I am inclined to agree that experience with typical capitalist systems teaches us that a stronger middle class tends to be anathema to capitalism; it tends to successfully challenge the ruling class (the aristocracy) effectively and hold it to account and hence it tends to be a thorn in the flesh of the aristocrats. That is why in political system that is devoid of democratic principles, the tendency is to fear and therefore suppress the middle class.
This was true when media was catering to them .. now it's catering or in fact being created by lower classes .. this has led to non importance of middle. The elite have started catering to lower classes and setting narratives for them. The space for intellectual discussion is shrinking fast.
