You helped me understand this COMPLETE system, almost a full year after I bought it and kept it on the shelf. Well after I thought about it, and said, "Yeah, I know what I'm doing!" Now, you helped me test it out! I'm ready for the trail! THANKS!
Just received my Sawyer Squeeze and came to YT to get some info on how to go about using it properly and set up. Your video was spot on. Thanks very much. Subscribed as well.
Rewatching all your TA posts again . . . Now we’re out of C19 and all caught up on life, time to prioritise those things promised to ourself during those lost years.
Fantastic! I hope you find the videos helpful. Also check out the TA section n my site. I'm still building things up over there, but there's a few helpful resources etc. too!
This is a great video, I'm about to head off to the wilderness for a few days and have never used one of these things before, your demo cleared up all the questions I had. Thanks!
Michelle: I apologize if somebody already mentioned this. But as a general principle, I want to keep "contaminated" equipment in my backpack to a minimum. The gravity hookup you proposed contaminates the hose and all the fittings. Assuming it works, I would instead connect the Squeeze directly to the bag and the hose to the outflow. That way, clean water runs through the hose and the fittings. The only contaminated parts are the bag and its cap (and, of course, the business end of the Squeeze).
@@LongWhiteGypsy I'd be very interested in a Grayl Geopress or Ultralight review. I was underwhelmed by the Lifestraw, which was the only one I had tried before the Sawyer Squeeze.
Yes that's right! The mind boggles at those kinds of figures! I certainly have not had any problems with it yet, and if I was drinking from questionable sources all the time I wouldn't carry anything else. For most of the hiking I do in NZ I now use the Katadyn BeFree, but to be honest there's not much difference between the two - the Sawyer is just a little more durable and filters more.
Awesome! Glad to hear it. Just remember you'll need to keep it well protected if you are hiking in cold conditions. I've experienced the flow rate slowing down if the temperatures drop overnight!
When gravity feeding I noticed that you had a lot of the dirty water leaking down the filter. This could be very dangerous because the dirty water could make its way into the clean water bottle. Better to get a good seal or, if that isn't possible, angle the filter line so it doesn't leak directly into the bottle anymore. Definitely not taking a poo on your video. Very informative and helpful. Just wanted to share that warning with anybody who may be watching!
Thanks so much for pointing this out, as I hadn't even noticed! I've addressed your observation in my newest video here: th-cam.com/video/CBOWZ_ATtCw/w-d-xo.html Thank you 🙏
Great instructional video, much appreciate it. You mentioned that when collecting from dirtier water it is advised to backwash every 10 gallons, could some of the water previously filtered be used for this? I’m thinking in a long term camping or emergency such like a hurricane where here in south Florida we don’t have true rivers but more like canals. Thank you again for taking the time to share and produce your content.
Hi Jorge, thanks for your comment. Yes, you could definitely use the water you've already filtered to backflush your filter. The idea is just to make sure it's as clean as possible. I think I also read somewhere that lukewarm water can help to break up stubborn muck which has become wedged in the pores of your filter too 🤔
I just bought the sawyer mini and it to can attach to a water bottle. I would be a little concerned about the water leaking down the side of the filter getting dirty water mixed with the clean water. Don't think it should leak that bad. Good review, thanks.
I'm glad you found the review helpful! I know the mini also has a 28mm thread which allows it to be attached to a standard drinking bottle, but I feel like it's not as well set up for this as the squeeze. I have also had some leakage issues with my squeeze when attaching it to both the pouch and a bottle... although I'm pretty sure this is user error, rather than an issue with the product itself! Thanks for your comment!
I always wipe the outside of my dirty water bag off with a handkerchief or bandana before I filter water into my canteen. That way I don't cross contaminate my filtered water.
6:43 I would have put the empty bottle ontop then turned the whole thing upside down. Hows ur anxiety this week given our lockdown situation? Stay positive and keep thinking positive and hopefully tilly is getting those Owesome Taupo walks :)
Hiya Carlos! Yeah there's a whole bunch of ways to use this filter and this is another good suggestion that I've seen often on the trail. We're all managing to keep sane and mostly jovial here in Taupō, hope you are weathering the lockdown well 👍😀
Good informative video. How often have you filtered water on the Te Araroa Trail? I imagine I would only filter when near civilization or when the water source has passed through farmland.
I filtered ALL THE TIME. Ok, it probably wasn't necessary every single time, but for much of the trail it DOES pass through farmland, and you just don't know what might be a little further upstream. Streams that run directly from national park, i.e. the Waione Stream or Whakapapa Stream in Tongariro National Park are fast-flowing enough and probably clean enough to drink without filtering, but these streams also originate in a volcanic environment so I'd only drink without filtering if far enough downstream. That also includes filtering the water at HUTS, even if I was boiling it too. Because there's some nasty stuff that comes off hut roofs into rainwater tanks! I think you can't be too careful in the backcountry... it just depends how much you're willing to let the risk of Giardia or other bacteria disrupt your adventure. There were plenty of hikers I heard of that got sick whilst on trail. I can't confirm if all were from compromised water sources, but worth considering.
Great feedback Chris. I personally never used the collection pouches to store water, as on Te Araroa's North Island there are very few long dry stretches, but I have also heard this can be a problem with the Sawyer pouches. I exclusively used them for collecting and then filtering the water only.
Thank you for making these videos. They some really good tips about gear in NZ conditions, and the wonderful outdoors. A question, I have been weighing up different water filter options, and wondered where you got your sawyer squeeze from? Is there a NZ stockist, or would I need to ship one in from overseas?
I actually picked mine up on a trip to America in 2017, but there are plenty of retailers in NZ that now stock them, such as Bivouac, Torpedo 7 and Further Faster, and online stockists as well (e.g. Gearshop, Equip Outdoors).
This is a great question! I personally never bothered about cleaning the pouch (outside of rinsing it out when I got into towns) because I was always only using it as a 'dirty water' reservoir. My suggestion would be to squeeze a little dish soap in there, fill with warm water, shake around for a little while and then rinse out thoroughly.
Yep... not sure what I was saying here! And it was too long ago that I made this video to remember the research behind it. I do remember doing a lot of research beforehand about this, and at the time remember thinking that was very strange. Either the information was wrong on the sawyer website at the time (the Mini was new at that stage) or else I completely misread it. This is, of course, not the case: The Squeeze has a much faster flow rate than the Mini. I've updated the video description :)
Mine arrived without the white push pull cap.. The tapered nozzles don't fit proper into anything and also the syringe i see is threaded on the inside but does not hold, I;m sticking with my MSR. That's a shame you had that experience Bob, but great that you enjoy your MSR. This year I've been using the Katadyn BeFree filter, and am very impressed with it to date!
@@LongWhiteGypsy I have the katadyn with the pump handle like my MSR. I had issues with that LIFE STRAW and they do respond fast but told me to fiil it half way with water then add coconut oil. HERE IS THEIR LETTER Hey Bob, I am sorry that your Personal Straw wasn't able to pull water up as easily! It could be that it has a clog. We have found that air pressure can become trapped in our membrane microfilter and cause premature clogging. However, we do have a trick for this: a solution of canned coconut milk and water. I have the instructions here. The fat content of the coconut milk allows it to break up the air pressure and generally restore the hydrophilic nature of the membrane. Please let me know if this helps! ----------------------------------- Kaylan LifeStraw Happiness Manager
I know what you mean about your MSR. I have the MSR Miniworks with the blue top, if that's an indication of how long I've had it, and it's served me well. I recently went to the "dark side" for weight considerations and got the Sawyer Mini in the gravity feed configuration (with the 1gal bladder). Apparently there are two different Mini's. On mine, the "clean" side is threaded and the tapered nozzle is recessed. Sorry, there isn't a P/N on the filter but in this configuration, I can adapt it to almost anything. 3 years in and so far, so good. I will add that the frequency of back flushing mentioned here, in my experience, isn't realistic. I made it a habit to back flush after every use and I tend to be picky about where I get my water. So it is a bit finicky in that regard, or at least mine is, but every tool has its pro's and con's.
@@LongWhiteGypsy ThanK you, No matter what filter you use you should still add a few couple drops of bleach because no filter purifies except the MSR military grade and that goes for over 300.00. Whos going to live long enough to see if the filter last for 500,000 gallons?lol

I don’t trust the cap seal on the collection bags. Learned the hard way most of the caps leak. Not good for using as a carrying reservoir
