Actually the balls would have been legal in a match, in test cricket the leg side wide rule doesn't apply, and even in an ODI or T20 they still wouldn't have been wides, the ball needs to go behind the batsman to be a wide, once Piers stepped back, Lee would be allowed to follow him with the ball as long as it doesn't go behind his back. In other words, with regards to the leg side wide, once the ball hits the batsman or the batsman hits the ball, it can't be wide.
They wouldn't. Umpire would have asked him to stop or taken him out of bowling completely for unnecessary hostility. You are not allowed 6 bouncers an over, though they rarely exercise that rule, but in this case they would have.

Probably the 80s when there were less protections, the umpires didn't say a word when Johnson was keeping the ball at England tailenders' throats in that famous ashes series. Neil Wagner bowls like 80% of his balls short. If more than 2 balls are head height an over then it's wide but you're still allowed to keep it that height, it'd just be wide, plus if you keep it at throat height it won't be wide. The reason bowlers don't consistently bowl short is because it's more effective to mix it up with fuller bowls or on a good length, the short ball becomes a lot less effective when it's predictable, unless the batsman has an obvious weakness against the short ball, like Stuart Broad or Suresh Raina, most play it well now.

The point I was making was if the batsman is obviously trying to avoid playing the ball and almost running out of the pitch to avoid it and you still follow him and hit him on the body is blatant hostility. In which case the umpire would intervene. That doesn't mean what Johnson did was right, umpires should have stepped in and restricted him to two bouncers an over. Same goes to Wagner as well. Key difference is the reaction from batsman, are they trying to play and fight or are they obviously trying to protect themselves not bothering about their wicket.

In actual fact what I observed was Piers from a cricketers point was WEAK, he stepped away from every ball except the final ball which encouraged Lee to where he was going and on the last ball just bowled a medium pace ball on the stumps. Lee 160K/100MPH bowler, 80% still 130K/80MPH, still pretty slippery.

As an 11 year old, I faced the great Curtly Ambrose in the nets. It remains the single most terrifying experience of my life! Definitely one of the greatest test bowlers of all time. Hostile, but accurate. Courtney Walsh at the other end, for hours. Terrified batsmen, without helmets in the early part of his career, without a bad ball to hit.

Really enjoying you guys exploring cricket and learning how the game works. I recorded some audio for a podcast a few years ago where I took a American sports fan who knew nothing about cricket, teaching him the basics of the game to eventually be able to follow the T20 world cup. There's a part of me that would like it if you had an expert to guide you (could be me, could be 1 of over a billion Indians) but I do like how much you're learning without specific instruction and more so through curiosity! If I were to give some direction, look into bowling techniques especially the grips and releases as this is something that compares and contrasts well with baseball pitching!
As a Brit I love seeing the very outspoken Piers Morgan on wrong end of Brett Lee. Very amusing that the first thing he does is advance down the pitch and try to launch Lee out of the stadium. I hope he's wearing a box!
The bouncers would have been wide balls but Brett Lee wouldn’t have bowled them there if Piers Morgan hadn’t backed away to the leg side ... as a bowler, you see the batsman backing away, you bowl it at them to either hit them or cramp up any scoring opportunity through the off side field which is often why the batsman will back away to the leg side. Same thing if you see a batsman advancing down the wicket, you’ll drop it in short to knock their helmet off. It usually smartens them up, if they’re still conscious of course.
Around ten years ago I caught Piers Morgan at third slip off a seventy year old Jamaican swing bowler. His hissy fit trudging back to the Newick pavillion and the accompanying jeers and cheers was a sight to behold. Has to be said, at the end of the match he was a good sport and made me think his media pantomime villain persona is just an act.

One could argue that the 2nd ball (the bouncer) was a wide as it was quite far above the batsman’s head. I think it might be penalised as wide in limited overs matches (ODI and T20). However, to echo some of the comments below, wides are not really penalised in Test cricket (because of the unlimited overs) unless they’re so far out of the batsman’s reach or so far above his head that even the wicket keeper can’t reach it. No they were not wide ball . They were all legal.if the ball passes behind the batsman and the stumps both then its wide .if the batsman moves sideways then it's not wide ball bcoz the ball is in hitting area.
First 4 ball wasn't a wide ball because the batsman was moving actually breet Lee was satting him down nicely 1st four ball was short in length and the 5th one is right into the block hall and he cleaned him up with the Yorker

The bouncers would have been wide balls but Brett Lee wouldn’t have bowled them there if Piers Morgan hadn’t backed away to the leg side ... as a bowler, you see the batsman backing away, you bowl it at them to either hit them or cramp up any scoring opportunity through the off side field which is often why the batsman will back away to the leg side. Same thing if you see a batsman advancing down the wicket, you’ll drop it in short to knock their helmet off. It usually smartens them up, if they’re still conscious of course.

One could argue that the 2nd ball (the bouncer) was a wide as it was quite far above the batsman’s head. I think it might be penalised as wide in limited overs matches (ODI and T20). However, to echo some of the comments below, wides are not really penalised in Test cricket (because of the unlimited overs) unless they’re so far out of the batsman’s reach or so far above his head that even the wicket keeper can’t reach it.

No they were not wide ball .
They were all legal.if the ball passes behind the batsman and the stumps both then its wide .if the batsman moves sideways then it's not wide ball bcoz the ball is in hitting area.
First 4 ball wasn't a wide ball because the batsman was moving actually breet Lee was satting him down nicely 1st four ball was short in length and the 5th one is right into the block hall and he cleaned him up with the Yorker
