Same here. Garage ceiling tape had already been repaired once when I bought the house. It’s been getting worse and is now falling off the ceiling. It’s very humid here and my dryer vents to the garage too. The vent is near the door and I keep it open when the dryer is running but it’s still a problem.

Thank you so much for this video! I have been trying to find help on the internet for 3 years. I moved into an older home where the tape was failing throughout the house on the ceiling in the middle and the corners and no one was able to give me any information until I found this video. I had given up and was just going to try to glue it back but something told me look on TH-cam again. Your video is thorough and straight to the point and explains how to do it the right way and what will happen if you don't. While I'm in quarantine I have time to do this and as a DIYer now I know what to expect. Excellent video! Thank you!

You asked us to tell you who’s watching. Well, I’m a DIY’er who’s trying to fix some of the screw-ups from a pretty sad contractor. So far, I’ve been able to do a bunch of repairs that look professional, but it does take me a lot longer than it probably should. I just want my repairs, and anything I do in my home, to look like a pro did the job, and not just a wanna be pro!
Thankfully, there are instructional videos like yours to watch, so I can learn what to do correctly the FIRST time!
Thank you for all the tips, tricks, and welcomed advice! Can’t wait to try

I'm a DIY Jack-of-all-Trades and I'm having this tape problem in our garage, which is what led me to this video. I can do many things well but drywall is something that I've only dealt with a few times. Sometimes it was great and others, it looked like crap (to me. My wife didn't think so but she's too short to see the mistakes). The house was built in 1985 and I think that it, and every other house in the neighborhood, was done in way too much of a hurry. We don't have a pool but we do have high humidity often. Thanks for the video. I may now stand a chance of gettin' it done.

    Great video.
I have an interior ceiling with failing tape joints. Believe there was some water damage from the previous owner. I thought I would be able to just scrape the bubbling paint off and repaint easily and was confused about there being tape in the ceiling. Now it makes sense!
This is my first house and so I’m learning project by project how to fix it myself. Videos like yours help make that possible.

Thanks for this great video on the topic. I am a DIY homeowner in NYC and do most of my own repairs and renovations. I have tape coming off a ceiling where it meets the wall in one upstairs bedroom. There are no leaks from the attic space. In repainting the bedroom, I noticed a number of screw pops on the walls, something I saw to a very significant extent (at least 25 screws) in the adjacent bedroom when I painted that a few years ago. In general, the drywall subcontractor did poor work on our house, so I would venture they simply did a poor job of preparing the wall-ceiling joint as well as a poor job mudding it. In any case, I just painted the walls in this bedroom with the peeling tape, but it looks like I need to repair that and repaint the ceiling too. I will be using your technique and materials to do the job.

You are awesome for making this video. I'm a d.i.y. fix it person. I remodel rentals so I have gotten my hands dirty doing just about everything except major plumbing and electrical. I've done enough to know that I don't even try to caim that I know anything about those two trades. Lol My dads home is 37 yrs old and half of the house is an add one. But it's actually a very nice place. Anyway, his ceiling and wall are pulling apart, I'm assuming from settling over the years the walls have cracks too. Doors are hard to close etc. Anyway, I've never repaired the tape before and wasn't sure how to start. Been putting this project off for some time now. I'll try to post pics. If I can figure it out. Anyway, because you made this video, I'm ready to start as soon as I get fiberglass mess tape. That totally made sense, when you said that. If I hadn't seen your video I would have just stuck with the regular tape.
Again, your video was very informative. What's all-around godsend finding this video.
    Thank you so much,
    Char.

I would think that in an application like that, where high humidity is involved, it would be better from the beginning not to use drywall but vinyl soffit material. It makes an attractive ceiling and once it's up, you're done forever. It could be installed right over the existing ceiling here, for example. This is not to negate the excellent repair that you effected, Paul !

Hello. I am DIY person. I have EXACTLY the problem you address in this video: failing tape joints on an outdoor ceiling. Plus the saggy or lose sections of drywall that need extra screws got reinforcement. Live in NE FL. And you are probably onto something here about the pool because we have a pool. It also looked like previous owners dealt with these kinds of issues before ... and paper taped. Thanks for all material suggestions. I did wonder if there was an exterior paint product that could resist the future moisture issue...in order to prevent this again? Hopefully tho...the products u suggest will hold tight for years to come😅.
    THANK YOU for this video!

This is just what I was looking for. I had a painting company install 1/2" sheetrock over my cracked plaster ceiling. They have no idea what they are doing, pasting new tape over bubbled tape, etc. They are coming back tomorrow to do "touch-up", and the painted ceiling has now developed a crack the entire length of one seam. I pressed on the ceiling, and it moves at the seam. Your video shows that all of it can be fixed, but they're going to have to do some tearing out first. Just hope they have someone at the company who knows how to fix it!

This video was super helpful! Thank you. I’m a DIYer with cracked tape all over the 2nd floor. After pulling all the tape away in one area, I discovered the issue was the original contractor installed all the drywall for the walls 1/4in lower than the ceiling and didn’t leave enough backing for ceiling drywall. So, the ceiling has a lot of flex. I’m really hoping I can add all the backing I need through the attic. 🤞🏽 Otherwise, I’m going to be making a LOT of holes!

I'm a silversmither occasionally doing DIY work around the house, but attemptimg to do ceilings for the first time. I'm going to fix the ceiling in a downstairs bedroom, a well as other areas in the house. The bedroom had water dammage from an upstairs bathroom leak a few years back, which was repaired. Other places in the house have cracking at the.seam, I think from earthquakes (in Southern California - feelingl about 3 a month, but know there are at least 25+ per month in our area).
One suggestion I have for you is to update your Amazon list. I would have bought most everything off your posted list if it hadn't taken so long to get them in.

DIYer, pulled a plaster ceiling down years ago and put up drywall (long story-I like plaster) Had a bathtub overflow, finally getting around to re-doing the joints after many months of a crappy job-me. Undoing the crappy job, I had way too much mud on the ceiling. So I am needing to scrape that off, affix the drywall to the joists. There is some space between which should not be there, I'm sure but not really wanting to remove it. Oh gosh, I think I will remove enough of a piece of the drywall to actually get a look. Either that or put mud along the seams before doing my tape, I may also need more screws, I'll try that first. Fun times. 64-year-old woman rehabbing my home during the lockdown. Learning a lot! doing a lot! still not fun

Hi Paul. I have the exact same problem in my garage where the attic that is not insulated and almost all of the tape joints have failed. Additionally, much of the taping mud has fallen off as well leaving about an 8" wide area, the length of the tape joint to be repaired. All of the houses on my street have the same issue in the garage areas, which appears to be a result of condensation caused by the temperature difference between the attic and garage interior.
Since I am a beginner drywall guy, I wanted to see if you think my plan to repair this problem is reasonable?
#1) I'll remove the loose material as you did in your video.
#2) Prefill the flat joints and butt joints with 20 minute mud.
#3) Bed and tape the joints with FibaFuse using 90 minute mud (I'm slow that's why I think 90 would be better for me).
#4) Finish top coat with general purpose mud, two coats if I needed to make is flat.
#5) Apply Zinsser Bullseye 123 primer (a recommendation by the Kilted Guy for another project I am working on) to the repair, overlapping the existing undamaged texture slightly.
#6) Blow orange peel texture over repair using general purpose mud, then paint.
Note; I was contemplating sealing the joints with Zinsser Bullseye 123 primer, prior to prefilling them, however I have never heard of anyone ever doing that?
    Thank you sir,

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Mark!💥👊🏻 This video has the same exact thing going on: th-cam.com/video/_SGhxCvNStA/w-d-xo.html Your plan sounds like a good plan.👍🏻 The only thing I did differently was use all purpose joint compound. Because all purpose has a lot more glue in it than hot mud. That means better adhesion in a situation like this. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend.😎 -Paul

Same exact problem on all four tape joints in my outside laundry room in Pensacola, FL

Paul, every joint/seam in the ceiling of my attached garage are popping. You can see the tape coming loose and of course the joint compound that is over the tape is falling off. I don't know if it's because the garage is unconditioned space and what kind of compound was used. The house was built in 2002. There is an access ladder in the ceiling and plywood flooring was put on top of the rafters in an area about 10' X 10'. That may be compounding the problem from people and or things being put up there. However having said that the ceiling to wall seams are also delaminating and there isn't any flooring over that area. Thoughts?

Thank you for this video. My Florida room ceiling has peeling tape. It was built in '56 but I'm not sure if it's original tape. I had the company who installed the roof come out and check for any leaks a few months ago because we noticed that it was VERY SLOWLY dripping when it rained.. We don't think it has leaked since then. What would cause concern to think that there is a bigger issue?

Same problem here in Louisiana. I get to redo my entire garage ceiling. Heat and humidity, I don't think your pool adds any extra to the humid air in general.

Love your video, it all makes sense now. My question is, if you apply fiberglass tape to wet Kilz, won't the tape bubble up when the Kilz Dries?

Hey Paul, when do you recommend using Fiber mesh tape vs fibafuse? What projects would you use one over the other? Do you recommend using setting joint compound (like 20min mud) for both tapes or just for fiber mesh tape on the first coat?Love your channel and making my way through all of your videos!
    More questions to come.
    Thank you
    Ben

I always use a drywall drill bit to keep from over sinking the drywall screws. I also prime the repair with 123 .

If needed would it last longer if that whole room was done with green board, or is there a possibility of the tape lifting on the green board as well. Thank you !!! Great Video !!!

The new drywall screws you added will rust too, won’t they? Would it make sense to use deck screws in this application?

Thank you for this video. I am trying to repair ceiling dry wall joints in a 1936 historical building (where I work). The joint compound is falling out on the ground. Do you think this method will work to fill interior dry wall joints? We are going to paint over it (hasn't been done) but there is at least a 1/4 inch space to fill right now. The mesh tape seems key. Thanks again.

Awesome videos. I am in the process of having to repir my sunroom ceiling where the seams are peeling. I have scraped off the loose area and peeled the tape loosw back to a good spot or should I go from wall to wall. It has a knockdown texture.
