Christ answered Peter using a mathematical expression: “as much as seventy times seven”. Because we solve math problems, using 490 as an answer choice is appropriate. The whole idea was for Peter to question why would anyone sin against a person that many times, and is it possible for someone to sin against another that many times? Christ wanted him and us to understand that we are to always forgive one another. Forgiveness is unlimited.

Moses lost patience with the israelites and hit the rock out of anger this lost the Blessing of Jehovah! Imagine,this one act kept him from entering the promised land. Moses brother did not enter either because he sinned also against Jehovah!
Poor Moses after all his reluctant obedience in the beginning and fear, the hard work and persistence because of the people's behaviour lost entrance into the promise land.y

The correct answer is that Moses said in anger, “must we bring you water out of this rock” The sin is not that Moses striking the rock in anger; but that Moses allowed his anger to cause him to sin, by making an untruthful statement ‘we give you water’ This is why Aaron was cut off from entering the promise land too. Numbers 20:7-11 Now you might be asking yourself why would God get upset about who provided the ‘Water’ In John the “I Am” statements Jesus states that He is the ‘living water’ John 7:37-48 and Jesus meeting with the Samaria women John 4:4-15. So the truth is that God provided the water in the wilderness not Aaron and Moses. 🙏🏽

After all, the religious leaders of the day taught that one had to forgive only three times! Jesus replied: “Not, Up to seven times, but, Up to seventy-seven times.” Bit of a stretch to say 7X70. When No.70 isn't even mentioned.
In the King James Bible, the Living Bible and the NIV Bible, Matthew 18:22 clearly states that Jesus says 70 times 7. Don't know which version you are using, Brother, but it may not be accurate. 🙏🤔
@Sam Son I think if you look in footnotes of translations that use 77 times, then they may well acknowledge that it could easily be translated as [70 lots of 7]. As in "Not one lot of 7, but 70 (seven times)" All depends on if there's a pause! 😊 Personally, I'm not concerned which was uttered. As @Rose Seward has said, "the gist is that we should always be ready to forgive, no matter how many times". And you can definitely have a point for your knowledge of 77 👍😊

Moses hit the rock twice, but his sin was disobeying God's command to hold the staff over the rock. Moses was angry with the people complaining !
