I came back to this and realized the reason we see Hannibal seeming so sweet in this scene is because it’s through Will’s eyes. When he’s drowsy and Hannibal bends down to say “give that a moment” he’s looking into Will’s eyes, and Will is looking at him. I believe in that moment he saw the true love on Hannibal’s face in some way.
I love how Will leans into Hannibal and Hannibal has that moment of “finally….oh shit, nope, he’s not meaning it like that”. The way he’s so precisely removing Will’s shirt and trying to not LOOK at Will is so sweet. I’ve certainly done that with people I’ve fancied, if I’ve been in an intimate setting with them I’ve panicked in case I’ve looked too long or touched a smidge too often, you don’t want that person to think you’ve engineered the environment and for them to feel as though you’re taking advantage of the situation. Hannibal can’t keep his hands off Will when he’s clothed but this is different, Will needs his help. Whatever else Hannibal is, he’s not a handsy sexual predator. He’s a predator but even he has standards and lines and boundaries. Fascinating portrayal by Mads and Hugh. When Will leans into him - Will “I don’t like being touched or looking at people” Graham - I think he’s needing that support that only Hannibal can give him. Physical, mental, emotional. This is one of the most abusive relationships ever portrayed and shows just how complex Love is, it shows why abused partners can’t just get up and walk away, there’s too much connection. Speaking from experience, you’re being controlled but it’s scary saying to that person “do you mind if I’d take away my being so you can’t control me” It takes a lot of strength and then YOU feel guilty and remorseful that you ended the relationship. Some of this is hard going for me to watch but also very cathartic. It’s a fascinating show. Very clever.
I also wanna mention the ‘no no no no no’ from Will when Hannibal was injecting him in this scene. He’s been drugged so many times 😢 he knows it’s bad news 😅

Will lost the urge to forgive/kill him in the moment, I’d suggest that the knife represents both violence because it is one of the most primitive weapons of destruction ( + the curvature and blade reminds me of the knife Hannibal used for intestine rearrangement... and the handle really looks like a kitchen knife) and love, since the last time we saw a smaller knife like this, Hannibal stabbed Will out of violent betrayal and as a physical retribution to both of them for allowing Hannibal to fall so deeply in love. So when Will drops it that symbolizes either 1) His warring morality and darker needs/impulses are simply too much for him to hold on too, or 2) Will, in this moment, does not want to kill Hannibal in a fit of vengeance after seeing him again, as it wouldn’t be the death Hannibal deserved or poetic enough for either of them. Hence why he let go of the knife. Neither of these two options mean that Will doesn’t want to *hurt* Hannibal (their characters thrive off of violence and desire), especially after everything that’s been done to him by Hannibal’s hand, but that he was most likely closer to giving up in the endless bloody struggle that made up the dichotomy of their relationship ever since Will was framed by Hannibal and put in the BSHCI (And, he does try to give up, by marrying Molly and trying to forget his old life). Hannibal catching Will’s knife/love/violence and carefully compartmentalizing it away for safekeeping reminds us that Hannibal wants to nurture passion in Will, whether it be for violence or for Hannibal (or both), any outcome would be remarkable for him to witness. It also acts as vague foreshadowing to his own years in the BSHCI waiting for Will to return to him and to bring his own knife as well, (waiting exactly where he knows it will be, the silverware drawer in the kitchen). From this perspective, it’s much easier to understand their once odd separation in the middle of season 3, and exactly *why* Will told Hannibal he ‘doesn’t want to see him anymore’. Because just the sight of Hannibal obliterated his motives in killing or harming him outside the Uffizi gallery. Will was incredibly vengeful for most of season two and season three, about 2 years in universe, and to have all that festered violence confused so thoroughly when the almost satisfactorily poetic opportunity presented itself, would have been incredibly alarming and confusing, suggesting a deeper connection than Will thought he could never be a part of (‘I build forts’), or that Hannibal’s pathology would allow (he’s a goddamn serial killer who notoriously wears a ‘person suit’ you guys, I’d be doubtful if any feeling he showed was genuine too). Sorry for writing an essay...just wanted to share some of my thoughts on the matter and suggest a theory for why the scene/action holds so much weight 😊
btw in the script, the reason Will can't lift his arm is because of nerve damage that the bullet inflicted, so when Hannibal puts the knife in Will's hand to see if he would stab him, Will physically can't. i honestly think Hannibal knew this (having a medical background) and just did this to tease him.

The only problem I get as I watch these clips over and over again is that I tend to catch minor detail discrepancies that bother me later. Like, as an example, Hannibal has the syringe on his hand while injecting Will.. and a split second later he has both hands free to catch the knife. I know there could be a jump in time there for dramatic effect.. but in the back of my mind still lingers the thought that it's just clunky editing.
Soo the way I see it Hannibal gives Will the knife to test if Will would stab him... and then, when Will doesn't, Hanni metaphorically stabs his back instead (druggs him and cuts into his forehead)? Also, is the "Excallent!" for Chioh finally killing the man or for realising that Will is closer to becoming what Hanni wants him to become, by manipulating her into committing a murder? Actually, Will was going to stab Hannibal with that knife and Chiyoh shot him before he could hurt Hannibal. So him giving the knife back and saying "you dropped your forgiveness", is him being cheeky about Will telling him before that he forgives him, before he later tried to betray Hannibal again anyways. I think the "excellent" refers to Chiyoh killing her charge. Since Hannibal left the man's life up to her to begin with(since she stopped Hannibal from killing the man), he wanted to see if she would kill him herself after knowing what he had done and why Hannibal had wanted to kill him. So he is pleased to know that his experiment drew out a favorable result. He usually seems to be pleased when another gains the capacity to kill or when things go a way he expected/hoped for.

The only problem I get as I watch these clips over and over again is that I tend to catch minor detail discrepancies that bother me later. Like, as an example, Hannibal has the syringe on his hand while injecting Will.. and a split second later he has both hands free to catch the knife. I know there could be a jump in time there for dramatic effect.. but in the back of my mind still lingers the thought that it's just clunky editing.

The way I saw it, Will was trying to stab Hannibal but couldn't lift his arm. I feel like Hannibal was teasing him.
Actually, Will was going to stab Hannibal with that knife and Chiyoh shot him before he could hurt Hannibal. So him giving the knife back and saying "you dropped your forgiveness", is him being cheeky about Will telling him before that he forgives him, before he later tried to betray Hannibal again anyways.
I think the "excellent" refers to Chiyoh killing her charge. Since Hannibal left the man's life up to her to begin with(since she stopped Hannibal from killing the man), he wanted to see if she would kill him herself after knowing what he had done and why Hannibal had wanted to kill him. So he is pleased to know that his experiment drew out a favorable result. He usually seems to be pleased when another gains the capacity to kill or when things go a way he expected/hoped for.
I think he was letting Will know he noticed the knife Will intended to stab him with.
