    Just FYI to anyone who might be considering buying those - little paper with Russian text is a quality control slip. Means the box has been checked and passed and if you find an issue to report to the hotline number. The white stuff on top of the paint is not mould, it’s a sort of release powder to ensure paint does not stick to the wrapper too much. It washes off in no time and does not mean there’s anything wrong with the paint.

    Just a small note: "Nevskaya Palitra" is the company name, White Nights or St Petersburg are their artist quality paints. They also have student grade paints called Sonnet and some called Ladoga, as well as gouache, acrylic and others.

      @@CeiTreiGameri My understanding is that the Sonnet brand is the student grade paint. Even students can have studios. : )

      @@CeiTreiGameri Сонет is considered the student grade. In my country it's basically a necessity in Art Highschools and generally in schools with art profile after 5th grade.

    I got the 16 pan pack for birthday in autumn and I haven't really looked into the reviews. I decided to today and I didn't understand some of the words in other reviews so this review was very helpful. I didn't realize how high quality they actually are. I am really thankful for my mom who got these for me along with Faber-Castell line art markers and 36 Faber-Castell pencil set.

    I can't wait to get them from my family in Russia! Nice illustration. This watercolors are professional grade, the reason it is cheaper because the cost to make them in Russia is lower then in USA or Europe. The salary is 250$ a month compair to 1600$ in USA.

    A beautiful illustration! White Nights are my favorite. If you can get your hands on it, try their Indian Yellow. It's a gorgeous, bright, transparent yellow that makes some great mixes. Some of my pans had the white on them, too, but it looked more like a powder, so I think they dust them so they don't stick to the wrapper. (Just a guess.) I just wipe it with a wet brush and have never had them grow mold. They're such low pressure paints. I don't feel guilty testing out mixes, and I love how quickly they rewet. Thanks for a fun video!

    • @Jannplansthings
      @Jannplansthings  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the lovely comment! I had the white powder on some pans but I definitely had mould on the blue, but I think I killed it with a bit of alcohol, so no worries! The white nights are such a fun single-pigment range of paint! I'm pleasantly pleased with them, and you're right, they are guilt-free due the generous amount you get! Thank you for watching my video

    I found deciphering the labels a most interesting adventure.
    St Petersburg Watercolours is the company.
    White Nights is the pro line of paints (Sonnet is the student grade). I think their marketing is bending toward using White Night as their recognizable name. White nights, by the way, is the shortest night in the summer, and is celebrated in SP by raising all the lift bridges.
    Nevskaya Palitra is the name of the palette (Neva is the river on which St Petersburg is built (hence the illustration), and palitra (палитря) just means palette). Their website says, "Made at the famous "Nevskaya Palitra" factory in St. Petersburg."
    Белые ночи (belie noch) means white nights.
    I'm right there with you unwrapping the eye-candies! Yum!

    The 10ml tube are available open stock, here in the UK from Ken Bromley and in sets from Jacksons. Ken Bromley are selling them for just £2.49 or £3.49 for the Cobalts and Cerulean which is really great value. I've not tried them yet but a lot of art teachers here are now recommending them to students over Cotman for quality and value.

    You can buy the tubes from either Jacksons art supplies and Ken Bromley art supplies - both from the UK - where I buy 95% of my art supplies. As you know EVERYTHING art supplies in Australia is sooooooo expensive & I wouldnt be able to afford to buy paint (watercolours) or brushes if I had to buy them in Australia. Russian watercolour masters ALL use White Nights watercolours. They are a bargain & I love them. Please tell me where you bought the Nevskaya Palitra kolinsky brushes, thank you.

    As you were talking about them using honey in the paints, just then your cat photobombed the screen. And all I could think of was that cat hair sticking to the paint pans because they don't dry 100% and end up slightly tacky. I have that issue with mine. Art work dries fine, but the pans are never fully dry for me.

    great job.
    LOVE the cat interruption, that means you have been ignoring her..
    I am newbie.
    you used glazing method and just layer upon layer?
    BUT there is no hard lines between layers.??
    you didn't use any wet on wet , did you?
    thanks for your info,

    • @Jannplansthings
      @Jannplansthings  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you John! I do just layer upon layer :). I find the hard lines aren't that prevalent in the build up, probably because this pigment is quite smooth and doesn't push to the edges. When there are hard lines, I tend to incorporate that into the overall painting style, or hide it under linework :)

    Thank you for the video. I am currently contemplating a set of White Nights tube paints (yes, they came out since this video).
    May I ask: What is the cultural difference between the watercolor culture and the alcohol ink culture. I have observed that the alcohol ink has a much deeper and brighter color than watercolor. I say this because watercolor professionals are always talking about "layering," which to my mind means that they are attempting to gain a deeper color to their work. Am I wrong? Are there watercolorists moving into the alcohol ink area for the deeper colors? Tia. Great work & info

    • @labaccident2010
      @labaccident2010 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get deeper colors by mixing in watercolors, but watercolors are generally meant for glazing (layering). That’s just how they work. Different materials work differently and sometimes require different techniques.

    Have you ever heard of ShinHan watercolors? Their student grade line only cost $25-$30 USD for 30 tubes and the quality is very impressive for what it is. I’d really love to hear your opinion on them in a future review video. :)
