What makes you think this thing would bring $3000? Perhaps $500, but certainly not $3000.
It turned out beautiful! Congrats to the client for choosing the right guy and giving him the freedom to design the bench.
The nailer is a great tip. I use my 23g nailer constantly for holding things in place. The nail is so small no one can see it and it’s a second pair of hands. That nailer is probably he most used tools in my shop.

This is excellent! I love the "glaring errors" and their fixes you include. I want to do something similar, though I'm stuck at the phase of locating black locust boards for less than a small fortune. :(
You being an engineer I am sure you know what “ crowning” is when framing . You never mentioned crowning the boards for the seat ? I wish you would have shown the finished sanded bottom after epoxy. Talking about it is not the same as showing it. As a carpenter myself I would have use two spacer locations breaking the top into three sections. That top is going to need a lot more help over time. Oddly enough I believe the sun is a bigger threat than rain. The completed project looks very nice. In another note. You mentioned you are an engineer , mind if ask in what field ?

The finger joints are going to be very stable, but as the top boards bend down from the weight of people sitting on them, the tendency will be for the base of the legs to shift apart; the overall length will actually increase. It would be a simple matter to install a stringer board while you're gluing up the legs, which would stiffen the bench by stabilizing the trapezoid. Additionally (to my eye at least) it would also improve the looks.

Thats awesome. Thanks for the video and I hope you can go full time at this soon. I do have one question. I see this over and over from great wood workers and never understood why they do it this way. Why go back with the router after the fact? It’s a lot easier to run a board through a table or even put an edge on a piece of wood that’s not connected.
I just built the same bench from "pine and poplar" plans. Used white wood from Lowe's. I'll never use that wood for a project again. I'll go pine select or cedar. Great video. I like the angle you used and cutting the legs at the end of the build. Keep going!!
Which wood is white wood again?
White wood is SPF spruce, pine, fir. It has a lot of knots and needs a lot of sanding. I would go with select pine.
I've used salt a few times for large-area glue ups. It works well.

Very few salt grains spread out along the glue joint really does work to help it slip less.

You say that Titebond III is ideal for this application, and I agree. Then you go on to say epoxy would be good too. This may not be correct. Epoxy is a brittle adhesive which will not give when wood around it becomes wet and expands. Joints like this will fail unless all the wood is completely sealed against any moisture intrusion. And this is very difficult. I know this from almost sinking in a boat that I built. To me, the only decent alternative to TB3 for outdoor applications is a flexible Polyurethane such as 3M 5200.
Really like the bench. I made something similar years ago, and my "client" painted it with light blue latex paint. I actually cried a little when I saw. I do have a critique, but I have 3 reasons for it, so I think it's pretty reasonable. First, I began woodworking in the 70s and 80s, and back then EVERYTHING that was considered modern had big round-overs on every edge. So I'm pre-senitized against pieces with major round over (but that's on me). Secondly, this is the second video of yours that I've viewed, and in both you have ended up rounding over every edge at the end. Thirdly (and most importantly), this is a very angle-y piece, so mixing angles and round-overs seems to be inconsistent from a design approach. I definitely understand the need to break sharp edges to protect them (and people sitting), but it can also be done with a chamfer bit. Just saying.
That epoxy trick at the end to level the legs is great idea.
Probably a really good idea that you placed those spacers before you routed the edges of the long bench tops, or there would have been a gap at the top edges that would have not only looked strange, might have caught clothing, pinched skin, or otherwise have been a little hazardous. That epoxy looks really good too, and a great enhancement!!! So, another good project that I actually learned a lot from! And glad you are back in the saddle again!
actually it would be even worse to route the edges with differences in height. you could go too deep in one pass and wont scratch the wood at all on the next one

Can you tell us if the table saw is still your Ridgid saw? Just curious if you had changed saws. It looks “different” to me somehow.
Additional feature of a wooden bench at that location is, if he ever gets tired of it or it gets damaged beyond use, well… It’s made of wood and there’s a fire pit right there.
I'm sure you've been asked this but what is and where did you get your wall covering for the shop? Basic barn wood? Love it.
Very nice build. And yeah, I can understand the rather high price if you figure that there is a fair amount of lumber, design time, milling time, a process which takes up much of your shop so that little else can be done during the build, knowing how to fix issues as (or before) they arise, etc. And since engineers are typically paid pretty well your time should be valued pretty well.
I like screws to be involved in builds. When they give way, wood glue joints sometimes give way catastrophically. If a few screws are involved it seems to me that the failure is a bit more controlled. Just my opinion but I like that you used a bunch of screws in the build.
That bench is on my bucket list. I've had a few family members ask me to build one

As for using salt on anything in my wood shop, it will be a cold day in you-know-where before I get any kind of salt anywhere near my woodworking equipment. I don't need the rust. Nice project. Not my style but that's what makes the world go 'round, but I did pick up some good tips. Keep the good stuff coming.

This is why I'll never be able to quit my job to do this which I absolutely love full time.
I understand different geographical areas charge differently, but if you don't mind me asking, how do you determine a price of a job like that?
I take the cost of materials plus $50 per hour for me and shop expenditures. I would assume you had 10 hours into that project?
This is why I say I'll never get there at least here in the south east.
I'm not saying anything ugly towards ya brother, just honestly wondering so I can adjust my thought process when bidding jobs and not basically give away my work comparably speaking.
Just to make his title a bit more clear - he didn't charge $3000 for that bench (or at least I assume he didn't, he didn't mention what the price tag was). The $3000 comes from the Herman Miller Nelson Platform Bench, which his design was roughly based on.
I like the bench. Glad you decided to never say never again. Under certain circumstances I consider all opportunities.
What is the deal with people complaining about the track saw?
My plastic chairs and I feel attacked. Also, they're not next to the keg... They're next to the old fridge my buddies made into a kegerator!

Yes use salt. It works great! Just a tiny bit is all you need, don’t use enough to make prison food taste ok.

Overall awesome job. You really should seal that wood with something like boiled linseed oil or something else. Cedar does rot, though not quite as fast as some other woods like pine.
why did you cut off the rounded edge of the boards? Then round them over again. Could you have left the rounded part of the boards?

@@Cythraul9 Yes, it's an interesting repaint of the R4560. The triangular bevel knob at 7:56 shows it's a Rigid, not the Delta 36-725T2. Other than cosmetics like that, it's the same saw.

Salt or sawdust?
There are a lot of good reasons traditional benches are designed the way they are.
Great outdoor furniture costs money. Homecrest, Tropitone, Malibu Outdoor. They don't sell this stuff at a big box store. Buy once cry once - from companies that can actually get you parts if needed. Or of course, build your wood stuff!
The broken bed frame clip might as well have been my brother in law. He was apparently playing with his toddler son (my nephew) and busted the connection between the footboard and side rails of the bed. My sister was not happy with him, but after a lot of looking around at prices, I decided I could make a frame cheaper than anything she could buy. It took longer than intended since she wanted to stain it and seal it but couldn't find the time to do that, but when we finally put it in her room and threw the mattress on it, the next thing I hear from the living room is the loud thud of him leaping onto the bed. I trust my work, but that doesn't mean I wanted it tested to full strain. At least it held together fine, and will be an ugly family heirloom now. haha

I'm gonna be honest: your reason for using cheaper worse quality lumber is pure sophistry.
Yeah the material is going to be exposed to the elements and take on more wear than something that's used indoors, but that's no reason to use wood which you yourself admit is of worse quality. It's in fact the opposite, especially for $3000, I can only speak for myself but if I asked someone to build me an outdoor table for 3K and I found out they did that, then I'd be fucking pissed.
Especially, when the reaon given basically boils down to: "Pffft, it's gonna break anyway so why give a shit." There's a reason stuff made back in the day that was meant to be used outside still exists today, and it isn't "who gives a shit if it breaks."
Look, what you make for your own use is up to you and if you think that this would be acceptable for your own use then thats fine by me, but trying to sell that to another person for $3000, now that's actually fucked up IMO.
My apologies if you feel that I've taken your opinion out of context or twisted it, but from what I can see that's what this boils down to.

(not a "F" word fanboy, but I do love the one sander I have from them) Nice bench, and liked that your taking things to what you want to build. I do my work for the same reason. I also do landscape photography (since 2002) but Covid happened and I needed a creative outlet. And like you I have a day job.
