  • Oh what a delight to read Murakami. I'm so happy to have discovered his books this year after many people recommending them to me. So thank YOU!
In this review, I share my thoughts of After Dark. I talk about what the book is about and it made me reflect on aspects of my own life that I may be missing a part of another world in the wee hours of the night when I'm usually sleeping.
Let me know what you think of his books. I'm not entirely sure if there's an order to read his books as I've simply been reading them as I find them.
    Happy reading!

Love how happy Murakami makes you! I loved the structure of this novel and what he explored. I also like how he doesn't answer those questions you mentioned, he does it in all of his books.

@@LifeLessonsFromBooks Yes, of course! I found one review you made of a book I recently read and then I noticed you've made several reviews on books I love. It seems we have some similar tastes. I watched a few and saved several to watch later (I am that much of a nerd I love to hear people talk about books, especially ones I love 🤣🤣) .

I recently read this book and I'm fascinated by it. It evokes a feeling within me that I am incapable of describing or understanding. The book gave me this melancholia. As I see it, the book explores time and how humans interact with the passage of time, especially how people can even change (like you mentioned in your review) at night time.
IMO it is also an appreciation of sleep as an activity. Maybe I am just filled with romantic notions about night-time and sleep as I have only recently stopped using sleep as a tool to punish/discipline myself. I spent so many years overworking myself and regularly pulling all-nighters thinking it was a sign of my diligence. That's why descriptions of Mari's sister sleeping was some of the best part of the book for me as they helped me reflect on my own relationship with sleep.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful explanation of how you found the theme of sleep in this book. I certainly can understand the melancholy you mentioned as this book “feels” this way when you read it. One of the stand outs for me when I read this is that I have no idea what happens after dark. To date, I’ve never pulled all-nighters and hardly go out at night anymore. That struck me one day when I realised that I’m missing a world out there because all of my activities are done during daylight hours. It’s weird to realise that as soon as evening sets, I’m closed up inside. Or sleeping until the next day.

Hello Wendy and thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. Hope you stick with it but then again, that’s the great thing about books. We all get different experiences from them. I love his books but I’ve not heard them as audiobooks. My intention is to buy his entire collection…..one day. 🤣
