Undertaking a risk assessment with a young man with mental health problems & a learning disability

  • Tim has been admitted to a mental health ward after a deterioration in his mental state. His key worker from the learning disability service has been away. Watch the first part of the film as the psychiatric team fail to understand, and display unhelpful attitudes towards, Tim, with serious consequences. Also, look for the different ways in which their assumptions about Tim are often damaging.
    In the second part, they receive help and guidance as they assess Tim, helping them unravel the mystery of what happened to him and what is behind his distress.
    Look for the positive techniques used to talk with someone with a learning disability and how these are helpful to Tim.

    Very well portrayed. It is important to understand the baseline level of functioning for a person with a learning disability and/or autism -to distinguish what is pathological and what is normal or usual for the person. And it is essential to adapt both the environment and the communication. It seems that the man being assessed may still be trying to come to terms with the traumatic experience of witnessing his friend’s death and that his flooding his flat after the fire from the toaster was his attempt to keep safe. He is clearly distressed.
    Thank you to our NHS staff who make the effort to understand how to work with people with learning disabilities.
    And thank you to all the actors!

    I've dealt with learning difficulties and seen how other staff deal with it. The first case is the normal they charge in like bulls in a china shop instead of looking at the profile and getting specialist support and tools in. The bloke got sectioned for no good reason other then the fact he was strange. if they had the notes and awareness of the profile they may have found it was safeguarding issue as staff had not been able to support him leaving him in position where he could harm himself and his property.
