Jan Křtitel Václav Kalivoda (Johann Baptist Wenzel Kalliwoda) (1801-1866) was a Bohemian Composer and Violinist. Kalivoda started as early as 1811 studying violin and composition at the Prague Conservatory. He made his debut as a violinist at the age of 14. Upon completion of his studies he became a member of the Prague Opera Orchestra.
Kalivoda was a highly prolific composer, and was held in high regard during his lifetime by such eminent contemporaries as Robert Schumann. In all, his works number in the hundreds, of which there are about 250 works or sets of works with opus numbers.
His compositions included operas, symphonies, concert overtures-one of them, commissioned for the occasion, was used to close the first concert, in 1842, of the New York Philharmonic, as well as music for piano, piano concertos, concertinos for violin and for oboe, music for the church, lieder, choral music and various other vocal and instrumental works.

I don't know why but I find the start of the first theme in the sonata to be really touching

Wow, yet another interesting composer/performer I've never heard of.
I like it, but I'm not moved by it. Throughout the piece I had a feeling that showmanship was more important to the composer than expressive writing. Many of the figuration shapes just get overused, to the point where some parts sound more like an etude or even just a performer practicing.
This is something I've noticed before with certain prodigy turned composers who have become obscure since their lifetime.
They are interesting shapes and I might even download it just to use it as a practice challenge, but I doubt I would relisten to the piece and found myself fast forwarding through parts.

Steve R -- While restrained at times and not always riveting, I don't perceive those at detriments but rather found this to be a delightful meticulous sonata....So....BRAVO from San Agustinillo, Oaxaca !
