What's scary is 99% of the public would get referrals if they were to remodel their bathroom for $10K but for some damn reason indie filmmakers will just THROW good money at scammers like this without even checking into them. Maybe it's because by nature indie filmmakers have to wear so many hats (writer/director/editor and on) that they think they can automatically Produce do legal/contract work also. This is the deadly mistake, in most cases. Most are too emotional and close to your work and you want to sell it so bad that these con men (and women) can see you coming from a mile away. I've been doing this for 10+ years and have war stories like most. The last film I produced we secured a legit Sales Agent that presold $350K + in foreign and did NOT charge a dime upfront. They got 15% of every sale PLUS a stupid amount for "marketing" but you don't pre pay for this. PLEASE use an attorney in all dealings with the selling of your film and contracts don't rely on these online legal advice websites or your "gut" or else you're gonna be a one film wonder. Alex you are the man! for posting this Predatory Distribution info.
Why would anyone give a distributor the rights to their films for no money? You'd be better off just posting it on some streaming services and hope for the best.
I don't but the Protect Yourself from Predatory Film Distributors Facebook Group might have some info from the community. www.indiefilmhustle.com/protectyourself
Sounds evil....why do we need them. I'd be like here is $80K upfront and I put aside $10K for a hit man. If you don't return on investment you lose your legs. You get 1 year after that...and then ....hands. :P
