Trevor is a very realistic, albeit over the top, character when you consider his circumstances. His struggles are impossible to understand when you haven't been in the shoes of an addict (this has nothing to do with his drug use).
I do think it’s adorable that Michael genuinely does care about Trevor by the end of the game- he’s much more jovial with him and even asks if he’s okay. Big different from most of the story mode where the friendship was very one sided

What point(s) in the game are the characters too busy to hang out? Is it like right before a Heist? Because even Lamar gets busy at some point apparently.
i think it works that if you have missions together available, or just hung out or just did a mission together. the heist set ups and finales are what differentiates the “aint we got work to do/we just spoke” dialogues from the regular rejections. hangouts are one of the main missable things in the game because for some of them you have to do missions in a certain order and/or stop after a certain one. there can be few opportunities to do them, but also they may need a certain mission to be completed to become available. i’ve experimented a lot with the hangouts lamar may be busy if “the long stretch” is available”? not sure when otherwise in the storyline
