  • This is our plan to level up on mountain homestead survival, a geothermal greenhouse using GAHT technology (ground to air heat transfer) to unlock food security at high elevations and cold climates. See our plan and join our tour of a local tropical year round greenhouse using this technology. It's all made possible by the geodesic dome greenhouse kit from Growing Spaces company in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

    This video is a solid gold find for preppers and homesteaders! Using a geothermal greenhouse with GAHT technology is a smart move for growing food all year, even in cold places. It's energy-efficient and makes the most of the earth's stable temperatures to keep the greenhouse warm without extra heating. The geodesic dome design is also cool because it's sturdy and good at catching sunlight, which helps plants grow better. Seeing this tech in action at a local tropical greenhouse is a great way to learn and get inspired. It's all about being more self-reliant and ready for anything, which is exactly what prepping is about.

      Well said!!! We are so excited to begin this project and show others how to maximize self sufficiency (in any location) as well as expand on our livable space, creating a personal oasis!

      I just saw a video we made 4 years ago that said we were interested in this dome greenhouse and I honestly thought it was years away financially. So it definitely happened sooner than later!

      Most GAHT systems are poorly designed and dont perform as well as they should. The temperature of the ground is not stable when you are actively adding or removing heat, it finds a new balance point. If you install temperature senors inside and outside the greenhouse at the same depth you can see it happening in real time. A 33ft dome with a 2ft pony wall will require at least 1077ft of 4" tubing. The tubing layout will need to be designed to handle at least 1370cfm of airflow at no more than 0.2-0.3 SP which is enough for heating. For effective cooling (aka heat storage) you`ll need 2,750 cfm as a minimum. This will be enough to put the entire dome air volume underground 20x per hour. I designed mine, also in a dome greenhouse, for 60x an hour and use a fan speed controller to vary the flow rate. 20-25x is good for spring cooling performance when the mass is cooler, higher flow rate is needed in early autumn when thew mass is much warmer. Diminishing returns in terms of heat moved vs power consumed begin at about 45x. I ran it at 60x combined with overhead misting ( increased RH% boosts cooling perfomance) during a 40+C heatwave, my neighbours lost everything as their greenhouses turned into ovens.

    We bought a used Growing Space dome in Salida about this time last year. First summers tomatoes, herbs,cucumbers etc did awesome, so much we gave at least 75 % away. Ours is 15 ft.and is plenty big with raised beds, ground circulation tubes, 700 gallon water tank with two Koi fish. We have peas, beets and lettuce to be harvested now. Tomatoes (volunteers are growing already) cucumbers and fig tree will go in next. We also have a 12x 14 beautiful stone greenhouse and a couple of outside raised bed. Greetings from Buena Vista Colorado at 8500 ft. You will love yours too!

    Wow, he was very knowledgeable in old school stuff with a mix of technology and definitely some very clear water in his pond. Nothing like having your own fresh fish and veggies for dinner.

      What I think is neat for us living up here is that we can use it as a place to hang out and be around greenery in the middle of winter. When we get our set up you should come see it. I think I'll be part of the Gilpin Art Studio Tour in September, the greenhouse will be part of that open house. I hope we have plants in by then!

    Nice tour. This will help you figure out your plan. Part of that will be, I'm sure, a backup energy system to keep all the electrical equipment operating in the event of a long-term power failure. It seems simple, but actually has a lot of moving parts. This should give you great content for us subscribers to watch. Exciting time ahead guys.

      That's the plan! We are considering a lot of solar and battery options for this. We may not be tropical right away, but certainly year round for zone 5-6 plants .

    Loved the tour. The gentleman was certainly generous with his knowledge. I have been dreaming of doing permaculture and never imagined using a dome set up❤ until you brought it up. I guess if I did one it would be more like an earth ship style.

    👍 That dome looked tiny until you got in there. Nice plants, too crowded, agree. If you guys plan on having fish in your climate, you better budget a big battery bank backup plan for that temp control. Automatic propane generator with decent size tank? Even the water temp. for the plants needs to be regulated along with the ph levels, it's a job. Definitely gonna' be a nice retreat and worth it though.

    • @ColoradoMountainLiving
      @ColoradoMountainLiving  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its looks are deceiving right? We are going through our power options now. We may start with goldfish and graduate to tilapia as we get more familiar with temp control. Tilapia need 70 degree water .

      Is already rated for 60lb snow load and we are having the engineer make any adjustments to meet our county requirements 75 pounds . We should be good. A dome is naturally the strongest shape.

    • @ColoradoMountainLiving

      Yes! They are rated for 70lb snow loads but we sent our county permit requirements to the engineer for any needed adjustments.
