This was one of your best videos. One of the things I love about studying other languages is the insights it gives into how other cultures view the world. For example, in the west, we think of time as horizontal, with the left side being past and the right side being future. But, in Chinese, time is vertical where the past is up and the future is down.
Hi, thanks for watching. I don't have proof of Chinese way of seeing time vertically or horizontally. I just made it up thinking this would help memories 上下 as being used in time description, also because the look of characters, one pointing up and the other down... that's why I kept saying "imagine this imagine that".
@@ChinesewithJiayi It's how my teacher also taught me time a couple months back.
My Chinese Medicine teacher explained that in the morning, the sun comes above the horizon, and in the afternoon it goes down towards disappearing below the horizon. This way the time is vertical and Shàng-Xià makes perfect sense ❤
@@ginabosque thanks! That'll be perfect explanation for the before and after "noon" case. Visually I think more about the sun clock from ancient times, on which the time runs in circles, like today. Therefore I didn't want to bring the sun in this case, and for all the other examples I wanted to refer the meaning of 上下to a vertical sequence, both in time and space...sooooo interesting to exchange insights with you guys! Love it!

@@ChinesewithJiayi Yeah, i know them but these simple/common words are the real challenge in terms of pronunciation by natives of different regions. I mean as per my observation, complex/ high level words are usually stressed and one can grasp the meaning but these simple words are squeezed together so as to create a typical accent/dialect.
This observation applies to all the languages.
Hey! You are just full of insights! I start to feel the same: since single characters are very short in pronunciation, we kind of add other upfront or after, 桌子，椅子，大象，小猫小狗… I surprisingly found in German, -chen (and in Swiss German, -li) for small and young! In Urdu too?
@@ChinesewithJiayi Yeah, in Urdu there are a lot of such combinations. By the way, you know Swiss Deutsch too? That's cool. You learnt it specifically or just acquired it naturally living in Switzerland? I learnt Hochdeutsch and it is the best i speak and understand so far alongside Spanish.
I don't learn swiss German, I just watch the German channels (intensively during exam) but when I live here the language is somehow into my life too (e.g. restaurant names, advertising). Just curious, could you give a few examples of such fill-up words in Urdu?

I'm also very fascinated by the individual meanings of each syllable so I like when you sometimes explain, or use the expression in a sentence for context.
Hi, I guess you mean each character (not syllable) right?😉I love to explain every character, as long as I could find any connection or logic (sometimes I wonder if it's too boring for audience...). But yes I will try my best to! Maybe you can see from my other radical videos where I break down the character into several parts. For a similar reason now I break down the words and phrases into elementaries. Hope it helps!

This is a happy coincidence as I was wondering about the words , "上星期 Shàng xīngqí , last week ", as I just read this in my textbook .
In my mind , which thinks in English , I thought of up as being the next week , as opposed to being the last week .
It is interesting how we form ideas according to the language we have learnt .

An interesting way we say locations , as I live in the South of England we say "Go up to London ." Whereas people from the North of England say "Go down to London ." So we view North as being up and South as being down .
Good morning! I'm definitely with you about how language can shape our mind! 上天 means "go to heaven"😉 天 have several meanings, "day" and "sky" are the main ones. That's why I mentioned in the video that for "day", the 上下 format doesn't work but have to use other terms like 昨天，今天，明天... have a nice Sunday!
The 4 directions we actually say the same as you people there, 上北，下南, up north, down south, cause that's how it shows on a compass (visually)😁 we even say 左西，右东left west, right east

Never mind! I'm so honored that you took notes after the video! I don't have explanations for every character or word, cause it's a very old language, many meanings, logic and format evolved drastically during history. I just try to find correlations to whatever comes into my mind from whatever I know... hopefully it helps!

I have always been fascinated by this language and unlocking the secrets of the beautiful characters but it was not until many years later that I decided to learn about the system which is so different to our alphabetical writing methods .
I can quite understand what a monumental task it would be to learn the characters and structure and yet it seems to me to be like a magical journey of discovery and being able to just for a few moments walk with the ancient people who invented and refined this gift for future generations . Sorry I tend to ramble must be my age .☺

Hi, for temperature 温度 you can definitely say that cause it's a noun! Nice try! 👍发烧not, cause it's an action, you may understand it as "the body burns", which brings fever 🤒 therefore 上下来去 after a verb would be very very strange... however you made a good point, that some words looking like nouns are actually verbs or vice versa...this is a phenomenon I could think about clarifying in future episodes...
The lesson is very good, thank you, but the logic of showing phrases is a bit perverted and deceiving. On the bottom should be the beginning and then the middle and on the top the last 下. This is how our brains work (most of people feel it like this).

@@ChinesewithJiayi The logic. Morning is (should be) at the bottom of the screen, afternoon in the center, evening at the top. In the video it's vice versa. Morning should not be at the top.
I guess you were referring to the sunrise in morning and sunset in the afternoon? Anyway, this is a video where I experiment with the feature of characters (上 pointing upwards and 下 pointing upwards) to see if this helps people memorizing. Therefore every word with 上 is above 下words, which I clarified at the beginning, as every experiment could have failures as well as success...it depends on the audiences to interpret...
It is logical the way Jiayi is doing it. You have a line, 上 is above (you can see the little line above the big line), 下 is below (the little line is below the big line). Or maybe it's more logical for a Chinese person, it might be cultural.
Anyway, it's just another opinion ☺️
