I had a ‘65, ‘66 and a ‘67. It’s all true. I drove the 66 from Michigan to Ca. I got 50 mpg following trucks.

I didn’t realize they were so slow, a friend had a VW Van it had to be even slower, but we didn’t notice back then. Man they were everywhere and that sound.

You could tune the engine and put a turbo on them. Two guys and 12 pack, you could put a new engine in in 2-3 hours.

@@ffjsb we did see a lot of people souping them up in Southern West Virginia, but I remember I think it was called super VW magazine that always showed the best builds!

Had a bug and a Chevy Metro. The Metro came up in the world..... they put a bow tie on it. Almost hit a deer with it.

I have a smartcar ... drove through a little herd of deer standing on the highway - they looked at my car like "... I dunno, what is it?" ... I was the one with the deer in the headlight look - "please don't hit my car!" ....... they still were standing there when I looked in the rear view mirror ... I've never been so insulted by nature in my life! .....

Actually they weren't bad. Great engines, if you put a turbo on it.
