I like that the crown can be equipped using mana from either Phyrexian Altar, or Ashnod's Altar, almost explicitly referenced on the card. Either altar with the crown basically gives your creatures "Sacrifice this creature: draw a card." Sure, that's not stupidly busted like Skullclamp, but it's still a pretty cool engine.
I remember in like, 2007 or 2008, my local decided to do something different for an fnm and we agreed on tribal. I asked if there any bans and was told "no artifact lands!". Excellent. Gives me a good idea on where to start too! I won that event with my Myr Deck that was mostly all the mana myr and the ones that had affinity for artifacts, and skullclamp. Although a lot of my creatures lacked any real board presence, just the ability to tear through my deck and keep playing stuff was too much for most opponents. I was also hoping to get the prize for most under-represented tribe as well, but someone else came with Myr. I didnt even get the chance to play them either cause they sat on the bottom tables. That prize did go to the rightful winner though with a guy with a mutant deck, but he had stuck pictures of the xmen on all the cards. Was a fun time. I really miss it. Support your local store before they shut down friends.
a jitte is a blunt weapon designed to disarm an opponent so it's probably one of the better equipments for putting up your butt. I learned about jittes from Rhystic Studies' video on Kamigawa.
I think Brother's War will continue the long and rich history of busted artifacts, in the form of powerstone tokens. Even with the artifact only restriction and the fact that they come out tapped, I think permanent, populate-able mana rocks for artifacts are going to have a massive impact.
I haven't heard anyone else voice this opinion. And while I don't necessarily agree, it's not outside the realm of possibilities. I think the nonartifact restriction and etb tapped are sufficient safeguards. I feel like the initial impression of Powerstones was even a bit "meh" when the new Karn was spoiled in Dominaria United. I am low key wanting some broken-ish shit to happen in standard though.

I was asking other kids to give me their worthless cards so I could start with something (my mom was done buying me cards since I went frome yugi-oh to pokemon to chaotic to mtg in 3 years). Then I was given many things, supposedly worthless, like 4 skullclamp.
I played a lot of Mirrodin block Draft, and it was fun consistently getting passed a rare in the first Dark steel pass because someone pulled a Skullclamp. Remember, it was banned from Standard constructed play, but it was perfectly legal in Limited. Skullclamp plus Myr Retriever combo for hella card advantage.
a possible way to "fix" auras would be have them etb and then target a creature rather than targetting on cast, if they fail to attach they go to graveyard but if they have an effect like Angelic Destiny they would go backj to hand.
the funny interesting irony about Skull Clamp in "fast" affinity decks back in Standard back then. If you were playing a super efficient high speed affinity deck that was trying to win "almost guaranteed" by turn 3 or 4, Skull Clamp actually slowed you down too much to be played, players instead switched it out with Cranial Plating as it allowed you to just strait up kill your opponent a turn faster then trying to spend mana to draw cards that "may or may not" allow you to win that turn or the next turn. I remember clearly a "near mirror match" affinity vs. affinity where one player was playing 4 copies of Skull Clamp but no Cranial Plating and the other player was playing zero with instead playing 3 or 4 copies (I forget how many) of Cranial Plating (generally these decks had to play one or the other as playing both in the deck was very clumsy if the goal was to win by turn 3 or 4) and the player with skull clamp used it draw 4 cards, and drew NOTHING he could play that turn as he was out of mana, the other player was able to slam down Cranial Plating and swing in for the win due to the other player having 2 less creatures on the field because he clamped them away for cards that did him no good. After that the player that was playing skull clamps removed them from his affinity deck in place of Cranial Plating and did better. Note this is ONLY the case for "hard aggro" affinity designed to win as fast as possible NOT mid range type affinity where Skull Clamp is always better.
I think the turn of phrase is 'pissing in(to) the wind', which originated from when a fire could not be put out by water due to strong winds blowing it away, thus making it pointless to try.
Skullclamp is my fav equipment! I remember seeing Skullclamp spoiled online. I read it for the first time, and I stared at it. I read it a second time, and started blinking. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I read it a third time, and said aloud, “that get’s banned!” I was not wrong! I got three of them at the prerelease, and I enjoyed playing with them (and a 4th that I traded for) for the few months that they were allowed. They worked well in affinity and goblins! Good times and nostalgia.
I think Skullclamp is super interesting from a game design perspective, because it was clearly intended to create a state in which you could give a creature pseudo-evasion which you also wanted to keep back as a blocker to dissuade your opponent from swinging into it. And then players saw that and went 'nah, just gonna kill my small dude and draw two instead'
I have no idea what the draft format was like, but the original kamigawa block has so many amazing cards in it. Several modern staples throughout the years, at least one card bannable in legacy and it's absolutely packed with commander cards.
If Kamigawa had been released before Mirrodin, it would have been fine, but Mirrodin came first and had far too much of a difference in tempo. Ravager decks with consistent 2nd or 3rd turn wins, even after the release of Kamigawa and the banning/restricting of key cards in the deck, were just far too fast to deal with. Tooth and Nail into two more Kokushos (under a previous iteration of the Legendary rule), while fun when it worked, wasn't quite fast enough most of the time. Same goes for the toolbox deck, with Rude Awakening being one of its win cons.
Having played draft and constructed back then, it was different. Due to the way the legend rule worked back then, and the fact that the set was so legendary creature heavy, it became something of a race to get your legends out first if you ended up in a color mirror match. It also had 2 exceptional cards in rend flesh and rend spirit, though flesh definitely was the better of the two as it was just a power crept terror. The set was also much more low powered compared to the previous two blocks, so explosive combos going off or ending in a single turn was less common from what I recall. Honestly? Looking back on it, it was a nice breath of fresh air after the Storm, Affinity and Sunburst decks we had been playing just a year or two prior.

Any new copies of the same legend go to the yard immediately. I don't remember if it was a state based action back then or if it was triggered.
At some point WotC gotta make a new batterskull that, instead of being +4/+4 lifelink vigilance attached to a vanilla 0/0 phyrexian germ, is +2/+2 lifelink attached to a 2/2 vigilance knight token.
Something like that would be reasonable because if you pop the creature the leftover equipment is just mids. Batterskull being able to loop itself is what pushes it in my opinion.
I remember hearing that shadowspear had to have a mana cost of either 1 or more than 4 because it would be too good with Haktos the Unscarred, so they chose 1

Costing 2 to cast is a huge difference; you can't attach it to your one-drop on turn 2 without some kind of acceleration. If it cost 1 to cast then it seems very strong; turn 1 Diregraf Ghoul or whatever other 2-power creature, then turn 2 cast and equip and attack for 4, and be ready to get a card back. Turn 3 Vampire Nighthawk or whatever.
Not equipment related but I do have to say, Light-Paws really does make Auras absurd. She turns every Aura into a guaranteed two for one, even if you can only get in a few turns with her around she's absurd. I have a historic deck built around her and she snowballs so hard, it's hard to beat her once she has protection on her. Not to mention it makes her an entirely different play style than other Voltron commanders, like Uril for example, and for that I think she's very unique and powerful. Love that fox
Also saga was what broke hammer, it was like a fun t2-3 deck before saga, and now with all the iteration might be better but saga is what makes it one of the best decks in the format, I think hammer itself is a pretty well designed card.

To be honest I’m not sure how balanced jitte would be before the change, smack on like turn 3-4 and double your mana regardless if the creature connects with your opponent does not seem very balanced to me lol.
I remember right before kah-blade, we had quest for the holy relic, turn two lock out if you had the nuts hand. Pretty decent win rate. And before that I was playing Valakut and Primeval Titan. God damn, good times.
They really should have removed Titans from the next core set, gently nudging us to play the praetors. As it stood, nerfing caw blade by banning Stoneforge Mystic and Jace, Architect of Thought, didn't slow it down much at all. Frost Titan and Sun Titan still locked an opponent down while replenishing our board. Primeval Titan into Valakut still ran rampant. Battlecry did add some fun extra tempo options for other deck archetypes, but the meta remained stagnant for a whole extra year. Sit down at the table, and it's a 50/50 chance that they're playing Caw blade or Valakut. Well, 48/48. With that buffer being for Kiki Jiki Splinter Twin and Liquimetal coating and Manic Vandal land destruction.

The player (McCurcher) was such a poor sport, he was *the* magic the gathering player (the stereotype.) Allergic to deodorant, snarky, know-it-all, and all of that is forgivable, but he was also a very toxic poor sport, sore loser and ungracious victor. - He was also a better player than me in general, and he could afford the sideboard. In my one loss I went 1-2. He went undefeated, made my tiebreakers the best, I squeak into top eight. Top 8 blows by, I stopmed on my opponent, he's playing Caw blade, I managed to midrange myself into a win. Going into top 4 and who should be my opponent, but a smug, and over confident McCurcher who was undefeated as of yet. - Game one is a snap keep and I'm on the draw. I had every answer, and McCurcher got flooded out. I asked if he wanted to board in, since he had boarded in our first round. He tells me "I know what you have, I don't need to." Or something to that effect. He decided not to board and again, I drew the nuts. This wasn't just the nuts, it's was the shaft and pelvis too. He had a good hand, decent draws, it was only the draw, the heart of the cards that saw me through to victory. I reached across the table "g.g." He glares at me with one of the creepiest faces I've ever seen (reminds me of when Palpatine reveals he's a sith) he doesn't even put his deck in the box, he throws it all loose into his bag. Storms out the door, and tries to slam one of those hydraulic glass doors they have on stores. Drops his bag, mess everywhere. Thanks for reminding me of my greatest magic victory. - This was the week of rotation, it was the absolute last chance to play Valakut as Standard.
I’m a huge fan which is why I was kind of disappointed by the Kamikoto ad. They’re proven to be a scam and not worth you money at all. Shadiversity has a great video on them. Don’t buy them! I would just ask you to do your research on ad deals like this in the future. Great video, just disappointed by the ad.
I’d like to preface this with I have no issue with TH-camrs doing their own ad segments but I would like to say you should definitely avoid kamikoto knives. I would go so far as to call them a scam. They do their best to hide what steel they use but it is a very low grade steel that cannot hold an edge very long. Make that money my dude, but I would avoid this sponsor in the future.

I'd say Ashnod's Battle Gear is the first attempt at equipment. You can even keep it "equipped" to save on activation costs!

Crown combos well with Ashnod's Altar OR Phyrexian Altar, as either one will refund you the equip cost. Just add tokens!

permanent enchantment debuffs would probably still break it. Particularly with the recent 1 mana Kaya enchantment, which reanimates automatically.
I LOVE the way Kaya's Ghostform is worded. The fact that creature hits the grave then comes back is relevant in so many situations.

It's a butchered version of the Clamp. Too expensive to cast, too expensive (or limited) to equip, harder to fetch.

I remember right before kah-blade, we had quest for the holy relic, turn two lock out if you had the nuts hand. Pretty decent win rate. And before that I was playing Valakut and Primeval Titan. God damn, good times.
They really should have removed Titans from the next core set, gently nudging us to play the praetors. As it stood, nerfing caw blade by banning Stoneforge Mystic and Jace, Architect of Thought, didn't slow it down much at all.
Frost Titan and Sun Titan still locked an opponent down while replenishing our board.
Primeval Titan into Valakut still ran rampant.
Battlecry did add some fun extra tempo options for other deck archetypes, but the meta remained stagnant for a whole extra year.
Sit down at the table, and it's a 50/50 chance that they're playing Caw blade or Valakut. Well, 48/48. With that buffer being for Kiki Jiki Splinter Twin and Liquimetal coating and Manic Vandal land destruction.

I was 3-1 going into top 8, my loss was the mirror. The player (McCurcher) was such a poor sport, he was *the* magic the gathering player (the stereotype.) Allergic to deodorant, snarky, know-it-all, and all of that is forgivable, but he was also a very toxic poor sport, sore loser and ungracious victor.

He was also a better player than me in general, and he could afford the sideboard. In my one loss I went 1-2. He went undefeated, made my tiebreakers the best, I squeak into top eight. Top 8 blows by, I stopmed on my opponent, he's playing Caw blade, I managed to midrange myself into a win.
Going into top 4 and who should be my opponent, but a smug, and over confident McCurcher who was undefeated as of yet.

Game one is a snap keep and I'm on the draw. I had every answer, and McCurcher got flooded out. I asked if he wanted to board in, since he had boarded in our first round.
He tells me "I know what you have, I don't need to." Or something to that effect.
He decided not to board and again, I drew the nuts. This wasn't just the nuts, it's was the shaft and pelvis too. He had a good hand, decent draws, it was only the draw, the heart of the cards that saw me through to victory.
I reached across the table "g.g."
He glares at me with one of the creepiest faces I've ever seen (reminds me of when Palpatine reveals he's a sith) he doesn't even put his deck in the box, he throws it all loose into his bag. Storms out the door, and tries to slam one of those hydraulic glass doors they have on stores. Drops his bag, mess everywhere. Thanks for reminding me of my greatest magic victory.

I’m a huge fan which is why I was kind of disappointed by the Kamikoto ad. They’re proven to be a scam and not worth you money at all. Shadiversity has a great video on them. Don’t buy them! I would just ask you to do your research on ad deals like this in the future. Great video, just disappointed by the ad.
All this video has done is remind me why I don't play Modern or Standard anymore.

Fair warning about Kamikoto...the steel they use is garbage. Would not recommend.
Their japanese steel is just normal spring steel lmao. Not much different from a normal 10 dollar kitchen knife.
I’d like to preface this with I have no issue with TH-camrs doing their own ad segments but I would like to say you should definitely avoid kamikoto knives. I would go so far as to call them a scam. They do their best to hide what steel they use but it is a very low grade steel that cannot hold an edge very long. Make that money my dude, but I would avoid this sponsor in the future.
Actually with a quick check shadiversity has done his own review if you would like the word of someone far more knowledgeable than myself on knife quality
