Most unfortunate bilingual name trajedy was a boy in my class. His parents were French and didn't speak any english. He was born in canada though so they wanted him to have an 'American' sounding name to help him fit in and given the popularity of harry potter, they named him Harry. What they failed to realize is that when your last name is Anas naming your child Harry is not a good plan to help him out socially. Harry Anas is quite a name to put on your resume

I once worked with a woman who explained how she named her daughter. She stated that while pregnant she asked her husband for name suggestions and before replying he happened to glance over at a bottle of cleaner. So, he blurted out the first thing that came to his mind - the name of the cleaner - Tidy - as in Tidy Bowl toilet cleaner. She actually liked the sound of it and thus named her daughter Tidy Lou. I almost asked her if she realized that she just basically named her daughter "clean toilet." lol

Can I just say isis (the goddess)
    1) is not a Greek goddess and is Egyptian
2)is the goddess of magic and healing not nature
Edit: I was not aware of this but Aset (the original Egyptian name) has nature as part of her associations. I was only aware of the magic and medicine associations. I love learning and mythology so this is showing how incompetent I can be which is called the duning Kruger effect but now I'm going on a tangent sorry. My point being: thank you everyone and I hope we can all keep learning about historical cultures happily by sharing our knowledge with everyone

The swastik is way older than Buddhism. It's an ancient Indian symbol, still very important to hindus. Often found at the doorways of homes, is in every temple, every home altar. The oldest known swastik dates to around 10,000 years ago from the Ukraine, and as indians, it is still important. So when you enter a Hindu home, don't get all offended and so on. And even if you didn't name her daughter isis before everything went down you got to be a little more careful with what you say because if you're not careful it could very easily be taken out of context and have some undesirable consequences.

No joke - I taught a child whose name was Cleotris. She went by Cleo, but I felt so sorry for her due to the horrible treatment she forced to endure throughout middle school. Why would a parent do that to a child?

To be fair, Isis is a pretty ancient name, going back to the Egyptian goddess. I would just assume that anyone who named their kid Isis did it because of tradition. That being said, sometimes you should hold off tradition until words get new meanings. Like anyone who decided to shorten "Richard" to "Dick"

Here in Brasil Isis is actually a pretty common name for young girls. I knew quite a few growing up. I'd never really made the correlation between Isis the name and ISIS the... well, ISIS before, probably because ISIS wasn't really a big deal here as far as I can tell.

Head over to the moguls. I'm trying to perfect my technique while keeping my knees in the same shape as they started and WWWWWEEEEEEE..... A waist high kid rips past me going right over the tips of my skis. No poles. Arms up, legs out like an X and they are just going from top to top of each mogul heading straight down at a speed just short of the sound barrier. WHAT THE? After extracting myself from the tree I flew into after they went by I started laughing. And start plotting..... I'll plant a pole next time and stop them and try to tell them how to properly go down. Next run 30 mins later I come off the slope and this kid skies up. Here's your pole sir. Sorry about running into it.. Didn't slow him down one bit.

When I was 12 or so, my mom and stepdad were trying to teach me to snowboard on the bunny slope. I...did not take well to it. I've fallen over, my board is dragging me down the hill, and I'm trying to grab snow in a futile effort to stop myself. There happened to be a lady sitting on the run watching her small toddler zip around on his board like a pro, and unfortunately for her, she stopped me. With her tailbone.
Btw, turns out I'm a much better skier than I am a boarder. 🤣
