It’s called mirror glaze because it’s a technique used in pastry making. The difference being with pastry/cakes the glaze includes gelatin which gives the cake a mirror like shine. Same technique, different mediums.
I have a question about safety. Is it the lye that makes it necessary to use gloves and goggles? Does mixing it with the other ingredients change the chemical properties and render the soap safe to use?
Yes, it’s the lye. By its self it’s very caustic, and can cause chemical burns. Mixing it with the oils causes a reaction called “saponification,” where the oils and lye react to make soap. Most soapers calculate their recipes so that they have extra oils, which is called a super fat.
I’ll add that saponification can take up to three days to finish, but after that the soap is usable. Most soapers let their soaps cute for a minimum of 4 weeks because the longer the cure, the harder the bar of soap, so the longer they last
Leonie Williams I went back and steamed them to help with the shininess, but I think a thin layer of clear mp could really help boost the shine. You’d just want to make sure the cp is completely cured so it doesn’t try to separate from the mp, and take into account humidity and all that. I’m in Louisiana and even low sweat mp can sweat badly down here lol.
With this first batch there was. I wasn’t sure quite how much glaze I needed so I overestimated. Although, nothing went to waste as I saved the overflow to roll into balls for a separate batch.
Avery, I noticed you micas are liquid when you pour them, how did you prepare them to be able to do that? I really enjoyed you video. Great ideas! Thank you.
Ronda Jones I mix them with a little bit of oil, usually sunflower oil so that it incorporates easier. It seems if I add them straight to my batch dry I either have to stick blend to get them really incorporated or I have little splotches in the final product. Thank you so much for watching!
Noel Youngblood lol I’ve had other people ask that too! I plan to take photos of the underside and of one cut through the middle so you can see the interior!
Scarlett Moon the “cakes” were my small batch size using 51 oz of soap batter, and I made the same size batch for the glaze since this was my first time trying it and I wasn’t sure how much I would need lol. I really could have used 1/3 of that for the glaze and had plenty. I saved my excess though, so it didn’t go to waste!
Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner! Yes, lye can burn skin and even when it’s mixed with the oils it can still cause a bad chemical burn until the saponification process is complete which can take up to 3 days. It’s always best to wear gloves and eye protection to make sure you don’t get any accidental splashes.
The underside has a thin rim of green on the outside, and then the center is solid white. I originally intended to make the “cakes” swirled so the bottom would be interesting than plain white, but my fragrance accelerating derailed that plan lol. If you check the blog post on my website I have a photo of the underside right before I trimmed the drips off.
Love your video, though it's not for me to attempt in the near future. Gosh, some comments can be so harsh, why don't they post their own perfect videos.
Happy & Healthy Living with ALO Wellness thank you so much for watching! I use iMovie to edit and add comments. It’s pretty handy! I just downloaded a new app so that I can film with my phone up and down instead of sideways, but I’m thinking I prefer the way I’ve been doing it lol.
Line Heuston-Hanley it is! I used the same size batch, but really I could have halved the size at least. My fragrance caused my first batch to accelerate, which definitely wasn’t the plan lol, so I switched to a different fragrance that I felt blended well with my original choice.
I used 51 oz for the glaze, which is the same as my batch size for the “cake” portion. I wanted to leave myself plenty of glaze in case of error lol, but I could have halved that amount and still had plenty. I poured my unused portion of glaze into my round 12 cavity mold and had 4 cavities fully filled and one cavity halfway filled.
Wow, that was a wonderful video. I have one question though. Were your soaps propped on anything when you were pouring? And if so, what? Ok so it was 2 questions lol. Thank you for posting this!
Misty Oaks Soaps thank you for watching it! I did elevate them, I used plastic condiment cups. I didn’t want anything too tall, because if I needed to move the tray I was afraid they’d fall over lol. The condiment cups were the perfect size to fit under the soaps, small enough they all fit, but big enough to be stable.
Sharon White most of the time mine is fairly matte, but you can bring out the shine by steaming, rinsing, or dunking your soap. Ravensong soap on instagram has a few short videos showing how they rinse their soaps under running water while in the mold. I believe it’s Sorcery Soap that dunks hers in a bowl of water then leaves them to dry. Many people steam using their regular iron or a clothing steamer. Just hold your iron at least 3 inches or so away and make several passes over your soaps. Allow them to dry completely before you flip them over to steam the other side.
Lmao, my first thought was "oh no, she's not wearing gloves" and then you captioned that. That's okay, I made soap once with sunglasses on and didn't realize it til I was almost through???

Sherry Gros I usually have a pretty good stash, but my husband grabbed my last pair! I usually catch myself when I’ve started to mix my lye water and oils lol
Not a criticism. Your soap is lovely. I'm just wondering why you wouldn't just do the in the pot swirl directly in the mould for the whole soap instead of doing it as an extra step? I'm sure there is a reason and I'm just curious. Yes, I know I'm being very apologetic asking this but I know there's so much hate on TH-cam that I am careful not to sound like I'm being critical!
Kelley Spartiatis you are totally fine asking! I’m usually the same way lol. This was more of a “can I?” type project. Can I do a method only done in cake making? Also, I have more control over the pattern the “glaze” makes this way. I originally intended the interior “cake” to be an in the pot swirl, so that as the outer layer wore away there would be a pretty interior, but my fragrance riced and accelerated to the point it wasn’t possible lol. I’ll be taking photos of one of the cakes that I cut through the middle either today or tomorrow and posting on my Instagram to show the interior and you’ll see what I mean.
@@averygreysoapery6476 what's your instagram name. I love seeing other people's soap. I'm making zombie eyeball soaps today for Halloween. I'm very late!
Kelley Spartiatis I’m not even going to get Halloween soaps made 😂, I procrastinated too long lol. You can find me under @averygreysoapery on insta! Zombie eyeball soaps sound so cool!
@@averygreysoapery6476 I will follow you. Wouldn't you bother using melt and pour? I made some spider soap in clear melt and pour. Yeah, I know it's not really soap but I have made translucent soap only once. It turned out lovely but it cost a fortune!
Kelley Spartiatis I’d love to make translucent soap, but I’m afraid it would cost too much lol! Actually euphoria soapworks did a version of this where she used M&P to glaze her CP cakes. It was super cute! Sorcery Soap uses a very thin layer of M&P sometimes to seal her soap cookies, I’ve thought about trying that to give it a shinier look, more of a true mirror glaze.
You didn't give any measurements.. Didn't say all what you were pouring in the batch. Would have been nice to have talked...told us your measurements and all the oils...i see mixing...pouring...just saying
Thanks for getting back to me! This helps me for future videos! This video was just to show the technique, and to be a companion to the written tutorial where I give the recipe, ingredients, and step by step how to. I wanted to help those that are more visual learners, since it can be hard to get what someone means just from writing. I think I have the link to the written tutorial in the description of the video, but I’m going to double check to make sure.
Evian I haven’t the slightest idea who Mr Tumble is, but you’re welcome to lower your volume so you don’t hear any music. People complain when I have no music, people complain when I have it, people complain when I talk through the videos, people complain when I don’t. In short, people complain no matter what and I’m not going to appeal to everyone. And that’s perfectly ok. I don’t have to. My value isn’t based on the comment of a stranger on the internet who doesn’t know me. Terrific techniques and color combination, did you add any fragrance?

Yes, lye can burn skin and even when it’s mixed with the oils it can still cause a bad chemical burn until the saponification process is complete which can take up to 3 days. It’s always best to wear gloves and eye protection to make sure you don’t get any accidental splashes.

Sherry Gros I usually have a pretty good stash, but my husband grabbed my last pair! I usually catch myself when I’ve started to mix my lye water and oils lol
nice
beautiful
Hi, how can i find on facebook?
cool, they look like matcha macarons :)

Beutiful
The music drives me nuts! I thought the video was for adults. I was disappointed not to see Mr Tumble!
And just so your ears aren’t assaulted in future videos, most of them will have music at least during part of the video. Have a wonderful day!
