I went this this church as a little girl and learned all I know about harmony and how the spirit of God inside us is stirred by singing hymns together as a congregation that loves each other and loves God. I have so very many wonderful memories of going to church there. I go to church with my Dad now who lead singing at Bearwallow when I was a little girl and also taught me how to sing. Please post more songs y'all. I'm always googling a Capella music on you tube and there's not enough of it and too much of the bad stuff. This is exactly what this world needs more of. Love y'all.

Singing in Church Style Which is - A Cappella Singing
    Something to think about:
Our worship MUST be according to Jesus' authority, other wise we are worshiping in vain. If a person believes in God and Jesus as the Son of God, then that person will see to it that they will worship in spirit and in truth, by worshiping according to the authority of Christ.
It is not difficult to apply this same principle to other areas of worship. When it comes to singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, the New Testament doesn't equivocate ( to be deliberately unclear). The passages that speak of music in the church are limited.
None mention instruments in the worship of the church. The positive command regarding music in the church is: "Sing!" No one denies this. All agree that singing occurred. So why conclude that singing only is God's desire? The scriptures are silent on the use of instruments in Christian worship of the church.
Is that silence permissive? Is that silence prohibitive? Can the scriptures answer these questions? Yes. The examples of Nadab and Abihu teach that God's silence is prohibitive (Leviticus 10:1-2). God's commands to Noah to build the ark teach that God's silence is prohibitive
For instance, Since God was clear and specific when He told Noah to build an ark out of gofer wood, that prohibited any other type of wood, or an additional type of wood to the gofer wood. Noah didn't say, well, God didn't say not to use red wood, or pine, so I will use it...If he did that, then he would have went against God's specific instructions and the ark wouldn't have floated.
Silence prohibited the church at Corinth from calling themselves Paulites (1 Corinthians 1:13). Silence prohibited Jesus from being a priest under the law of Moses. (Hebrews 7:14, says "For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Judah; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.") Silence prohibited the exaltation of angels to positions of divine authority (Hebrews 1:5, 13). In each of these examples God's positive commands limit what may be done.
When we consider that man is not authorized to do anything he wants to do in worship (John 4:24), that worship becomes meaningless when we elevate human tradition (i.e. the use of instruments) to doctrine in worship (Matthew 15:9), that we cannot approach God in worship with a display of our own righteousness (Romans 10:2-3), and the prohibitive nature of the silence of the scriptures, we conclude it is sinful to worship God with the instrument, because there is NO Specific instruction, command, authority for it.
Now in the Old Testament God was specific when he commanded singing AND playing. He specifically said to sing and play, and to play skillfully....BUT that was in the Old Testament..In the New Testament, the specific command is to Sing. If God had wanted us to use instruments as He did in the Old Testament, He would have been specific and clear about it, and said, to sing AND play. But there is not one passage in the New Testament where we are specifically commanded to sing AND play.
Ephesians 5:19 says....Speak to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. The writer Paul in this passage was talking about the heart as like a stringed instrument, BUT instead of plucking the strings of an instrument, we are plucking the strings of our hearts and singing with our voices and the fruit of our lips...And that is the message that Paul was teaching.
Remember what Colossians 3:17 says? And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Christians are to respect authority. We are first and foremost to respect the authority of our Lord who has been given all authority (Matthew 28:18) over all flesh (John 17:2). We respect Christ's authority by looking to His word for everything that we say and do in service to Him in His kingdom (Colossians 3:17).
Christians are to be affiliated with something, namely, Christ and His church. All those who are baptized into Christ are baptized into Christ's body (1 Corinthians 12:13), which is His church (Colossians 1:18). Christians belong to Christ and are members of his body, the church. Unfortunately, denominationalism has blurred many people's understanding regarding the one true church of Christ, and caused them to think that they need not be "affiliated" with any "church"/denomination. Truthfully, no Christian ought to be affiliated with a denomination, but all ought to be affiliated with Christ's church. To not be affiliated with the church of Christ is to abandon the head of the church himself, Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:22). It is to take oneself out from among the saved (Acts 2:47; Ephesians 5:23). It is to remove oneself from those who are called saints (1 Corinthians 1:2). Let's not be guilty of being a "loose cannon" by not being affiliated with the church of Christ (Matthew 16:18).
    And in Conclusion.....
Christians are not to be captured and used by the enemy. We have an enemy, no doubt! (Matthew 13:39) And we, as Christians, must take up the whole armor of God and fight! (Ephesians 6:11) Our enemy is not flesh and blood but that which exalts itself against the knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 10:3, 4). How tragic, then, should we be captured by our enemy and turned to fight God! Yet some have done this very thing. How? 1) By seeking worldliness. The friend of the world is the enemy of God (James 4:4). 2) By being apathetic toward God (Revelation 3:16). We're not supposed to be lukewarm as Christians. 3) By looking to satisfy self (Philippians 3:18). We're not of those whose god is their belly. Let's resolve not to be captured by the enemy, and never be a "loose cannon."
Being described as a "loose cannon" is not something of which I would be very proud, whether that was in respect to authority, affiliation, or being captured by the enemy. Each one of us has a responsibility to respect authority, maintain fellowship with God and each other, and fight against the enemy in our life, whereever that enemy may give battle. "Loose cannons" have no place within the ranks of Christ's army. Let us not so be.

+Suebee Honey Ephesians 5:19 actually mentions musical instruments. That is in the Greek. The word we translate as "Psalms". The Greek word means to sing accompanied by a stringed instrument. I think this is a big non issue, and a matter of preference, but used for divisiveness. In fact, I think it is a stretch, as Ephesians 5 is about Christian living. Then in in 5:19, Paul stops talking about Christian living, talks about corporate worship for one verse then goes back to discussing Christian living? Seems unlikely. You have to be very careful you are not adding to the gospel. The bible certainly mentions faith, repentance, confession, and baptism, and it seems if you are adding to that not using musical instruments, then you may well be adding to the Gospel, which Paul condemned in Galatians. This is similar to the Charismatic movement saying that if you are saved, you will speak in tongues. By the way, I attend the Church of Christ, and much prefer not using musical instruments, because I love the harmonies, but I would stop short of saying that those that use musical instruments are not in fellowship with us.
I also find it interesting, that there are those that seem not to be able to just enjoy the beautiful music on a lot of the acapella music on here, but rather feel the need to bring up the use of instruments in worship.
One last thing. It is really interesting how the term "loose cannon" came about. It is from the times when the sailing vessels had cannons in them secured by ropes. When a cannon broke loose of its restraints, it was a loose cannon, and could do a lot of damage, as nothing was securing it and it could injure or kill people around it.

+J Elizabeth Romero Hi there. Thank you for the comment. I appreciate the discourse.
In my opinion, it would not mean everyone has to use a stringed instrument, but that we have freedom to choose. Look at it this way. IF we interpret it as a command of how to speak to one another, then every time we speak to one another, we would have to use psalms(stringed instrument), hymns, and spiritual songs. Then we have to figure out things like, "I am typing something to Ms. Romero, would this constitute talking under the New Testament? If so, I need to use a stringed instrument, hymns, and spiritual songs." This is where legalism leads us. We can easily become ruled by fear or being judgmental. I think a better interpretation, and what Paul is really getting at, is that while you are in your Christian walk, do not neglect to edify each other with psalms, hymns, spiritual songs and praising GOD together.
You see, many people want to take this out of the context of the full sentence that starts in 5:18, which says, "Do not be drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another...." In other words, in your Christian walk, don't look for comfort/edification in alcohol, but find it in the SPIRIT with other Christians.
Thank you again for your response. I am pleased to meet you, and that you are a Christian sister. Have a great day!

@@jonathanbowen1999 Your interpretation of Ephesians 5:19 is the most absurd thing I have ever seen. If instruments are included in this verse, then based on it's sentence structure, no one can please God unless each person can play an instrument while they sing. The demand of this verse would require this simultaneous action if you are correct and the instrument is included. The closest thing to anything resembling the use of an instrument in this verse is the Greek word "psallo," which means "to pluck," and is only used here metaphorically, in that the instrument is specified, "psallo the heart," which of course that specific instrument so named is the human heart.
Also, if a psalm automatically must include an instrument, then only a Levitical priest may perform such a psalm. The only allowed use of instrumental music in the Jewish Temple worship was during the daily animal sacrifice, and only the male Levitical priests and no one else, were allowed to perform in these musical occasions (2 Chronicles 29:25-30). Once the sacrifice ended however, then these same Levitical priests were only allowed to sing (verse 30), which proves that a psalm did not automatically demand the use of an instrument. The Psalms by the way, were used for the musical performances in Temple worship.
Of course the Temple worship, with it's animal sacrifices were not carried over into Christianity (Hebrews 9:11-15; 10:1-10), and historically for approximately 1,000 years all of Christendom practiced acapella praise only in the churches. That's because in Christianity the "fruit of lips" are offered as a sacrifice of praise (Hebrews 13:15), and not the materialistic works of hands to a Spirit God (Acts 17:24-25; John 4:21-24). Maybe this is why Jesus Himself in the only occasion mentioned in scripture, participated in congregational acapella singing (Matthew 26:30; 14:26). Betcha you can't squeeze an instrument into those two passages.
It's all about being truly spiritual or carnal, and if one chooses the carnal route, then clearly they are more interested in their own self indulgent pleasure (which is idolatry if it is in substitution for God's requirements - one of the "big ten").

    • @jonathanbowen1999
      @jonathanbowen1999 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@larrymcclain8874 Hi Larry. Let make answer to this. If my interpretation of Ephesians 5:19 being about Christian living and not corporate worship is the most absurd thing you have ever heard, my initial thought is that you are very sheltered. :-D I will take that as hyperbole, though, as I think that is how it is intended. (It is difficult to detect nuances of language in text sometimes.) What breaks my heart about this is that most others look at us in the Church of Christ as, "Those people that don't use musical instruments." Not, "Those people that are a powerful force for Christ and showing his love in both the community and the world." There is no real point in arguing with you, to my mind, as the thing is if you ever convinced me of your lexical argument in Greek, I would probably throw out Christianity altogether, as I would realize that there is no way to actually understand the Greek by what tools like Berry's says and so forth. I don't think that people that argue from this standpoint actually realize the end of what happens if their argument on the Greek prevails. Once we have no faith in determining what the Greek actually means with the tools available to us, what is our basis for figuring out the word of GOD? II Tim 2:15. I also found it a little humorous that you said, "Bet you can't squeeze an instrument into those two passages." It is humorous to me, a little, because I am not trying to squeeze anything anywhere. I actually could not care less about musical instruments as it seems that GOD does not care about them in scripture. If GOD cared about them, he would have dictated not to use them, as he did for lying and adultery, NOT hidden it in a lexical argument based on Greek that few can actually read. Hidden it in the scripture that is about Christian living. To what purpose? To trick billions of people? Let me leave you with this, which is the antithesis of what you said: Rev. 5:8 Bet you CAN squeeze an argument that harps are not authorized for worship into that passage.

What are the title of these songs? So we can look them up in a Hymnal.

Apparently they objected on principle instead of beauty. How could anyone listen and not moved by the words and the feelings such beautiful singing evokes?
