      Kanye's take on himself making boneheadedly stupid self destructive choices is interesting

    • @joshraid1550

      @@ursidae97I interpret the part about how he has to burn or she’ll turn to stone but he won’t let her do it as an extension of him being self-destructive, how this woman will be destroyed if she stays with him and but he needs her to be there with him. Especially since the video is called “runaway”, is centered on a song about Kanye telling a woman to run away, and she ends up running away from him in the end.

      @@joshraid1550 Also think the bird is a commentary on Kim Kardashian, his new love at the time. Hence the bit at the dinner table where his friend tells him she's a bird (had a sex tape with Ray J) as if he didn't know that. Although she's not a direct allegory for her she's representative of his muse.

    When this video originally came out like 10 years ago, they were both still with Channel Awesome. Part of the whole TGWTG brand was to act overly angry about everything. Todd has gotten better over time for me, especially after he left Channel Awesome.

      It really does feel like they wanted everyone to be more or less "The Nostalgia Critic, but for (x)" and just insert whatever specialty niche thing they reviewed. It got tedious after a while, most of the comedy just came from being over the top and angry all the time. Made me burnt out on reviews as a whole for a long time because of how much negativity there was.
      Glad I found Todd long after departing with them, though.

Problem was a bunch of people labeled him genius for calling himself an asshole for 70 minutes cause he's really good at beats even when his content is shallow af and the rest of his career has been a weird sad spiral of watching him reach for some kind of meaning in being a dick.

    • @medes5597
      @medes5597 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Agreed. I think it's pretty obvious that Kanye was motivated by imagery first and story a distant second. You can definitely find some story and meaning by following the images which they didn't even try to do most the time. While not the best or most well put together film it is very difficult to argue that Kanye _doesn't_ have a fantastic eye for imagery. The boy in the red KKK uniform, the ballet scene, the dinner, the phoenix escaping, the long shot of a statue that they inexplicably don't include... Like it was frustrating because sure runaway doesn't make total sense, but I don't think it was ever supposed to.
      Like isn't the parade for MJ accompanied by KKK members supposed to show that MJ destroyed himself to be accepted by white audiences and yet they never actually fully accepted him or the rest of the black community? Hence why the KKK are there to be like "yeah, we loved MJ but that doesn't change anything" and the kid in the KKK uniform is to show the impact that has upon the black community internalising those attitudes of being secondary in the eyes of whites? It felt like they were willfully ignoring any points being made with the imagery to be all "lol ain't Kanye weird"

    Okey it pisses me off that people try to justify this crapfest by saying 'oh but it's an ART film, it doesn't have to have meaning or make sense! Yeah that's bullshit. Anyone can just paste a string of pretty images together, that doesn't make it good. In a good artfilm, the images enhance the mood or tell a story. Sure, the meaning can be unclear, up for debate or just weird, but it makes you feel something. Every image is part of a whole and does more than just "look cool". Compare this to Pink Floyd's "The Wall": That's trippy as fuck, has totally weird images and while in some parts it's hard to understand what that image means, you know the artists does, because there IS cohesion: There HAS to be a story or a theme, and a structure at the core, otherwise it just gets boring. Making pretty images is nice, but it's easy. Turning those images into a whole that - at it's core - still builds up to something makes it interesting and worth a watch. A story can be heavily loaded with visual symbolism, but without a solid heart & core, it's just... empty.

      what about pink floyd’s the wall? a movie music video that makes absolutely no sense but yet is regarded as one of the greatest music videos of all time. and there is a few hidden messages throughout all the symbolism and all the imagery, such as the way society refuses to accept what is different, racial oppression as well as racial repression, the struggle of being in the public eye. i would love to go in depth on it if you would like. this is one of the greatest music videos of all time, my third behind the wall and thriller

    • @highlandsofdukeFAKE
      @highlandsofdukeFAKE 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lucas Bell what’s pretentious about it? ye has always established himself as ignorant and has a lot of confidence and self pride, and why shouldn’t he? he’s proven himself again and again almost consistently. sure, maybe cruel summer wasn’t that good but the tracks with ye and chief keef were incredible.
      as an example, picasso wouldn’t be the big artist he is if he wasn’t known for being eccentric and unique and well, picasso. yes he created some of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century, but where would it stand if he were humble? the art is simultaneously vibrant and brutal at the same time, and his image compliments that.
      and i gotta go on a tangent to express this, even though ye is known for having various themes and motifs in music, if every single piece of artwork and expression was intended to have some kind of “deeper meaning,” then art as we know it would be incredibly boring. there would be no place for hype songs, no place for phone wallpapers of batman, no place for songs like rock with you or films like ratatouille. and they’re all beloved by people everywhere

Which is why it’s not logical if you don’t think about in terms of the album, like they do in the video by taking lyrics literally instead of thinking about how they fit into the narrative the album tries to create. Wether or not it foes that well is not for me to say, but it’s certainly a better framework to start off on.

    This video is just ridiculous. It honestly makes them look like two dudes who just can’t comprehend any art that’s more than surface level. I mean for christ sakes when RC says “don’t these things seem like they don’t go together?” during Runaway I was dumbfounded. You’re a journalist who has never heard of juxtaposition? No real discussion of any of the actual music throughout the video, and the dismissal of Runaway is just hilarious. It’s literally been cemented as one of the best songs of all time at this point, yet Todd says it’s not on the level of Bad Romance...I laugh. Even though he leaves out some incredible cuts like Power and Monster, the music that’s in the video should give you guys enough to talk about for the whole 20 minutes without ever needing to mention the video. Now I don’t even think that the video is some masterwork but I mean they just dismiss it entirely, and they even cut out some key information to make it fit their agenda. At the banquet, the man says “you should leave things like that at the zoo” which is what prompts Kanye to act as he does. I thin Todd and RC fundamentally misunderstand why we watch them. We don’t give a shit about your jokes. You guys aren’t that funny. We care about your opinions on and analysis of music. I said earlier that I consider you journalists and I mean it. You have an engaging style and a wealth of knowledge that allows you to speak in depth on songs, and you’re wasting it by just pulling surface level “haha isn’t it funny when music videos are WEIRD and ARTISTIC” observations. Seriously. You’ve both improved since this video but this is honestly a really pathetic attempt from the two of you. Thumbs down. Never become this again.

    • @neonradius
      @neonradius ปีที่แล้ว +1

      “Wow, I disagree with their interpretation and opinion of this video, therefore it’s objectively bad”. Like, yes I can understand that Kanye had a point to a lot of this. But I also understand why the poor execution (bad acting, bad set design, bad writing) ruins it for a lot of people. But god forbid people acknowledge that Kanye is so wrapped up in his own awesomeness that what could be a great message gets lost in horrible execution. I mean, read your own comment. You literally get mad at Todd for having an opinion about a song that’s “been cemented as one of the best songs ever”. God forbid someone doesn’t share you’re opinion. And not to mention I think that the attempted contrast between classical music and “I sent this chick a picture of my d*ck” is so laughable and comedic it loses the point it was going for. Which is the entire video- Kanye attempting to make an artistic point, but the entire video being so poorly directed (by an artistic egomaniac who refuses to listen to criticism and directed it himself despite having no experience) and poorly put together that whatever artistic integrity it had is lost.
      You’re criticizing them because they didn’t see that there was an artistic meaning below the surface, but the artistic meaning is so buried in bad decisions and confusing editing that I can’t blame them in the slightest. I’m a huge fan of the album, and I love pointlessly analyzing videos, and I reacted the same way they did. I’m so tired of people responding to any criticism of their favorite artists with “BUT YOU JUST DONT GET IT ITS ACTUALLY GENIUS”

    • @Leon-zu1wp

      @@neonradius I can understand not liking it but did you watch the video? Those two nitpick EVERY detail to the point where even things that are plainly obvious aren't noticed by them. In any case the video isn't even pretentious. It's just aesthetics with a thin metaphor, there's not a lot to get.

    Did we really need to put up with Kanye West?
    Because his mental difficulties could only defend him so much and his self awareness that he did horrible things doesn’t make them any better, so nearly a decade later and he’s still the exact same person, even if he came out with 5 mor MBDTFs, would it be worth putting up with his BS still?
