The sheer brutality of these battles that actually took place like this was intense and full of energy.
Men taking full blows against limbs and exposed heads, raging barbarity that only defines animalistic behavior to kill the other side. Wars fought like this, face to face, was a sight to see and experience for sure, unlike today. truly heart stopping and shocking if we look back on it. One can only imagine what frenzy Teutoburg and Cannae looked like, up close or at a distance.
A thing to behold this is, we definitely need more of these reenactments. Bravo to them 👏 🙌

Ferocious mercenaires and warriors from all brute nations, bent on merciless destruction, conquest. Your emperor is pleased to give you the barbarian horde!
    That was sweet.

I saw the recording of conference where was discussed the Roman martial art. From this experience I don't see Roman warriors on this video, but just guys in costumes of Romans.

The thing that often comes with large scale reenactments in general is the difficulty of being coordinated with many different groups. When it comes to coreographed combat, you see different schools of thought from these groups, some having an actual martial art background, others more engrained in theater, while others still simply recreating the visuals.
I've personally participated as a figurant in this spectacle, and i've seen how difficult it was for the organizers, as well as every participant, to make these large battles into a believable scenario, we'd create improvised skits on the go, with a schematic combat in mind so that we'd make a decent duel without sacrificing safety. it turned out pretty well from how the general public reacted.
In other reenactment scenarios i've seen much worse: in XVI century events i've seen people who work in real martial and theatrical context (Achille Marozzo or the Bande Nere groups) face with people who barely knew how to hold steel swords, unsharpened but dangerous nontheless, and it can quickly become an atrocious scene with overly safe moves at a great cost for the scenery, or with people being sent to hospitals.
This event forgoes all that, since it's a recreation of the Arena games, not the battles themselves. Therefore, since we have pretty detailed sources regarding gladiatorial participants, and these were not always trained soldiers but mostly professional champions and in many cases convicts, it is not too shabby of a performance. Certainly one of the best in its kind, and in the entire reenactment world. Try to organize 300-350 figurants in an arena so that they never make one scenic mistake!
As it's often said in theatre, the show must go on, and a spectacle that does its job without being on the actor's nerves is better that one that doesn't.
Try contacting the organizers! They still have some spots open until this year's event in may 2024, perhaps you can bring the change you're so fond of bringing!

@2:45 to the right , hope that injured legionary was part of the script ?1 lol

Doubt it was. That injury looked genuine.

@@Ianassa91 From bitter experience, doing combat rolls when wearing a helmet only works safely if you roll across the shoulders, rather than over your head. You tend to get a wrenching effect otherwise from the extra weight on your neck. I'd say that the foot injury was faked for the scene, but his being a little stunned after the roll is genuine. ;)

Don't worry, a fellow Gaul received a blow to the face from a germanic auxiliary that wasn't part of the script, these "happy" accidents occur all the time!

Being an actual participant of the reenactment, i can assure you a group of people dressed up as Asterix's village came and greeted us oustide the Arena during one of the breaks, they were so kind to make us drink their magic potion! (in the form of apple juice)

Sanno una sega i Francesi, i Franchi erano ancora delle tribù divise nell'odierna Westfalia, semmai i Galli avranno avuto da piangere!
