these people are southerners and midwesterners at heart, this is exactly how we live in the midwest and from what i have seen in the south. only the east&west coastals live different and life passes them by with out ever knowing or embracing this style of life.

Your analogy with the two different types of bicycles was dope, it was deep too. When the little girl hugged you after your long bike ride and you said what you said about her, I broke down in tears. Crazy how bicycles have been a big part of so many people's lives around the world for a century. I haven't ridden a bike in over 20 years now but they were a huge part of my childhood in suburban California in the 80's. When we'd go to visit my grandparents as a child I wanted to go to work with my grandpa every day all day. He had a small bicycle shop In Sebastopol California. He taught me so much about life, economics, but mostly how to be a good, respectable man all while he repaired and sold bicycles.
Peter you are so real, so generous. It is a pleasure to watch your videos and your attitude to these people. I'm glad that you've chosen my country for your journey. Take care man.

Well, if you wanna get technical about it.. "fish out of the water" is when you take a fish physically out of the water - while "fish out of water" is when a fish doesn't have any more water to "breathe" or "consume" because it's all depleted. In this case I think it's the latter because he has no American creature comforts / things to rely on. IMO

Yeah, no place has it all. The US is great for some things and is bad for others. Same with Ukraine. In general... money and free will better in the US, deeper connections better in Ukraine.
Peter, this episode hit me right in the feels. I felt the same way after I left the little village of Kalynivka. We know what it's like to live as an American, and unfortunately so many of us (americans) take it for granted. Being in Ukraine changed my life, as I'm sure it changed yours. I'm glad I'm back in the states, but Kalynivka touched my heart, I decided I have to go back. I loved this adventure you took. I was so excited to see the next episode and believe me, I tried to wait patiently haha. I've never subscribed to anything on TH-cam, until I started watching your videos. Keep it up! Yeah, that's how it is buddy.. Was born in Ukraine, moved away with family as a child, I came back to Ukraine amid objections just as the maidan was raging. I just couldn't leave Ukraine. It's almost as if Ukraine is the solution to some things that Americans crave. Like Peter and you. All the while most Ukrainians just dream of America - it's almost like a strange myth they have no knowledge about. The way the family / news anchors talk about America confirms this. I can sense it. To them, it's a Us vs Them mentality. It's just a distant dream.
Vitaliy, Good points here. Yeah, no perfect place. Life and culture can be complex and so much of it depends upon someone's situation. But it's not black and white like you are saying here... like the news anchors say. There is something special in Ukraine that's not necessarily in America. America has something Ukraine doesn't have. I guess it just comes down to personal choice.
Peter. Maybe so, but it doesn't have to be so complex. Allow me to explain. In my opinion, the Environment Makes You! It influences your worldview. You can take a young 20-something or 30-something Ukrainian who left (I know such people) and absolutely nothing will bring them back to Ukraine. Then you have the Ukainians who left AND really want to return - but reason - the brain - is stopping them. They complain and reminisce about the good times, but they won't return either. Then you have the foreigners - the expats, english teachers, adventurists, IT nomads, etc - who are not Ukrainian and see everything through a different prism. I guess I fall in somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd group.. By the way I love your videos and you should do more. Ukraine needs people like you. I was thinking of doing something like that as well, but I just can't approach it from the angle you are doing it... Maybe from the business side of things. Like the "kukuruza mafia" :) I'd imagine there's so much the West doesn't know about how Ukraine functions and how and why the mafia system works.

В Осипенко имею дом, переехал сюда с семьёй из Мариуполя около года назад. Не из-за войны или финансовых затруднений. Просто захотелось быть ближе к природе, чтобы дети росли на свободе, а не в каменных джунглях, в плохой экологии. Это особенное село. Здесь близко Азовское море и большое озеро - Бердянское водохранилище, есть река - Берда. До ближайшего города курорта Бердянска всего 25 км. Это второе по величине село в Украине. Здесь имеется большая школа и детский сад. Здесь тяжело с работой, но если имеешь удалённую работу или бизнес по интернету, либо сдаешь свою другую недвижимость где-то в городе, то жить здесь хорошо. Зимой скучновато, но весной и летом очень приятно. Очень много полезных и экологически чистых продуктов - молока, мяса, яиц, овощей, фруктов можно вырастить самим или недорого купить у соседей. Но нужен автомобиль и хороший велосипед :) С современными технологиями провести в дом воду не проблема. У меня в доме имеется и газовое отопление, и горячая вода с санузлом, и свет конечно же. Что интересно, в Осипенко местные жители почти поголовно говорят на украинском языке. Ваша семья приехала из Донбасса, потому у них родной язык русский. Кстати, от Осипенко до Мариуполя не 160 км... немного меньше, но не буду уточнять сколько :)
@@PeterSantenello Да довольны :) Мне 46 лет и почти всю жизнь я и жена прожили в квартире, в городе, не только в Мариуполе, но в молодости в городах побольше. Учились в университетах, имеем высшее образование, небольшой вируальный бизнес. А сейчас пришли к пониманию, что в селе жить лучше, по крайней мере с семьёй и маленькими детьми, у меня их двое. Наверное это понимание приходит с возрастом :) Спасибо за ваши фильмы. Они очень глубокие. Вы понимаете, что не только комфорт делает человека счастливым (хотя минимальный набор бытовых удобств важен), но и простые человеческие отношения, природа, велосипед... (я тоже велосипедист со стажем)) Я рад, что открыл для себя ваше творчество и смог увидеть не только Осипенко и Мариуполь, но и всю Украину со стороны.
I got too sentimental a bit watching this especially when you talked about that old bike. My dad rides this bike for 20 years already almost each day 20 km and noone can persuade him to change it. Now I guess I am figuring out why. Thanx, and good luck , Pete
I keep on watching this episode over and over again. And with every view, I discover the feelings, the thoughts that I knew were always there, but I have forgotten about them. It's like this video of yours, Peter, works as a switch for eye-opening. I have lived nearly 10 years in Ukraine, and sadly, my life there ended because of the war. Being in a safe environment now, where life is much easier, I keep on forgetting how spoiled I have become. But, Australia will never have what Ukraine does and vice versa. We just need not forget to stop and smell the flowers. Thank you for taking that journey to Osypenko, and giving us all such a valuable lesson.

Despite this family is indeed not typical, even weird, the main point that you have shown is priceless. You show that life is in small things like fresh berries, blue skies, laughter of your children, people who you love are safe and healthy. When you live in a big city you sometimes forget about it. And you reminded me...It's really hard time now in Ukraine, but wee need to stay strong and do all the best to save our country. What you said at the end of your episode made me cry... I can tell you at first hand, yes... I miss that unity & simplicity of Ukraine. I live in PA right now, but planning to go back home=Ukraine! America give me a lot, but people in the USA have a different values and idea of family and friendship...

Osypenko has been under Russian occupation since the beginning of the war. In one of Santenello's replies to one of the comments here, he says that the family is safe as they moved to Western Ukraine.
Man, when you were comparing bikes and speaking about your experience around 10:00-11:00, you almost got me crying. I had very similar one - feeling difference between hard training with Strava on, in lycra, on carbon bike and riding trash bike through Ukrainian villages and fields in hot summer. Thank you for your honest and open minded view. It's just such a great soothing feeling and inner love awaking from watching your videos.
Man, hearing you talk about the simple life is awesome. But it seems like maybe you grew up in a big city or a liberal area? Because those simple lives exist in the USA as well. I grew up in the city, but with amazing family that took me to the countryside and the mountains regularly and had the same experiences as those kids. Glad you are finally living what you missed out on as a kid. Unfortunately a lot of people will never have this.

That special feeling that makes me miss my home is this deepness that u r talking about. I can’t find it anywhere. В Осипенко имею дом, переехал сюда с семьёй из Мариуполя около года назад. Не из-за войны или финансовых затруднений. Просто захотелось быть ближе к природе, чтобы дети росли на свободе, а не в каменных джунглях, в плохой экологии. Это особенное село. Здесь близко Азовское море и большое озеро - Бердянское водохранилище, есть река - Берда. До ближайшего города курорта Бердянска всего 25 км. Это второе по величине село в Украине. Здесь имеется большая школа и детский сад. Здесь тяжело с работой, но если имеешь удалённую работу или бизнес по интернету, либо сдаешь свою другую недвижимость где-то в городе, то жить здесь хорошо. Зимой скучновато, но весной и летом очень приятно. Очень много полезных и экологически чистых продуктов - молока, мяса, яиц, овощей, фруктов можно вырастить самим или недорого купить у соседей. Но нужен автомобиль и хороший велосипед :) С современными технологиями провести в дом воду не проблема. У меня в доме имеется и газовое отопление, и горячая вода с санузлом, и свет конечно же. Что интересно, в Осипенко местные жители почти поголовно говорят на украинском языке. Ваша семья приехала из Донбасса, потому у них родной язык русский. Кстати, от Осипенко до Мариуполя не 160 км... немного меньше, но не буду уточнять сколько :)

@@PeterSantenello Да довольны :) Мне 46 лет и почти всю жизнь я и жена прожили в квартире, в городе, не только в Мариуполе, но в молодости в городах побольше. Учились в университетах, имеем высшее образование, небольшой вируальный бизнес. А сейчас пришли к пониманию, что в селе жить лучше, по крайней мере с семьёй и маленькими детьми, у меня их двое. Наверное это понимание приходит с возрастом :)
Спасибо за ваши фильмы. Они очень глубокие. Вы понимаете, что не только комфорт делает человека счастливым (хотя минимальный набор бытовых удобств важен), но и простые человеческие отношения, природа, велосипед... (я тоже велосипедист со стажем))
Я рад, что открыл для себя ваше творчество и смог увидеть не только Осипенко и Мариуполь, но и всю Украину со стороны.

I got too sentimental a bit watching this especially when you talked about that old bike. My dad rides this bike for 20 years already almost each day 20 km and noone can persuade him to change it. Now I guess I am figuring out why. Thanx, and good luck , Pete

I keep on watching this episode over and over again. And with every view, I discover the feelings, the thoughts that I knew were always there, but I have forgotten about them.
It's like this video of yours, Peter, works as a switch for eye-opening.
I have lived nearly 10 years in Ukraine, and sadly, my life there ended because of the war. Being in a safe environment now, where life is much easier, I keep on forgetting how spoiled I have become. But, Australia will never have what Ukraine does and vice versa. We just need not forget to stop and smell the flowers.
Thank you for taking that journey to Osypenko, and giving us all such a valuable lesson.

Despite this family is indeed not typical, even weird, the main point that you have shown is priceless. You show that life is in small things like fresh berries, blue skies, laughter of your children, people who you love are safe and healthy. When you live in a big city you sometimes forget about it. And you reminded me...It's really hard time now in Ukraine, but wee need to stay strong and do all the best to save our country. Thanks for helping us appreciate what we have and get force to make our lives and out Motherland better.

What you said at the end of your episode made me cry... I can tell you at first hand, yes... I miss that unity & simplicity of Ukraine. I live in PA right now, but planning to go back home=Ukraine! America give me a lot, but people in the USA have a different values and idea of family and friendship...

Osypenko has been under Russian occupation since the beginning of the war. In one of Santenello's replies to one of the comments here, he says that the family is safe as they moved to Western Ukraine.
Man, when you were comparing bikes and speaking about your experience around 10:00-11:00, you almost got me crying. I had very similar one - feeling difference between hard training with Strava on, in lycra, on carbon bike and riding trash bike through Ukrainian villages and fields in hot summer. Thank you for your honest and open minded view. It's just such a great soothing feeling and inner love awaking from watching your videos.

Man, hearing you talk about the simple life is awesome. But it seems like maybe you grew up in a big city or a liberal area? Because those simple lives exist in the USA as well. I grew up in the city, but with amazing family that took me to the countryside and the mountains regularly and had the same experiences as those kids. Glad you are finally living what you missed out on as a kid. Unfortunately a lot of people will never have this.
