I have always used that feature because the software can't tell that the camera isn't zooming. Seems to always give me better results. That being said, you are likely correct in your statement.

I don't have Mocha Pro at the moment. Also, I have never done camera solving in Premiere Pro. Results are stronger in after effects.
I think that the “Zoom lens” checkbox is for footage with actual zoom action, not when you use a zoom lens at a fixed focal range.
