my mixes via Audacity or whatever software you reccomend. Amy help would be greatly received..Thanks
Thank you great video sorry I'm French; I have a question I play music on an iPad (nobody is perfect) how to connect my iPad to the foscurite box to have a sound without crackling because by connecting to a microphone output of the computer the sound is very bad have you a solution for me
Not clear if is it specific reason to buy second one "3rdgen" and why you need it if you have Zoom 12 channels? Is this one better? That black glossy plastic - they need to include microfiber cloth to clean it up (I just have those black glossy design)
Hello I'm very new to music production...I currently have MPK mini and using mpc beats on a computer....I do not have a microphone or audio interface...cuz I have my hands full with learning the program... my question is.. Do I need an audio interface? Or does the mpc beats comes with?
If you are getting by right now without one and you don’t need to record any vocals or instruments then you probably don’t need one right now. There will likely be a time when you want to record a vocals or instruments or connect studio monitors up. Then you will need one to get a good strong audio signal in and out of your computer.
It’s something that’s sitting on my desk, as I haven’t figured it out. I’m still making crappy drum cover on an EAD10. I have a Focusrite 18i20 3rd gen. I also have a Model 24. I can hear my drums through the headphones, but can’t get it to record. Please do a step by step vid on recording drums. Even better, on how to make drum covers. And if you want to be an all star, show how to do a drum cover with video.
Lets say you like to record a video for example a violin or guitar solo from the focusrite into an ipad or iphone and you like to have a bit of reverb in the sound you need a mixer table is that possible to connect and record it?
When i plug my condenser mic straight into the pc and use it without interface i hear hissing noise, what does the interface do to my microphone? i just want clear sounding for vocals
It depends on the mic you have. Condenser mics usually run on phantom power. For example the rode nt1 needs phantom power and if you try to plug it into the computer directly it will not work properly. The audio interface in the video provides phantom power and the ability to control the gain of the mic to get a proper signal for recording.
what advantages to have this between an audio line level in from mixer and a computer sound card and on to vmix software for live stream? Can you help me understand if any benefits for this route?
bro u did a great job explaining this vid....but i am 100% confused, i dont even know if i NEED this XD im so new to all this. All i have is a laptop speakers and a AKAI MPK3 Mini thats it. Do i Need this? O.o
Omg Thank you Thank you so so much Sir..🙏🙏🙏❤.This video is the 100% truly described how to use a interface than any other videos on Yt.Im your fan Sir.I have subscribed to you.🙏🙏🙏❤
Hi Matt, if I have a USB mixer Yamaha MG 12XU, is it worth to invest an extra Audio Interface to record music? Or Is it just a waste of money? Thanks 🙏
Will this work with 2 turntables and a mixer...I want to record but be able to listen to play back without losing recording levels....I'm new to audio interfaces.
You can send a line out of your mixer and record into the computer with an audio interface like this. Your mixer likely has a "line" level out. So just make sure the audio interface you get has a "line" level input, preferably 2 line level inputs so you can record stereo from your mixer.
I bought this version few weeks ago but my interface just working like stereo, the left channel sounds only in the left side and right channel only in the right side. Do you know what's happening? I'm trying to use this interface for livestream in my iPhone.
I`m pretty new to audio interfaces so this is probably going to be a noob question. will an audio interface improve the audio quality of my cheap mic that has mic interference?
Greetings Matthew, Thanks for the video. In my setup, I’m using the Akai MPC X and I want to record vocals via the audio tracks. I purchased the MXL Mics 770 Cardioid Condenser Microphone and I am using an XLR Female to 1/4 Inch 6.35mm TRS Plug Balanced Interconnect Cable, XLR to Quarter inch Patch Cable to plug into input 1 (rear) of the MPC X. I connected and plugged in the microphone, switched on the phantom power and I’m not getting a signal on the MPC X meters or sounds out of my monitors. I’m wondering, after watching your video, should I get an audio interface? Please advise. Thank you.
You likely need a XLR to XLR cable to use the phantom power on the MPC X as I don't believe the 1/4" jack on the MPC X sends phantom power. You do not need another interface. I have successfully recording into the MPC X using a condenser mic using phantom power with the XLR M to XLR F cable like this: amzn.to/30DZrmE
Matthew Stratton Thanks for the response Matthew. I also have a cable like the one you recommended but the MPC X doesn’t have XLR input. That’s why I decided to use the 1/4 inch connector on the XLR Mic cable. At your earliest convenience, can you do a quick video on microphone connections to the MPC X please. Thank you for your help. Peace ✌🏾
There are two xlr inputs on the back of the MPC X. They are combo inputs meaning you can plug quarter inch cables into the same input as well. Try plugging your XLR cable into one if those inputs, there are 2 of them.
Matthew Stratton Thanks Man!!! 👊🏾 I’m learning more and more about this instrument. This is clever how Akai did this. I totally overlooked this feature.
Yes. You need to make sure you have enough inputs. If all you needed was stereo out of the MPC and the Microphone then the Scarlett 4i4 would do it: amzn.to/2BYMidt . If you want to add other things like more synths and more outputs from the MPC then more inputs is the way to go.
Thanks for this - helpful! Just about to purchase one I think. Do you have any videos on live-streaming music (vocals and guitar) using an interface like this? How can I EQ it? Thanks! X b
Most quality mics use XLR cables, and you need an audio interface with XLR inputs to connect to it. Also the audio quality is bumped up alot, and you can use condenser mics (which require electricity through the XLR cable provided from the audio interface).
Love that sign on your door. The key to ANY success in life.
For sure. 💯

Hi Matthew, what's the difference between MIDI cable and the instrument cable (like the guitar one you showed in this video)?
MIDI cable transfers MIDI data only, no audio. Instrument cable transfers an audio signal for instruments.

a lot of these pro's are promoting the hell out the scarlett 2i2!
I've used it for years and it has held up, my Scarlett 2i2 1st generation still works too.

on the front there is a switch direct monitor
Is the Audio Interface needed to use your headphones on MPC?
If you have a hardware MPC like the MPC X you can use the headphone jack on there when in controller mode if you want.
I`m pretty new to audio interfaces so this is probably going to be a noob question.
will an audio interface improve the audio quality of my cheap mic that has mic interference?
If your mic is a USB mic and has no way of connecting to an audio interface, then, an audio interface will not help.
Is a Lexicon Alpha an audio interface that I can use?
Yes. I used to use it many years ago.
