A Gem, Indeed!! This band is phenomenal! Must do Hellbound Train!! It is a complete vibe! Musicianship at it's finest! That's a back yard, cigar, whiskey, hammock song for Jay!!
This entire album is called street corner talking and it is an absolute gem and you can grab any song of that album to jam to for sure one of my absolute favorite albums because I don’t have to work with the skip button
Thanks. What a journey down memory lane. I was a teenager when they hit the scene in the 60's and still have their album,Hellbound Train(1972). They actually were active until 2022 when the founding member,Kim Simmonds, passed away. There's a lot of info about them on Wikipedia. Tell Mama is their most recognizable song. They were a blues band,so their fans fit a specific niche. Either you liked them or you didn't. They toured for nearly 60 years,so there you go.
Wow! Savoy Brown! One of my very favorite bands from my college days! Every other dorm room I went by would have this song playing. This is the album that came out after Lonesome Dave and the others left to form Foghat. Kim Simmonds is the guitarist and Savoy Brown was his band. He passed away about a year ago but kept playing and recording until the end. I actually got to see him a couple of times after I moved to Maine a few years back, he still knew how to rock out! Peace! (My recommendation for another song would be "Leaving Again", lots of guitar and Lonesome Dave is singing on it. Foghat covered it on their first album, a harder rock version)
savoy brown's history went back decades. They were a passionate but consistently unsettled blues rock band who changed lead singers like the rest of us change our socks. My favorite song "I've Had Enough Of Getting Shot in the Head".
This is a great song. The ultimate Savoy Brown recording is their version of Louisiana Blues. It's sixties British Blues guitar jamming at it's finest!
I was hoping you would get to Savoy Brown. Tell Mama is a great one to start with and I'm glad you did the album track and not the cut down radio version. There were a lot of personnel changes over the years. A Hard Way to Go, Street Corner Talking and Wang Dang Doodle are good ones to follow up with. Lots of great stuff. Hellhound Train is my favorite and will blow your minds. By the way, the accent on Savoy is slightly on the Sa and not the voy. Kim Simmonds kept the band going until recently. He passed last December just after turning 75.
This was and is a classic by Etta James and written mainly by blues singer Clarence Carter. He origally did the song first, but it was called "Tell Daddy"
The Band Started off in England back in the 60's but eventually moved to the US. Great band, great music. the next song to react to should be "Hellbound Train".
"Inside Looking Out" is a great early Savoy Brown album, probably from 1970 or 71. An old friend went to a Savoy Brown concert about 10 years ago and got a "live" recording of that concert and got them to autograph it for me, telling them I was s BIG Savoy Brown fan back in our high school days in the early 70s.
I FIRST SAW SAVOY BROWN IN DECEMBER 1968---FLEETWOOD MAC WITH PETER GREEN AND JEREMY SPENSER--WARMED THEM UP. THEIR GREATEST LP/ALBUM IS "BLUE MATTER". MY SAVOY BROWN PLAYLIST IS FIRST CLASS.
You guys do a great job finding old rock snd you always love it. Just imagine how fun it was to experience all this new when it came out. I was 10 years old in 1966 heard it all from Beatles to Pink Floyd and everything in between 👍
I saw them with their original lineup in the late 60's. They had a cult following in Maine where I lived. Their live album Blue Matter was a big hit but only in the "cult". The core of Savoy formed Foghat and this band was the second iteration of SB. Guitarist Kim Simmons was their heart. There is a video of them doing this live and Kim absolutely shreds on slide. An unsung guitar god
They were a great band. I first saw them play in 1969 at the Boston Tea Party in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They called themselves the Savoy Brown Blues Band back then, and the opening act was some new blues band I never heard of called "Santana Blues Band". 😊 I saw them a few times in 1970 too. The band was always changing personnel, but they were fairly stable from around '68 to '71. By the time this song came out there was only one original member left, Kim Simmonds. He was the founder and leader of the band right up until his death last year. Despite all then changes in the band Simmonds still kept a pretty consistent blues sound to it, and the musicians were always top notch. Kind of reminded me of John Mayall's band. It had an interesting history. Two members left to form Fogheart. Other band members were from, or later worked with, a number of popular bands, including John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Yes, Joe Perry Project and a few others. And one of their early bass players, Bob Brunning, was the first bassist for Peter Green's Flettwood Mac.
About time someone did a reaction to Savoy Brown, I have been wondering why, thought maybe people were getting copyright strikes. You have a group here with a deep library of great songs.
Kim Simmonds’ lead guitar and Paul Raymond’s keyboards, guitar and vocals and Dave Walker’s lead vocals were so great! I know y’all have reacted to Uriah Heep a couple of times…….. While attending New Mexico State in Las Cruces, we drove to El Paso, Texas, about an hour drive on a Thursday night in November of 1972 to see Savoy Brown….and Uriah Heep in concert. The surprise opening act was a band that was just starting to gain recognition….. ZZ Top!! What a show!!
I saw them play many times over the years, including last year before Kim's death, one of my alltime favorite bands, and one of my alltime favorite guitarists.. RIP
Did 'Street Corner Talking' with my first band. Saw them at the El Mocambo in '76(?) where the Stones would record a side of a live album a couple years later - (sadly didn't win advance tickets to the surprise show, just after Keith's smack bust, in the radio contest) - and where one of SRV's most legendary performances took place. The bass player, his GF and I got the boot for smoking hash at our table stageside.😅😊
Greetings from Northern maine thanks for reacting to savoy brown one of my faves by them try hellbound train as your next teaction to them will blow you away enjoying this musical journey amber and jay keep on rockin!
Great song from a very underrated band. Kim Simmonds was the man in Savory Brown. Great guitarist who was the last man standing from the band, but he kept it going for decades. Got to see them once at a blues festival & Kim was fantastic. Also guys, three of four members of Foghat came from Savoy Brown. Lonesome Dave Peverett, Roger Earle & Tone Stevens. Next for Savory Brown should definitely be Hellbound Train
We just recently lost the great Kim Simmonds, guitarist and founding member that was the only member to play in all the different versions of this band. A couple members from Savoy Brown left to form Foghat. My favorite album of theirs was Jack The Toad, but the only one I own now is Hellbound Train. Good choice, but there's a lot of good Savoy Brown out there, if you want some more.
@@jameskirschling7887 When those guys left most people thought it was the end of SB. But Kim Simmonds didn't want it to end so he went to work. He raided the band Chicken Shack, recruiting their rhythm section & keyboardist Paul Raymond. He then found a great singer, Dave Walker, playing in London pubs & signed him up. This version of the band put out 2 of the groups best selling albums, Street Corner Talking and Hellbound Train.
Savoy Brown came from on of those earlier talent show way before American Idol! I think it was Star Search with Ed Mc Mann from the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson!
Off the same album "Street corner Talkin" there's a song " All I Can Do Is Cry " You have to play that one. In the summer of '71 that was one of our party album and we wore the grooves out of the LP. Members of the band went on to play with a noted band called Foghat also.
Lonesome Dave Peverette (Guitarist/singer) and Roger Earl (Drummer) left Savoy Brown in 1971 and formed Foghat! Two great bands. Other songs are: Hellbound Train - All I can DO - Street Corner Talking - Wang Dang Doodle - Let it Rock - Poor Girl - Lost and Lonely Child - I Can't get Next to You (Their version). Enjoy this rabbit hole of great music...
If you all loved this, certainly understandable, check out Potliquor and their great album from 1973 (my Sr year of HS) titled Louisiana Rock & Roll. It’s southern, bluesy, rocky, swampy etc etc and I have no doubt you two will love it. Every song is great just like every song on this album along with Hellbound Train, another great one by Savoy Brown. Savoy Brown morphed into Foghat which I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t know. Great reaction! Love your channel and have for a few years now.
Back in college, there were two camps re: which was the best Brit blues band at that time: Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac vs. Savoy Brown. I was a Savoy Brown-er but have since switched to FM. Still though this is one hot tune. Glad you are going down this rabbit hole. Kim Simmons is still performing. "Poor Girl" or "Looking In" are good follow-up tunes. Glad you dug it. ❤❤❤
Kim Simmonds passed away in December of last year. Saw them play just before Covid hit, they were down to a very tight 3 piece band by then but were still cranking out some great albums.
Wonderfully wide catalogue of music that Kim (RIP) led. Love this band in all its forms. For a different slow blues vibe, please review 'Love me please' from the album Lion's Share. N.B. They had some great album artwork.
Kim Simmonds….he was at the El Mocombo in Toronto one night back in the late 70’s…and was playing to about 20 people….I felt so bad…because damn…he was fire on the lead..
Rob Squad are doing Savoy Brown! That 'band' was really Kim Simmonds as the lead guitarist, songwriter, occasional vocalist and band leader and whomever was in the band at the time, personnel came and went (3 of the 4 original members of Foghat were Kim's backing band for a few albums before Foghat). He always had great sidemen, no matter who was in the band. First time I saw them was on this tour, Tell Mama was a big hit for them at the time and he had a stellar band including Dave Walker on vocals and the great Paul Raymond on keyboards/guitar, who moved onto the classic UFO lineup a couple years later, also in the band. They have tons of great songs scattered over many a album but the records Looking In and Hellbound Train are utter classics. You should do Poor Girl from the former and the title track from the later for more goodness from Kim and company. Also saw them on the Boogie Brothers album tour when he had 2 other lead guitars, they were playing IN the audience at times with extremely long extender cords for their guitars, long before wireless, it allowed you the freedom to get into the crowd. Lastly saw them a little over 20 years ago in a packed bar of around 500 lucky souls, as he had a new, hard rocking band that revisited all his past hits and you can see that tour on You Tube, he was still killing it then. Great choice exploring Savoy Brown, with recent UFO and Free videos you guys are hitting some real deep Rock we all loved, please don't go too long between songs from these 3 tremendous bands, you have no clue about the utter greatness ahead. They all have songs that have been blowing my mind for a half century. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎷🎶
Hey guys. Loved watching your review and reaction to this song. One of my favorite British rock bands. The other song of theirs I really like is Hellbound Train. Same album. I think their best work was from from Street Corner Talking album. Glad you guys reacted to little bit of artistry. Right on... Keep us the good work. Thank you.
There were three great blues rock bands I loved in the Sixties (and still do!). Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack and Savoy Brown. In fact, quite a few band members moved between these three groups over the years. Train to Nowhere is a nice track from SB’s early years, and Hellbound Train from a bit later. I actually like the Kiln House album - very underrated release after Peter Green left the group. Try Hi Ho Silver for a raunchy sound! As for Chicken Shack, there are so many good songs, from out and out blues, to fun rock and a spell as a heavy power trio too. Try Poor Boy off the Imagination Lady album for the heavy stuff! Three rabbit holes there to enjoy exploring.
A certain Paul Raymond spent some time in Savoy Brown. Who is he you may ask? well he joined UFO in 1977 and had a phenominal career with them, a truly great musician.
As mentioned, Street Corner Talking is a great album. From the title track to Wang Dang Doodle to my favorite on it, I Can't Get Next to You, you can't go wrong listening to it all.
Oh! Boy! I have been pushing them for a bit. Good rabbit hole. Any song is great! Very diverse blues based with many incarnations. Kim Simmonds leads the band. One of my fav guitar players. Thanks! I recommend an earlier incarnation with the album Raw Sienna lotsa guitar and lotsa HORNS. I believe this incarnation became Foghat after Kim Simmonds moved to another sound. Savoy always has plenty of good guitar. This song is a bit more country based than most.
Finally! Savoy Brown. Still going strong, though sadly Kim Simmonds died last year. Glad you liked it. You should see the smiles on your faces. Watch their live version of Little Red Rooster at the Coach House to see an incredible talent most people have never heard of.
Saw Savoy back the early 70,'s. Thought it would a cool show with Faces as the opening act. Thinking it was gonna be Small Faces, but it was Faces with Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart on there first tour. Amazing show.
You can hear Kim Simmonds' (slide guitarist for this one/guy who kept the band together through the years) genius as early as the "Shake Down" album - check out SB's version of "Superstitious" or "Shake 'Em On Down" from that! The band was at its height with Chris Youlden as the vocalist; suggest checking out "I'm Tired" or "I'm Crying" from that era - magical :)
Great reaction. First heard this song performed by a local band (The Jordan Brothers) in the 70s and loved it at first listen. Give “Lost And Lonely Child “ a listen. Thank you both.
The slide guitarist is Kim Simmons, a great guitarist. This album, Hellbound Train and a really special album is Raw Sienna. Different lead singer for Street Corner, previous albums had Chris Yodlen, who has an amazing ,unique voice. On another note, I know you have been playing some Susan Tedeschi solo, but you really need to check out Tedeschi Trucks Band. They’re a 12 piece ensemble, 2 drummers, horn section, back up singers and Derek Trucks is one of the best guitarist, slide or otherwise you will ever hear. Had his own band, plus at the same time played with the Allman brothers 15 years, was asked by Clapton to tour with him for an year, not to mention Sue and Derek big friends of BB King and all sorts of blues artists. They are married and since 2010 have been playing together in their band. Need to see them live, try Don’t Let Me Slide and Midnight in Harlem from e town off you tube. Simply the best band around.
Alright my babies..... Now I've heard of the band but never heard any of their music. I do love me some slide guitar and these guys delivered the goods ‼️💯🔥😎👍🏼
Savoy Brown, great stuff. A really bluesy band. Kim Simmonds guitar work is legendary. Try "Train to Nowhere" as well as "Hellbound Train" maybe do a double track listen. Love that you guys appreciate the music I grew up with.
My friend and I saw Savoy Brown together with the Doobie Brothers freshman year of high school '72 …Yes ! I can definitely hear that Foghat connection. Got that Slow Ride riff in there !Great Pick guys 🎸🎧🎶🫶
This quintessentially southern-sounding song is from a south London band. The band only finally folded last December, following the death of lead singer Kim Simmonds. 58 yrs - not a bad lifespan for a band!
A Gem, Indeed!! This band is phenomenal! Must do Hellbound Train!! It is a complete vibe! Musicianship at it's finest! That's a back yard, cigar, whiskey, hammock song for Jay!!
Both albums are top notch. They pretty much morphed into Foghat I think.

Great album for sure!
That one and 'A Step Further'
Chris Youlden was better than Dave Walker . Raw sienna is probably their best although most of the earlier stuff is great 👍
Ditto. Don't forget albums "Lion's Share" or "Looking In", no track hopping there either. RIP Kim
Can’t mention Savoy Brown without mentioning Hellbound Train. A gem.
Train is a doomy extended blues rock classic.

Vocals by Dave Walker, who did a short stint in Fleetwood Mac. Their version of "Can't Get Next To You" from the same album is another gem.
This song has all the elements that make it easy to see how members eventually left the band, moved to the U.S. and formed Foghat.
They left the band before this song was recoded.

All I Can Do Is Cry from the album Street corner Talkin. a masterpiece
All i can say is i have 14 albums on vinyl of Savoy Brown. Saw Kim Simmonds twice at poor david pub in Dallas.
Has that Foghat sound before Foghat existed...Love it
A certain Paul Raymond spent some time in Savoy Brown.
Can't Get Next To You may arguably be the best Motown cover by a white band ever.
One of my favority Savoy Brown songs is "Made Up My Mind". You can find it here on TH-cam.
Oh!
Enjoyed the heck out of that!
Remember them well❤❤❤. IM 74YEARS OLD AND MY MEMORY ISN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE BUT I DO REMEMBER THIS
Three of these guys later left Savoy Brown and formed Foghat.
Love you guys!👍✌️🤗
What a gem
I was waiting for this one😊
Louisiana blues is a must!
Gritty is what I’d call this song, I love it😎
Savoy Brown, great stuff. A really bluesy band. Kim Simmonds guitar work is legendary. Try "Train to Nowhere" as well as "Hellbound Train" maybe do a double track listen. Love that you guys appreciate the music I grew up with.
Best slide guitar intro ever!
😮 Lonsome Dave was in Savoy Brown. And went onto Foghat 😂 he's already gone at this time.
Liked them both.
@@user-ot1eb6mt4kI hope they hit Stone Blue
My friend and I saw Savoy Brown together with the Doobie Brothers freshman year of high school '72 …Yes ! I can definitely hear that Foghat connection. Got that Slow Ride riff in there !Great Pick guys 🎸🎧🎶🫶
Their best jam is IMHO is ' Louisiana blues ' also for a different side of them is ' Train to nowhere '
Doin Fine and Hellbound Train are a couple must hits, but you could go into a pretty deep rabbit hole with these guys. Exceptional band! Cheers\=/\=/
Hellbound Train =🔥
That's right! Cheers\=/\=/@@vicprovost2561
This quintessentially southern-sounding song is from a south London band. The band only finally folded last December, following the death of lead singer Kim Simmonds. 58 yrs - not a bad lifespan for a band!
