- I fully did not appreciate how great these jets were when the RAF and Royal Navy flew them all the time in UK skies.
Catching the Spanish and Italian Navy Harriers flying in the UK today was truly epic. I think it's fair to say that these jet put a smile on a lot of people's faces at RIAT today.
Thanks so much to the Spanish and Italian Navy for sending these jets to RIAT this year. Absolutely ace 😎

Still a miraculous and almost unbelievable thing to behold.....
It really is. I remember seeing a kid at an airshow years ago who could not believe a fast jet STOPPED in the sky in front of him. He simply couldn't get over it. I still feel like that kid when I see the Harrier come into the hover. Magic 😎
I've just been reading about their combat record in the Falklands War.
Still got it! couldn't take my eyes of her, fantastic display, thank you Spain!!!😅😅😅😅
I agree! I want to write to the Spanish Navy and thank them for sending these beautiful jets to the U.K. for this. Awesome to see 👌
@@UKAviationMovies I agree, far more entertaining than that weird American "replacement" we've been lumbered with. Bring back the good old 70S/80s airshows!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I haven't seen a Harrier display like this since I was a kid. It's still ridiculously impressive to see a plan just floating in the air like this!
Thanks for a great video. 👍🏼
Thanks for the comment and the watch. It’s great to see them still flying 👌
This man is a ninja with a Harrier.
The Harrier is a true legend in the history of aviation. The first VTOL fighter, and by far the most successful. This is something the Brits should really be proud of.
Thanks for the comment Jacob. It’s a great fighter. We retired them from the Navy and Air Force way too soon I think 😔
@@UKAviationMovies I don't know the reasons why they were retired. Maybe they became too costly to maintain and operate, or maybe their slow speed and limited range is considered too much of a problem, or maybe now that the UK has a skijump aircraft carrier there is much less need for VTOL. It's sad, because this was really one of the most iconic military aircraft anywhere in the world.
When I was a little boy I had the chance to visit the Paris Airshow with my parents. I will always remember the moment we arrived there, just as a Harrier was flying its display. It was hovering there, stationary up in the air and the 8 years old me was stunned, thinking wait a minute, this shouldn't be possible ;)
@@jacobzimmermann59 You're right. I think it was a combination of those factors. The F-35 is way more capable, but the transition from Harrier and Tornado to F-35 feels so rushed here in the UK. At least we have Typhoons to take up the slack a bit.
I remember shows like that back in the 80s and 90s too. Seeing a fast jet flying backwards then running in at 100ft and 500 knots only a few minutes later 😎Good times!
Except that this is an AV-8B+ that was made the US, not the UK. It is better in every way than the original Sea Harriers.
The merit goes to both parties.
The British created the Harrier.
The Americans improved it (greatly) as the Harrier II.
Love this aircraft! So proud of being Spanish and being able to see her around! Fantastic Hovering, it’s like magic to see an aircraft holding position in the air like an Helicopter! Superb clip man! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the comment dude! It's absolutely awesome of your Navy to bring these jets over to the UK for RIAT. They've made a lot of people super happy this year! 🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸

Harrier and Mosquito, are two brillant british planes.
Excellent filming of a superb plane taken out of service FAR too early by the short sighted MOD
Thanks a lot. I agree. After seeing the Spanish AND Italian Navy Harriers this year at RIAT I can't help but think we sold them off WAY too soon.
Well they may not have if they'd updated them the American AV-8B+ like this one here is. I find it ironic that the UK invented it but the USA made it truly formidable and had better export success with it than the UK did.
Bloody brilliant. One of the best planes ever. Used to take them for granted bitd seeing them at the various air shows several times a year. Fantastic to see them one more time.
Same here, I live in Phoenix and until recently we had AV-8B's come here every weekend. At the very least we could make the trip to Yuma and catch them. Unfortunately those days are gone and they have become pretty rare in AZ.
Thanks for the comment. I'm absolutely with you on that. Seeing the Spanish and Italian Harriers yesterday made me realise just how great they are - and how much I miss them. A true icon.
Damn! The US marines still have a ton of them though don't they? I guess they're getting replaced with F-35s?
Creo que es el caza mas bonito que se ha echo nunca.
That take-off was sick!
Wonderful display by the iconic Harrier!! Excellent camera work too! Thumbs up! 👌😊👍
Thanks a lot Knight 👍
Superb display of hovering
Thanks for the watch and the comment 👍
The Harrier is the only plane that I have seen FLY backwards.
It’s a legendary jet. Thanks for the comment 👍
Me too, it was a RAF GR.3 in an air show back in 1984.
When you think most it was done before computers, simulation just hard graft, brilliant engineers and brave pilots and the people who pushed it and signed it off.
Great comment Chunder27. I totally agree. We designed some cool stuff back then. I hope we're able to continue to do so, but I worry for the future at times 🧐
Father was a flight technician on the Harrier. Got to sit in one once. Incredible aircraft. Fantastic performance and video, Thanks :)
You're very welcome. Thanks for the comment and for sharing the lovely memory. Absolute respect to your dad. I've got huge respect for people that fly and maintain these jets. A superb aircraft and still absolutely magic to see it fly.
Brilliant camera work and - lovely flying by the pilot too
Thanks a lot. It was such a treat to see these jets at RIAT ❤️
The Harrier /AV8B is an amazing aircraft !!
100%
Stupendous performance expertly filmed. What more could you ask?
Thanks a lot for the kind comment. It's such a beautiful jet 😎
Harrier the best ever
The good old harrier jump jet, a blast from my childhood past 🫡
I think most of us felt that when he took off into his display. Like being a kid again 😍
Wow.👍
😎
👍👌...fabulously filmed!!..awesome display by the Spanish pilot!👌... I know that we have the F35 now. It's a great piece of kit, but nothing beats the old Harrier jump jet in action!!!...I always enjoy watching this aircraft display, thanks to the Spanish Air Force for showing it!!..I have some fabulous footage of 5 Harriers hovering as in your video , this was at RIAT some years ago, there were about 8 Harriers , if I remember correctly it was a tactical display, was an incredible display!!!📸👍....keep these great videos coming, mate, they are brilliant!! Regards Paul 😁👍
Ahhh thanks a lot Paul. I always love your comments. Really appreciated pal. You should put some of your aircraft footage on your channel. I for one would love to see the Harrier vid you mentioned! 👍
Spanish Navy, please don't start a inter-service feud here 😄
@@diegoferreiro9478 😂😂
Superb and marvellous engineering marvel on this AV-8B Harrier II as it is a legend 😊🤩
It really is a legend. Have you seen them over in Singapore Douglas? I wondering the US Marines have ever brought theirs over?
@@UKAviationMovies hmm I definitely did not see it as it rare for them to come to Singapore but maybe it came in the 1990s or early 2000s 🤔
Most welcome too bro 😊
Superb flying and the best close up video of the Harrier that I have ever seen
Thanks a lot for the kind comment Nic. Sometimes I go in too close I think but I can’t help myself sometimes 😂
ARMADA Spanish pilot....... THE BEST........ 💪
They fly beautiful displays at RIAT this year 👍😎
Saw this yesterday. Very nice to see a Harrier display again
It is isn’t it. Such a great jet 👍👍👍
Stunning Ben 👌
Thanks a lot matey. Such a great jet. I really didn't think we'd see them flying again in the UK 😍
Still my old time favourite nothing beats the ending bow ❤
I agree. Do you remember the old Royal Navy display. I remember seeing a mega bow at the end like 45 degrees or more. Maybe I'm being sentimental? 😂
@@UKAviationMovies No your right i was thinking the same thing they used to bow much lower. I vaguely remember something about an accident happening at that point which stopped them doing it but I could be wrong.
@@sundiver100 Oh jeez. I don't remember that, sounds gnarly :( I deffo remember the RAF display being a but more wild though. In any case the Spanish this year were awesome 😎
Superb
Thanks 👌
Awesome! Wish I could be there but already booked in for next year!!!
Thanks for the comment. Too bad you couldn't make it this year, but I'm glad you got to see it here at least. Hope the weather is better next year for us! 😂
Great Catch
Thanks VC. A rare bird in the UK now :(
Nádhera!
Still the best VTOL airplane that has existed to date.
The Harrier is My Favourite Jet Aircraft. After The Tornado
Such a great aircraft 😎
EAV-8B
The best aircraft to come from the USA. By a LONG way
USA?
The UK should be ashamed that the only way we can see such a beautiful display is to have the Spanish Navy do it. The fact that the UK has no Harriers in service or even in operation for display purposes is criminal. This one of the true exceptional frames ever to be developed and I still believe as other countries do that it still has a purpose to serve in modern aviation.
Seen this many times lol
I had no idea these things still flew 😳💪
Only a few left who operate them now so they’re pretty rare. I definitely didn’t know the Italian Navy still operate them. Soon to be replaced with F-35Bs apparently.
That beauty would come in handy in Ukraine right now.
Too bad it won't never happen.
2nd!
Very vulnerable to modern manpads. Look what they do to SU25s and KA52s. F35s are said to be safer to fly. A lot of Harriers suffered loss of control crashes.
@@bobcannell7603 Agreed. But which fighter is safe in such a hostile airspace anyway?
I still think that the Harriers would be very useful if used in guerrilla tactics from just behind Ukrainian lines to minimise the threat of enemy's SAMs, like "hit and run" ground attacks with PGMs or just to deny those darn KA-25 easy shots with ATGMs. Harriers have the same APG-65 radar of the legacy Hornet and can shoot AMRAAMs: I reckon that a ruZZian KA52 pilot suddently painted by an APG-65 would get out of Dodge real quick instead of leisurely sit in hovering to plink at AFU tanks from a safe distance with ATGMs.
Of course these are pure speculations on my part about a "what-if" scenario (I'm just a military aviation enthusiast and scale modeler) but I do believe that Ukraine would be way happier to have Harriers in its tool box than to have no Harriers at all.
Hovered over us at Totterdown farm,,,, breathtaking
Woah! Having a Harrier hovering overhead does nothing for the tinnitus! 😂
@@UKAviationMovies Pardon?
😂😂😂
Its nice to see the olden day F35 flying in the UK
It was ace to see it back in the U.K. again 👌
@@UKAviationMovies wish I could see it in person
Make one with diamond wing like YF23
T H A N K S....im sure...a dogfight in a small box will be deadly for many modern fighters
Thanks for the comment 👍
British invention at its very best!!!!😊😊
The McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II is not British.
I agree. It's an ingenious design, and still a fabulous aircraft 👍
Still a British invention……….
@@AA-xo9uw It was updated by Mcdonnel Douglas, but it's a complete British design.
@@anglonig1"but it's a complete British design."(sic)
Incorrect. Bristol and Hawker received a lot of financial and technical assistance from the MWDP - primarily the United States - due to the fact that Duncan Sandys and the Mod refused to fund development of the Pegaus/Kestrel/Harrier. The UK also abandoned the Harrier II redesign from 1975-1981 returning only after McDonnell Douglas had completed the work and Thatcher had become Prime Minister as evidenced by the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in August 1981 in which the UK received 40% of the labor man hours for Harrier II airframes. Suggest you read Harrier 809 by Rowland White, particularly page 75, and become edified.
has a part of Harrier ground maintenance crew i have to say the filming is bad in the most important moments of the Demo...for ex at 4:00 looks good but we have no perspective of the ground so viewers cant make sense of it, i know she is in a stand still configuration because the nozzles and flaps are down but you should zoom out a bit sometimes so everyone understands what's going on , beautiful picture tho
Thanks for the comment. I do tend to get 'greedy' when zooming in. I just can't help myself sometimes 😂
Q........what uses more fuel......vertical or horizontal takeof
I'd guess at vertical in the Harrier as they have to use a high power setting to lift.
lucky pilot don't pay fuel bill@@UKAviationMovies
Great British invention...apparently we gave them all away 🤔
"Great British invention"(sic)
Incorrect. The McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II isn't British and the first generation Harrier wouldn't exist without the funding and technical assistance provided by the MWDP - primarily the United States.
Please show viffing
British frog foot king charles the third it can take on putin just keep cool ok ?❤❤❤❤❤❤
Can anyone tell me the reason the British got rid of them.
Hang on...... I can give you an answer but it'll take me a while to edit out all the expletives first!
I had best not mention the Nimrod then.
Septiccalling have you spoken to the Tiger lately.
@@dickyuk980 .....tell The Tiger, our race will have to be postponed. Indefinitely........
Well done. Very few get it 👍🏻🇬🇧
The UK is broke and couldn't afford to keep them.
@@AA-xo9uw Yet we paid millions for the F35 ++The one they crashed would have kept a squadron of Harriers going for another 10 years 😁😁
Disappointing. No maneuvers in the vertical? Not even ONE loop? What I'd really like to see is a high speed pass, into a reverse half cuban eight into a rolling vertical landing all in one maneuver.
That'd be something. To be honest, for me, was was just such a thrill to see the AV-8 one more time. A pretty rare bird these days 😳
Would get a better idea of movement if zoomed out.... 😊
Thanks Dave. A few people have said that about my vids. I get greedy with the zoom from time-to-time. Thanks for the feedback though, noted! 👍
its British, enough said, i worked on F35, the american grey beards loved it....
"its British, enough said,"(sic)
The McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II isn't British.
All good things have their heyday 🫶
I agree. We've moved on. We now we have supersonic capable STOVL stealth jets 😎
