Upgrading the Thinkpad T510 for 2020! SSD + Max RAM

  • Putting some elbow grease and new parts into a T510 that has been sitting in a drawer for several years. Even today these machines can still be very competent with the right upgrades. Here are a few items you may need for your T510 at this stage in its life-
    SSD: amzn.to/39IVoHx
    Caddy/bumpers: amzn.to/2sQ25Hb
    Ram (Crucial): amzn.to/39EDPsj
    Ram (budget- I have used this brand and recommend it): amzn.to/2MUQiOT
    Replacement battery: amzn.to/2MXqTE7
    The max ram for this laptop is 8GB (two 4GB sticks) which is a limitation of the cpu itself (this generation, not able to be modified with cpu swap). You can use any 2.5" SATA SSD to upgrade the drive, up to 4TB drives have been tested. The 256gb linked is the right balance of cost and functionality in my opinion.

    I purchased a T510 as my first Thinkpad a few months ago and just ordered the parts to finally upgrade today. A refurb'd 500 GB 860 evo and 8GB RAM on their way. This video was incredibly relevant to what I'll be doing, so thanks for the upload!
    I use this laptop primarily as a "bored at work" and on the go machine for places I don't want to take my Inspiron. Fell in love with this beast fairly quickly and look forward to making it a little snappier!
    Still getting used to this Trackpoint though...

    This video is just what I needed. I learned I was too chicken to open up the computer itself and clean it myself (lol), but installing the upgrades like the RAM on the underside was a breeze!
    Other videos I watched for this laptop had a metal structure for the RAM slot. Yours was plastic, like mine, and seeing that high angle of insertion is what did the trick. You're a big help! Thanks so much!

    Nice video and useful information. Wished I had seen this ideo a week ago.
    I was in the process of installing my Lenovo T510 with Ubuntu 19.10.
    Learned that its 2GB memory was not enough, so
    I fumbled around and finally figured out how to install memory from the bottom.
    Today I received a single strip of 4GB memory off Ebay and installed it just about an hour ago.
    Ubuntu runs great now.
    Next, after watching your video I think I'll purchase another 4GB memory module to bring
    my laptop from 6GB to 8GB, and then install a SSD. Didn't realize that SSD had fallen that low in price.
    You are right, your information is a great way to make these old laptops relevant in the world of 2020.

      If you used the ram in the description links, it will work. Take both sticks out, put one back in firmly. Boot the laptop. If it booted, shut it down and put the second stick in then boot again. Most times when a laptop doesn't boot after a ram upgrade, the ram isn't fully seated.

      If you use the computer solely for web browsing, a normal harddrive is fine. An SSD will have much faster boot times though, and if you use it for anything else- you'll love the quick read times for loading different programs. On my personal machines, I upgrade them to SSDs right off the bat. Its really noticeable once you've been using an SSD system to go to one with a mechanical harddrive again. At what point does it restart? Before or after Windows starts to load? As a general troubleshooting guideline, I would pull out both new sticks of ram. Plug one old ram stick into a slot and boot. Shut it down, pull that same ram stick out and put it in the other slot, boot it again. Assuming both go well, your slots themselves are fine. Take one stick from the new ram kit and take the same steps- assuming all good, do the same steps with the second new ram stick.

    Can we insert both HDD as well as 128 SSD at same time????

      The slot will only accommodate one drive, however you can buy an optical drive adapter for a separate drive if you wanted. This is the adapter- amzn.to/3IHuZMU

    Can you mix samsung 1Gb and 8 GB ram ( keeping same brand: Samsung)

    • @GarageMaxedOut
      @GarageMaxedOut  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but then you will no longer be in dual channel mode. Much better performance to use two modules of the same capacity.

    I just replaced the two 2gb cards in my t510 with two 4gb cards, but now I'm getting a black screen on start up. I ended up installing one of the new and one of the old and then refreshing my Windows Index Experience and it recognizes 6gb of ram but I cant get it to work with both the new cards at once. HELP!

      Probably not seated all the way- I would remove, and try one slot at a time

      @@GarageMaxedOut Hi there, I have exactly the same problem with Crucial DDR3L 1600 SODIMM, any luck with solution? Do you have the link for BIOS Update? I have tried to find on Lenovo sites, but without luck. Thank you for any support here.

    What of games are going on with the renovation

      @GarageMaxedOut  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This won't increase your ability to play games that much- games are mainly dependent on the graphics card and processor.

    Hey I have a t510i it's a 2gb and i5 m560 what is the difference the t510i and the T510

    • @GarageMaxedOut
      @GarageMaxedOut  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Functionally, not much. When they were released the T510i was a budget variant so they changed some of the components- no WWAN, no Intel vPro,
      and instead of Intel 6200 WLAN, it has Intel 1000 WLAN. It was only offered with one i3 and i5 cpu choice.

      On the T420, Lenovo officially says that it can have up to 8GB of RAM, but you can actually upgrade it to 16GB. It might be the same with a T510 but I don't know for sure.

      @@anonymous82783 unfortunately the T510 uses first gen mobile i5/i7 cpus which have a max ram of 8GB restricted by the cpu.

    Worst design ever having the second RAM under the keyboard. Odd, on an otherwise very well designed unit.

      Yeah, I think they did that to shrink the footprint of the ram section of the logic board.
