Prophet Zakaria AS was a prophet from the Children of Israel who was famous for his piety and obedience to Allah. He was the father of Prophet Yahya AS and also a prophet whose job was to guide his people to stay on the right path.
Allah praised Prophet Zakaria AS in Surah Maryam (19:4-6) for his sincere prayer when asking for offspring in old age. Allah then answered his prayer with the birth of Prophet Yahya AS.
However, like other prophets, Prophet Zakaria AS faced a lot of rejection from his people. The Children of Israel were known as a people who often killed the prophets sent to them (QS Al-Baqarah 2:61 and 2:91).
When Prophet Zakaria AS was hiding in a tree, Satan came to the executioners of the Children of Israel and told them where he was hiding. After finding out where Prophet Zakaria AS was hiding, the unjust people immediately brought large saws and began to cut open the tree and the body of Prophet Zakaria AS in it.
According to history, Prophet Zakaria AS remained patient and did not make a sound of pain, until he finally died as a martyr.
