  • HELSINKI FINLAND travel vlog: Exploring the tourist attractions and best places in the city including a city walk around Helsinki Senate Square & the famous Sea Pool.

    On my one and only day in Helsinki I joined a free city tour which guided me to many of Helsinki’s important landmarks and places. It was good to take a leisurely walk around the city and learn about its history.
    On the tour we visited Senate Square, the Helsinki Cathedral, the island of Katajanokka and the red brick Uspenski Cathedral from where I got some good views across the capital.
    On the far side of Katajanokka is a fleet of enormous icebreakers lined up in preparation for winter. When the Baltic Sea freezes it can cause issues for ferries and ships in the region so icebreakers are deployed to keep maritime traffic moving throughout the coldest months. It was pretty awesome to see them so close up.
    Later we stopped off at a small market on the waterfront where I flew my drone over the harbour area and ate some lunch. The little market square on the water’s edge is a great place to see the Skywheel Helsinki and Allas Sea Pool - in fact there’s a viewing platform nearby that offers eye-catching views over both - more details in the vlog.
    After a few showers I walked over to Railway Square (Rautatientori) and then did a little exploring of my own in the dark. All in all an enjoyable one day stop in Helsinki.

    Fun video Matt, but the "bell tower" you pointed out was actually the National library. The real bell tower was one of the twin buildings you probably saw at each end of the upper plateu, close to the cathedral.

      Thanks for the information, Crispy. Yes a few people have mentioned that, I think I must have misheard or misunderstood the tour guide. Thanks for watching, hope the rest of it was correct. Interesting city that's for sure.

    I really like your transitions at the beginning, I picked up on those last episode too! Very interesting to hear about wanting the competition to Tallinn. Pre-Covid, I had expected (this summer) to do a trip through the Baltics and realised how easy it is to take a ferry over to Helsinki for a day so it makes sense. I expect that trip will be put on the backburner for a while until border crossings become a bit easier. I expect trips for the next couple of years will probably focus on just 1 country. I've heard about that sweet - well done you for persevering for a good few minutes! Despite you being quite far away, you captured the look of slight pain on that gentleman who was swimming in the sea water perfectly! The maps showing how every year the ice freezing is different was fascinating - I had no idea... yet it makes perfect sense! Thoroughly enjoyed this video, thank you for sharing! 🙏

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I tend not to include too many transitions these days but I like to throw a few in when they fit (or so I think). Shame you can't make it over to the Baltics at the moment, still, it will give you plenty of planning time. Probably sensible to minimise the border crossing as well like you say. It's sounding like lateral flow tests may replace PCR tests when returning to the UK soon, that's great news I'd say. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Yes that poor guy whoever he is, I did wonder if I should have included the clip but then I figured there's no shame to it - I probably wouldn't of got as far as he did! It kinda summed up my explanation perfectly I thought. Thanks for sticking with me, glad you enjoyed my day in Helsinki!

      Thanks for the info, I just looked into it. Perhaps I got the date from when the UK recognised an independent Finland which was 1919, however I can see that independence was declared on 6 December 1917 so thank you for pointing that out. 👍 Thanks for watching the video and I'm glad you enjoyed it - was a really interesting city!

      That's great, glad you've found some more videos of interest - I always hope there's something for everyone on my channel 😃. Enjoyed travelling in Finland, I was in Helsinki for a day and a half if memory serves me right. Hopefully the video will give you some ideas, the Cathedral, Senate Square and the market area close to the Allas Sea Pool were all worth a stop. Helsinki wasn't one of my favourite cities to be honest but if you're there long enough I would recommend a day trip to either Porvoo (closer) or Loviisa (further away) if you feel inclined. There's also the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress which is accessible by a 20 minute boat ride from the harbour in Helsinki. I hope you have a cool trip.

    Beautiful city, thanks for sharing. When baths were invented in Greece, they were basically pools. Each pool was a little warmer than the other. After you reached your last hot pool, you would jump into the cold 🥶 pool at the end. Research has shown its very good for you. You should try the cold water, it's a shock to the nervous system
