It's great to know that the fanbase is giving Pokémon Horizons a fair chance but I can respect that some people are not ready to let go of Ash Ketchum as the main protagonist It still kind of hurts for someone like me who was born in the 90s and grew up right alongside the whole franchise.
My problem with Ash's send off is that is was the worst ending for any beloved character ever. He didn't take on the battle frontier, didn't get his old companions until he wons the world championship, and they didn't give him the mythicals and legendaries he rightfully deserved. Hell, they didn't even give us a rematch between Alan and Tobias which would have been heat. The series focused on Go and chlore who were both terrible boring uninteresting chracters. I would have prefered a ash traveling with old companions using his old pokemon challenging battle frontiers and black or white tower in unova and maybe battle chateau in kalos and at the end PWC. Masters would have made him a pokemon master and that would have been that instead they were afraid to close the chapter on ash's story properly. I hate that I'm ok with ash's story ending I wish they would have sent him off properly with a good fairwell.
My theory is that that sort of thing always happened because it was the trade-off. In Once Upon A Time, Rumplestiltskin loved to say “all magic comes with a price.” In Pokémon, Ash was affected by Ho-Oh’s magic making him perpetually 10 until he could reach his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master. So if we apply Rumple’s logic, though from a totally different story universe, then it makes sense why Ash forgot literally all of his accumulated wisdom every time he moved to a new region. The fact it also affects Pikachu can only mean that Ho-Oh’s magic fell on Pikachu as well, which makes perfect sense given how close Ash and Pikachu are and the fact Pikachu wasn’t in his Pokéball.
@@JoseRafaelJarlosIn Black and White, Ash’s Pikachu, that you’d think would be level 100 by that point, loses to a level 5 Snivy just because he couldn’t use electric attacks. Still had iron tail and quick attack, but still lost. To a level 5 Snivy.
It's the same problem as the games, the anime was made to promote the games, so the way it was done was simple, they didn't think well about the logic or how to conduct the story, and the world evolved very quickly, the technology, the way of scripting stories and so on, so the anime became obsolete over time, and from Unova onwards it became messy, a lot of personality inconsistency, so it was time to innovate, both in game with Legend of Arceus and Violet and Scarlet and the anime with Horizons The problem however, is that after so much time, you can imagine how good the anime could really have been with Ash and the ending wasn't that satisfying, because Journeys had a huge wasted potential, so many old characters that didn't appear, reunions that didn't happen, old Pokémon that weren't used, so even with Ash's victory, it ended with a feeling of incompleteness, as if something was still missing.
@@UnstealleonIs this supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing? Even though I like these two series, they have so many inconsistencies and plot holes that it becomes crazy.
@@MasterofChaldea015ya he is right in the sense that good storytelling has some quite moments. But i don't know anyone who is watching pokemon for the plot really. I think some people would be unhappy with any form of change good or bad. And you can't really blame them for it. Like it or not, but you would be lucky to even make half of your fanbase happy with a dramatic change like this. That's just a fact or more accurately a theory.
I have no problem with the writing and the characters in the new pokemon. My concern about the new series is the lackluster pokemon battle and the sparse pokemon catching. Most battles don't finish or there is no definitive winner. While in the catching part, most of the important character are already satisfied with their partner pokemon and seems to lack the behavior of wanting to catch more. Lastly, I have no real problem with some wild pokemon living in their flying ship, but it kind of becomes a disservice for them when new generation pokemon are already there making their introduction not as impactful. Pokemon heavily revolves on those 2 core mechanics, and when those two things are not prominently shown, it becomes obvious and it feels like something is missing or incomplete.
Tbh Liko is a pretty good successor to Ash, She has an actual arc Ash has always been a static character, I mean he really couldn’t be anything else sure he changed his attitude towards battling during the first two seasons but after that since he had to reset at every region he also had to reset his character so after awhile he stopped changing to much (except aloha, that was more of a Flanderizatuon of the ash character then an arc, turning him into a more chill dumb character) But Liko, Liko had more of an arc in 3 episodes than ash has had in 15 years. And Is just a really likable character.
When I say reset I mean, Start over again, like in the Hoenn theme song, “take a step and I am on my way, gonna start all over again”. Ash starts again fresh each Show with a new team he earns. It’s very hard to really write a character with that set up after awhile, sure he can win the championship, or the Trainers tournament, but like at the end of the series you know he is off to a new region and he is not taking his Op Pokémon, he is going to catch some weak Pokémon in the next region. It’s just kinda formulaic at this point even though i enjoy it.
@EWOODJ he may have had a soft reset but let's be real he been acting like that in practically every region he went to even before unova starting from scratch and losing to beginners
Speaking of her being a good successor, I have a very gyneric and obvious theory. She’s the secret child of Ash and Serena, or Ash and Donn. She has his jet-black hair and their blue eyes.
Introversion simply means you feel energized when you’re alone, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re “anxious” or “shy.” You can be an extrovert, but also shy. Most people mistake introversion as shyness, when it’s really feeling more energized alone than with people.
Yeah he makes it sound like introverts are oppressed and are pitiable so they deserve some attention even though most characters consciously choose not to be in the spotlight, You know because they are introverts. He was not cooking with that introversion stuff.
What if Ash won his first League in Season 1? And if new protagonists replaced him sooner every Season? Starting with Ethan for Season 2's Johto League Arc. And if Pokemon movies had different protagonists not based on game counterparts(like Gou & Koharu in Movie 1 and Liko & Roy in Movie 2)? While all written by Shudo Takeshi(who wanted Ash gone sooner if it weren't for those meddling kids(executives)).
Not sure the anime would’ve been as successful, remember what happened when they tried to replace Brock? the fans weren’t having it, now imagine if they tried that with Ash. Really the earliest you could’ve replaced Ash would be after Johto, even then it would’ve been risky and they would’ve had to keep some familiar faces to make it work.
@@Andrew-Bastin Nope, just replace Ash after Kanto. To follow closely with the games. As Red got replaced by Gold after Gen 1. And Ash was originally meant to be like Red. Now imagine seeing Ash returned as a final boss in Ethan's final episode on Mt. Silver. Who would've won that battle?
@@tlst94 Red is a player self-insert with no personally, Ash is a developed character with established goals and motivations, they’re not comparable. If they had tried to replace Ash that early the anime wouldn’t have been as successful. Also a slight correction, Ash wasn’t originally going to be replaced after Kanto, the anime was originally going to just end, there was no plan for a standalone Johto series, the success of the initial season spurred the show runners to continue but replacing Ash was never on the table, he and pikachu were the faces of Pokemon.
I really like liko a lot,I relate to her a lot. Im a huge introvert, not saying I don't like being around others, it's just that I don't like being around HUGE groups of people
When I first watched Horizons, I was actually enthralled with Liko's character. I could immediately tell she was completely different from Ash but in a very interesting way. For example, I pose a question. Has Ash ever really thought to himself. Ash has talked to himself before but I can't think of times where he's been in his own mind. Meanwhile Liko is constantly thinking to herself about a given situation or character. She even narorates. That's such a simple change that really distinguishes them already not to mention how they operate and handle different things. I feel like the best part is that Liko doesn't just feel like Ash's antithesis, she feels like her own character who shares some traits but lacks others. Obviously Ash isn't the easiest character to follow up on. Not only does his tenier on the franchise span across decades but he also shows off the thing Pokemon is known for about as much as catching, battling better than I think anyone ever will. For a battle, we could always expect Ash to do something that shouldn't make any sense but (most of the time) is super cool. Not only is Horizons not really battle focused, I don't think a character like Liko is going to tell Sprigatito to stick it's tail in the ground and rapidly shake its body like a jack hammer to ensure damage to their opponent on impact. That being said, the fact that Liko is working with what could be seen as a disadvantage and still being enjoyable to me is an admirable feat and from what I've seen of Horizons (15 episodes as of the making of this comment) I haven't ever questioned her protagonist status and have actively enjoyed her. I can't wait to see more of what she's about when I finally get back to watching the series.
Liko thinking instead of Ash not ever thinking is actually an opposite that I completely missed. I just thought "Oh, Liko is a main character who, when she thinks, we can hear her thoughts! Finally! Plus she's a bit relatable,"
The worst thing for me was when the series first came out and a lot of guys were saying they would drop the series just because Liko is female. It makes little sense to me because what does being a boy or a girl have to do with being a trainer? The trainers power is based on their pokemon, not their own strength. I feel like the story and the type of character the trainer is would be what matters in Pokemon, not their gender. For a long time these guys made me feel awkward watching this, but I did finally try it, and enjoyed it.
The battles and new mons are more underwhelming than the protagonist. And the the "protagonist team" usually had a good balance. Early on. Reasonable Responsible Brock Cilian and bubbly unsure May Max Misty and Dawn. That kind if chemistry was perfect... That's how you're not overly reliant on one chracter replacing ash instead you need a whole cast that is better than or atleast equal to tge top "teams"
No sexist, but in anime a lot of people don’t like female protagonists in action anime or those sort of anime, an ash have been the main character for over 2 decade now. So it a weird change of pace for alot of people. Just imagine if one piece, bleach, dbz, or Naruto MC was a female, alot of people would dislike it. And example is inuyasha, the sequal involved the main characters daughter and had horrible review
@@wwekings9505 That's just not true, you just named the most popular iconic old amines as examples. You replace any OG beloved established character regardless of gender from a popular show or movie it's never going to be better than the original character, people have already connected to them. Yet there are female protagonists in anime that you dint say and if they replace them with a male character people would also not like that as it replaces an established OG. People don't like Boruto for that reason, but sexism only works one way in society apparently. God if Boruto was a girl i can only imagine all the awful feminists spouting BS sexism and playing that sexist card constantly in every comment section like this original one. Ironically spreading into comment section where no one is being sexist like this one. Yet the character would still be disliked exactly the same way bit if girl than everyone's misogynist asshole apparently.
Just like when i watch the first episode of ash and movie i was just amere younger than 10 years old now i had family and responsibility to my worker…oh fuck the memory
same i have been watching ash since 10 and now im 14 so im not really aure im gonna watch pokemon horrizons because im so used to ash and like im sooo sad ash is not gonna be there so yeah but i hope he comes back ASAP
Ash was special not just because we spent our lives with him but ultimately because he was the first adaptation of RED from the original games, only with a much different personality and goals but he was connected to that very first game that started in Pallet Town, the playable character is one reason why i think a lot of people could see themselves through him
I only want to see Ash all grown up tbh. I love the idea of him settling down and being a happy adult man instead of 10. I am obviously excited for the new series, though.
@@sokaize It’s funny to me how characters like Dora have aged more than Ash within her media, and her character debute is way younger than ash, yet now she’s as of now, she’s a high schooler in her latest released media. Even before that she was still aged up in her other series. Dora will probaby be an old lady before they make ash an adult 😂.
This video gave me a lot to think about and I fully agree with the statements made. Pokémon needed to evolve. Ash and Pikachu have been stale and the same for a big while. His companions and rivals were more interesting. Part of me wishes Liko continues in Gen 10 with Sprigs as her "Johto Bulbasaur". Great work as always, Ginger.
I think there's potential for that happening, honestly. I can't imagine that when Gen 10 comes, they'll do something else with the animé. Liko, Roy, and Dot have a lot of to give and plenty of room for growth, and they don't even have full teams either. I could totally see them going to [insert Gen 10 region here] and exploring it and getting some new Pokémon there. I really hope that's where the animé will go.
I like her way more than ash to be honest, also Horizons comes as a breath of fresh hair, everyone has different goals and the art and animation is really good, also I love the fact that the real protagonist starts with pikachu and charizard, I missed that big ass lizard for A LONG TIME, we only saw him as fanservice from time to time and if someone had one it was an antagonist or a side character so he wasnt shown much, but now he's part of the main cast again and that's awesome.
Hmm...you don't really explain why the anime HAD to replace Ash with Liko, or even the actual criticisms addressed toward her character. Sure, I agree with the sentiment that you can always have an introverted female protagonist, but the problem comes with how that conflicts with what Pokemon is as a series. As you've already stated in 6:20 the world of Pokemon favors extroverts...although that's not necessarily the case, you were on the right track. There are plenty of introverted characters in the world of Pokemon who are definitely skilled trainers in their own right, just look at Kieran from the Scarlet and Violet DLC, so it's not a matter of "extroverted vs introverted". Rather, what *really* matters is whether the character is active or reactive. Do their actions influence the world around them? Or does the world around them influence their actions? Every single successful Pokemon Trainer, be it extroverted or introverted, all share the fact that they're all active characters. They all have a goal they want to achieve, and they work towards that goal. That's what it means to be a Pokemon Trainer. Nothing in the world is forcing them down this path, they simple choose it themselves. But Liko is not this. She is not an active character, as she reacts to everything that happens to her in the plot, rather than having the plot react to her actions. And because of this, and what kind of world Pokemon is like, it makes Liko a very boring protagonist. You can write Liko as relatable as you want her to be, but if she fails to actually be an engaging protagonist that embodies the core ideals and themes of the series, then she fundamentally fails as a protagonist. *This* is the reason why people want Ash back, or a character like Ash back (aside from all the ash puritans who hate anything non-Ash as a protagonist), because Ash was an active character who pushed the plot forward through *his* own dreams and desires, rather than waiting for the plot to happen to him. Also, it kinda goes against the whole theme of the series where "anyone can become a great pokemon trainer and go on these adventures" when you have the entire series revolve around why the protagonist is very special and she has this special pendant with a special legendary Pokemon inside that has been passed down her family for generations and she's actually connected to this legendary ancient Pokemon Trainer and...yeah.
same here, please I don't want critizim like this to seem like girl hate, or interoverte hate. if we could follow someone like nemona I would prefer that. even the case for someone like Lana an introvert maybe. Just not anything that might bring back Koharu ptsd. girl who was given all the Eevee options and chose to go 'nah fam, imma sit on this for a couple years to decide'.
@@spinotikus1518 unusual about what? having a special pendant with them that has a legendary pokemon locked inside of it and is a descendant of this legendary pokemon trainer who used to own a shiny legendary?
Thank you!! This video bugged me Bec he just went on and on about how liko is an introvert etc but ginger never explains WHY liko is an engaging protagonist for her series You hit the nail on the head. She is reactive. She needed Millie to convince her to catch a new Mon, she always needs friede to rescue her or cap, alot of the stuff with explorers and pendant happen TO her than her actually doing something etc and I swear people see the world "relatable" and automatically think it means good writing. It would be relatable if liko laid in bed all day and used her phone but no one wants to watch that shit
I feel that both the epic Mickey version of mickey mouse avatar aang and finn the human(middle to late adventure time) are great examples of introvert characters in animation
Now you've got me wanting to replay Epic Mickey! I actually considered mentioning Finn in the video, as he definitely started to show more signs of introversion as the show went on, which was pretty interesting
Firstly the original pokemon show was losing interest of fans in japan that watch tv and secondly the writers were really struggling how to further develop Ash character for many generations. The original pokemon anime writer never intended for him to be the main star for this long and even wanted to move to new protagonists with each generation, but unfortunately this vision was declined. This show really does a great job by learning the mistakes of the last one and gave us a cast of really well written characters. Ps. Eureka Seven fans are really happy with this show.
ngl me personally i was kinda upset when i found out that ash wouldnt be in pokemon horizons BUT after i watched an episode or three i completely changed my mind, i like liko too much shes definitely my fave character in the whole pokemon series now
Komi Can't Communicate is my favorite work of art because I see myself in Komi. We both face Social Anxiety and it's beautiful to see her overcome it. Thank you for mentioning it.
A Komi fan! I'm not shy or even have anxiety problems but I also see myself in her, somehow. And I really love her development through the story and the change of the artstyle. Oda is dope at artstyle, also his writing characters personalities is great! Maybe it's not perfect as a story but really enjoyable and cute, I don't want this to finish... but we know that the goal is closer so the ending is soon to come. It's already 4 years that I'm reading this story and I will still do it to the end, I hope Oda will do another story after Komi... he needs more appreciation as an author.
My father is introverted just like I am. He was always very good at group events, though. Naturally, I noticed from a young age, but it wasn't until this 4th of July that I realized how hard it is to put on a smile and continue a conversation. It's like the more natural you are, the more burden you feel. If you're bad at faking it, you tend to get angry at simple questions. I've always been in the middle ground, but this 4th of july, I actually held a conversation and forced an actual natural laugh, and that shit took at least 5 years off my lifespan. Also, I took piano in high school and developed an addiction to cracking my knuckles to releavee hand cramps and give my hands some time to breath due to the sweat. Now whenever I'm in a stressful situation and my hands sweat I naturally go to crack my knuckles and my mother says that it's a sign of social anxiety when it isn't. I have no problem talking to like minded individuals and would love to go out and do things with friends. It's just meeting new people that I don't like puts me in a nervous situation and my hands get sweaty. I did this before I went to go see my father in the hospital and when my boss called me into the office. It's literally just a bad habit that people think is social anxiety
You know what I noticed? In the past years, protagonist groups have been more mixed, including female characters insteed of pure boys groups. However, in the vast majority of these cases, the male characters are still the leaders of the group. If a girl is the leader, then it's mostly because it is a pure girls group. What I have seen in only very little stories, printed and visual, is a mixed team of protagonists with a female protagonist as it's leader.
Soul Eater has Maka as the group leader although I admit its rare for a main protagonist girl to lead boys. Usually a female leader is just the Boss Lady rather than the main protagonist when groups are that way. Although to be fair 2-4 Boys & 1 Girl has been common for teams for a long time.
You are right, but in recent years things have been changing. The biggest examples I can think of in cartoons are Gravity Falls, Kimpossible, Legend of Korra, and Miraculous Ladybug. I don't want to diss male characters for being the lead, since sometimes that's just how their character tends to be. When I think of Teen Titans or the original Avatar The Last Airbender, they have a diverse cast with strong personalities and motivations, and it would be weird if their respective "leaders" weren't Robin and Aang.
@@fantasan8540 Honestly I'd argue Katara is more the leader, as she's the level headed focused one. Aang turns that way later on, but in the early episodes he was just having fun.
It was really surprising to see how much thought and care went into designing Liko as a character. The pokemon anime was especially infamous for playing it safe and repeat old habits (at least until Sun and Moon for the most part) so seeing so many different approaches in Horizons pay off so well definitely hooked me much faster than anticipated. There will surely be a time for cameos and references of the old run but for now I'm just really enjoying this new take on the anime. Letting Ash go wasn't easy, many people rightfully weren't ready for it yet, but in my opinion it was much needed. Idk how much time we'll spend with the Horizon cast but, considering the pace of the show, I'm convinced that hopefully they will stick around long enough to become a core aspect of the franchise.
"The pokemon anime was especially infamous for playing it safe and repeat old habits" Since when is driving fans to the brink of a nervous breakdown a safe bet 🤔
@@spinotikus1518 she/he means that the conduction of the fights, scenes, and over-all romance/friendship, Isn't far too different then the other pokemon shows, (Except sun & moon) In-fact, we could also call It being repetitive, ashs' age not changing, somehow all of his pokemon disappear other than pikachu and all of his friends' he made on the way disappear the next show, even his love interest, but for Liko, It wasn't the same, we cannot judge right now since the series hasn't ended yet, but for now It's taking an amazing path, changing the story, changing the storyline, but I hope they add a new mythical pokemon, native to the paldea region, since right now there Isn't any new pokemon native to this show (paldea regional show) and they might Introduce It later on, but for now I'm incredibly excited to see the Upcoming updates on the anime and how It progresses.
I recently watched the first 2 episodes English dub episodes of the new Pokémon series and I have to admit it's ok, but it disappointing the school has been abandoned. If your going to immediately abandoned it why set it up along with a roommate for the protagonist.
Maybe because later we see her doing lessons on her rotomphone, so she didn't really abandoned it... she still follow lessons to know more about the pokemon world.
The school is to keep showing off Anne and her growth because she will be important to the plot later and liko parents when to the school so we could get some flashbacks of that. Another reason is since SM they have been making sure kids go to school maybe it’s a message to kids to stay in school but yeah I would love for the schools to be more important to the plot and not just mostly to show Anne.
Liko and Roy are going to school again soon -- in Paldea, that is, and yes, Nemona will be there, as well as the Elite Four, including Larry. Don't bother with the dub, IMO -- it'll probably be a whole year before the dub actually gets to where the original is at right now. IMO the animé did right to not start off with a school arc right away -- Liko & Sprigatito wouldn't have grown as much as characters if they were at school rather than travelling with Friede & co.
@@GPrinceps yeah but they made liko school important it’s where her parents went and Anne is important as well they keep bringing her back and they are making a correlation between Anne and amethio they keep coming back and disappearing at the same time. I wouldn’t be surprised if Anne joins them at the paldea school because we know the explorers admins are going to be going to the paldea school as well. They will go back to liko school at sometime and it probably holds a important plot piece as well since liko family is from kanto before they moved.
I've been watching Pokémon since it started back in 1999. I was 7 years old back then. I dropped off watching the anime in my teens. I've played every game (except the spinoffs). I was sad to see Ash go. But now I get to share this new generation of Pokémon anime with my daughter. So far, Horizons has been the best "reboot" I could ask for. Its so much more interesting than the loop that the old Pokemon liked to repeat over and over.
I've played every game (Except the gen 2s, though I did get to experience the gist in HGSS) and I've got a living form dex in my pokemon home... I'll just continue ignoring the anime because they lost me years ago and I still have no reason to look back when there's just better things to watch.
I was very upset that they had to replace Ash. But then I went to positive side. Ash may be gone, but I’m sure that he’s off traveling around the world to explore more regions that he hasn’t visited yet. And I can imagine what other Pokémon that he may caught off-screen. And who knows, maybe Greninja and Primeape will return to Ash’s side one day.
Ash just had so much more room to grow. I think instead of replacing him it would’ve been cool if they focused on developing his character. Those few final episodes of ash exploring could’ve been the start of an amazing post champion journey I have watched all of Horizons though and it’s a good show
Personally, I find Ash to be more entertaining. I'm an introvert, maybe even to a fault as the most social interactions I have is when I'm checking out at Walmart. Liko to me is exhausting. All the same stuff she goes through is too relatable. It's like taking work home with you at the end of the day. Liko being an introvert is fine, but when it gets the point that I'm questioning if that is what I'd do in her situation, it becomes mentally tiring. With Ash, I didn't have to worry about that because he wasn't like me, and the situations were purely fantasy. On top of that... Well, introverts aren't that interesting. I should know, like I said I'm one of them. Being a Pokemon Trainer isn't just about bettering Pokemon, but bettering yourself as well. In that regard, Ash failed and he should've been replaced. But if the goal here is for Liko to "better herself" by not being introverted anymore, that's not really a good message. It's like saying "Hey, you're a freak but that's okay, I can fix you". Being introverted or extroverted isn't a disease, and not everyone wants or needs to get out or calm down. Pokemon, like you said, favors the more extroverted. Trainers need to leave home to start the journey, something a more introverted person is less willing to do. You also need to compete against other people for Badges or Ribbons, and most introverts I know aren't willing to cause or partake in conflicts since we generally like peace and tranquility. And of course, you need to be around other people constantly, be it in a Gym or on a Stage, and that's something we generally like to avoid. Pokemon is all about that kind of stuff. Traveling the region, getting in front of hundreds of people, testing yourself against 1 or more other trainers in battles or fashion or whatever, and of course dealing with troublemakers.
It's also just neat to see a new character with a new journey/perspective. It's a breath of fresh air. However, there is one challenge with introverted protagonists, and that is that things actually have to happen. It's good to have an introverted character overcome their introverted tendencies, but if a show keeps going on with not much really happening, it seems like the show is just trying t o make a point about how introverted the character is. People want to see action, and more importantly, improvement. If a character, introvert or extrovert, doesn't change much throughout a series, the story just becomes shallow and boring. There is a fine balance that must be struck between the character's initial personality and how that personality changes over time. Too much change and they feel like a completely different character. Too little, and they haven't made any progress. If the show is meant to be empowering, the character must progressively overcome their flaws and weaknesses as time goes on.
"Why replace Ash Ketchum with Liko?" well they got tired of being lazy with the same thing over and over. They probably wanted to make the Pokemon franchise more open to other stories and the Pokemon World is big.
@@taylorsanada3180 The Anime burned to ashes when Ash lost in Sinnoh to what was obviously plot armor. Putting fucking literal mythics and legendaries in a battle... Wtf.
I have a great example for this, miraculous tales of ladybug and cat noir, people always say it’s for girls because it’s about a girl using superpowers. Most people will just forget that it’s a everyone show because the protagonist is a girl and yes, I know cat noir is a boy but still and I hate to see people do that because I love that show and I’m a boy I can like that show. But people will say that miraculous is for girls because it’s about a girl but that’s completely wrong. It’s a show. For everyone. I like it my cousins like it. They’re both boys too. We’re allowed to like it. People always forget that no matter what gender the protagonist is it’s for everyone.
I would disagree, when Spinel was able to hide his plans more sneaky and was able to throw off the RVTs. I feel if she encounters the Rocket Trio, Liko would start questioning and putting thing together that she is being duped. And if Hatenna is involved, they plan is down the drain.
personally the only problem i have with this new series is the name, there is already a pokemon manga that takes place in alola named pokemon horizons, and its one of my favourite pokemon manga series, so now its sad to me that when you say pokemon horizons that manga doesnt even come to peoples mind
I find it odd and funny that for years (since season 1) people complained about ash being clueless and immature, like is a female version of that but everyone thinks she's amazing. I'm 14 episodes in and friede, cap and Charizard have been the stars of the show tbh and I'm not a fan of them immediately showcasing ceruledge in the first couple episodes. In the past they would of had ash or one of his traveling companions show how to evolve bisharp into ceruledge but now they just make him and other fully evolved Pokemon partners for the new "team rocket". I feel that's the biggest issue with horizons is having the villains already advanced and good trainers while liko and Roy are just learning, The adults the kids travel with are worthless other than friede.. just seems messy and rushed
Paul is, and always will be my favorite rival. I was always happy to see him cause it radiated "I dont care" energy from him when I was a kid which was a mood when I was watching the Diamond and Pearl anime. Paul was sure, a jerk but I got over stimulation so easily - the 'I don't like noisy crowds' is just him. He just literally was doing his own thing and then the freaking Chosen One rolls up and ruins his moment, I kinda like how he just doesn't mess around and cuts Team Rocket's crap sometimes. Do we really need some up-beat cheerful motto every time with the same disguises that Ash easily - and maybe just a theory - but maybe Ash already knows its Jesse James and Meowth but he can easily beat them with just Pikachu, so maybe Ash is a little messed up. Ever anyone think about that? Ash is an adrenaline junkie, lets face it he never wants to go home to his mom and talk about his problems, he would rather stay with Professor Cerise/Sakuragi despite Pallet Town being so close - research fellow my butt, he'd rather stay with Kukui. Ash has problems, he's messed up and you can't convince me other wise. Paul acknowledges this that Ash uses his cheerfulness as a facade for when he's really angry. Yet they complain about Pokemon Horizons and want another rival like Paul, everyone get a grip. Proves we weren't ready for Diamond and Pearl's anime. Though great video.

i actually really like the new protag. Liko is a breath of fresh air from Ash after 20+ years and if people miss Ash, Roy is basically him. Seeing how Liko internalizes and tackles the same problems Ash has in a completely different way is really fun and interesting and seeing her grow so far is exciting. I now find myself watching Pokemon every week like a kid again.
Honestly, if the new protagonist was too much like Ash, I would've just preferred to keep Ash as the protagonist. There would be no point in changing things if we were just going to do a show with Ash with a new name and look. Using a character so vastly different from Ash makes it seem like a new show that can appeal to old and new fans. Plus, as a girl who loved shows that centered around boys and usually only had one random girl thrown in who had one or two episodes where she was the center, I love that the new protagonist is a girl. I'm obviously not religiously watching Pokemon like I did when I was a kid, but I can appreciate the new direction and I did watch the first few episodes just to get a sense of the new character.
My gripe with Horizons is not about the protagonist role, but how boring it is for many extroverts. There should be a balance for both them and introverts. As well as more Gen 9.
We still don't know if Ash will make an epic return in Horizons yet my theory is that the Rising Volt Tacklers will be visiting Pallet Town in Kanto so Fried can meet up with his old friend the World Champion Ash Ketchum and then Liko and Roy will be asking Ash to become their teacher so they can become stronger trainers.
5:30 That's 100% in bad faith... Ash 99/100 times can understand how people feel and resonate well with them. But the issue is there's 1000+ total episodes so every now and then the writers will make him intentionally skip a beat to create story drama. Give it enough time and the new protag will have those "issues" as well.

This is very insightful. I watched Indigo League and played Pokemon red/blue a long time ago, but never got back into it. I think now that there's a character I can relate to, I might pick up Pokemon again.
@@kitty_celestewhy does it have to a character you can relate to? I dont relate to ash a bit but i still find him far more enjoyable than that boring ass girl. Horizon is a kind of anime that is good only because of the side characters not the protag herself, just hillarious
@@Moonlight52671 Relating to a character and especially a protagonist, is much more of a special experience. You might not relate, and think that she's boring, but that's how people think of me, too. I appreciate the representation of being introverted, which is something you clearly don't understand or respect. You might think that there's a lack of character development, but that's how some people actually behave, and it's represented quite well. Indigo League still exists, and you could go back and watch it anytime. Not everyone wants to watch a show with a hyperactive protagonist; it can actually be quite overwhelming for some of us. It really sounds like you need to learn how to respect people who are introverted.
Pokémon Confirms Ash's Return... With One Big Caveat - IMDb. Ash and Pikachu will likely return to Pokémon eventually, but when it happens, Ash will still be portrayed as a 10-year-old. Other characters from the original Pokémon series could appear in Pokémon Horizons before Ash returns.
As a friendly but quiet introvert (I consider myself as one) this has got to be one of the best videos I've ever watched! You're so right! I'm finally seeing Pokémon and Nintendo related shirts in the girls sections in clothing stores which never used to happen! I honestly really like Liko as a protagonist and Komi and Bocchi are great characters as well!
I don’t agree that these new shows have to push female characters in every single show. If they have a female character I want it to fit well with the show not just because it’s social right. Like inside job was extremely good and it had a female protagonist. Or like shows like Rick and Morty the main characters are guys and they are hilarious. So imagine next season making them females going forward ? It Lowkey piss me off cuz the show is about Rick and Morty, ion want to see changes to what brought me into the show. Same goes with inside iob. But horizons is Pokémon but a whole new story I’m not going to watch it because theirs a girl in the series I’m going to watch it because it’s Pokémon and for the new story. Same goes when ash was in the series he lowkey was annoying sometimes but it was still Pokémon. So my critique will be based on how good the show is over all. Shi she can end up to be even better then ash as a character so we’ll have to see.
Growing up with Captain Jean-Luc Picard (who replaced Captain Kirk; Picard just recently got replaced by Captain Seven Of Nine), I can finally understand why the Pokemon fandom can sometimes dislike Liko. Guys, it's just the next generation of Pokemon trainers. Just let them grow on you. The OG characters including Ash may be gone, but he, Pikachu, Brock, and Misty will always be in our hearts. Liko = Jean-Luc Picard Ash = James T. Kirk
I totally agree!!!!!! The way that they made Liko's character makes her a lot more realistically relatable!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a fresh & brand new perspective that I love that we are getting that I never imagined pokemon would ever do!!!! All we have for reference is Ash's 25 year long perspective & we don't know anything else of how we should perceive the pokemon anime. Doing this with Liko as reaffirm my hook into sticking with it more with the anime
Is just a generic slice of life introverted character that's been done thousands of times already. Should have just stuck with Ash or did something like Pokémon Adventures instead
I love that they are not having their goals be collecting badges and kanto-Kalos was pretty much just the game with ash as the player character that got stale definitely since he kept losing. It why my favorite ash series is SM then JN second loved there wasn’t trail captains in the anime instead they all went to school and we got to connect with there families would of liked it more if they kept Delia in alola as well. With JN I loved they traveled all around the world and the PWC was cool but they should of had a great conclusion to ash, his friends and TR. Also think they should of made Cersei, his family, his 2 assistants, ash and goh live in a huge flying lab together like the size of the battle pyramid where most of it is the park for Pokémon.
@@Wario1382A lot of anime fans have seemed to have forgotten that the anime creators have said repeatedly throughout most of the seasons that if & when Ash won a Championship, it would be the end of pokemon altogether; so to keep it going, it was Pokemon's time to do a Digimon/Yu-Gi-Oh phase of a new season protag. And All we know what a pokemon trainer acts like is from what we've only had Ash as for reference for the longest time. So we don't really know any other type of perspective of a Trainer comes to be and/or is. - although it would be interesting if adventures ever got anime adapted, but it also needs to be kid-friendly for the audience to enjoy & understand on their level; and given what the SV Adventures characters are like, it'd be a toss-up
Ash is the old lead of the Pokémon anime while liko is the new lead of the anime give it some time first right now I respect the choices of the anime to try something new. Ash doesn’t need to be milked any longer
I admit that NOT having Ash as the main character has been some what difficult (part of me keeps hoping might get to see Ash travel to the Paldea region and maybe catch a Klawf or something). Though have to say, Liko's shaping up to be an interesting character.
Moreover, Roy is also a extroverted character, who shares much more character traits with Ash then Liko. But we saw in his debut episode, that he also participates in class via distance presence. And if he can go with that, so can Ash.
Oh yes will johan the fans will need to get used to something new I respect the choice despite being an ash fan as he doesn’t need to be milked any longer
I would be fine with Liko if she wasn’t constantly talking (well narrating). It feels like the show doesn’t trust the audience to understand what someone is thinking if she’s not always talking. To be fair I’ve only watched a couple episodes so far so maybe it gets better.
I've gave horizon a decent chance to draw me in but the main character has two big of shoes to full and it's not the same without ash when you picture Pokémon the first thing what comes to mind is ash and Pikachu not horizon.
If u have watched ash in years and just switched to liko then many people probably wont like the new series and that's sad fr. Those who wants ash back 👇
I think I'm looking forward to having somebody new as our main character in the Pokemon series, but of course I'll still miss Ash. They could show us a different perspective of things like how Liko interacts with Pokemon and how you compare it to Ash.
Horizons is pretty good so far with great writing (for the most part) However tbh i really don’t like liko. It has nothing to do with the fact that she’s an introvert but rather the fact that she doesn’t progress the story. There are two types of characters Proactive characters and Reactive characters Proactive characters push the story forward by their actions and decisions. They actually keep the plot progressing and their actions have consequences and raise the stakes . Reactive characters are pushed by the plot and story. Their actions don’t impact the story very much and they typically just react to the things going on around them instead of being apart of things happening. Its a common belief in writing that its much better to have a Proactive character. Liko is a reactive character, not a single thing she’s done has had any real impact on the overall story. Ash on the other hand consistently pushed the story forward by taking on gyms, training and etc. Because of this Liko is a lot more boring to me then Ash, Serena or even Goh and Roy. You can have an introverted character that is still proactive and pushes the story forward. Sadly Liko just isn’t that character.
"Liko is a reactive character, not a single thing she’s done has had any real impact on the overall story. Ash on the other hand consistently pushed the story forward by taking on gyms, training and etc." Ash didn't push the story forward, he rather kept it going in circles for no reason 😏
Yeah, if you think Ash is to strong to be the mc in the new series, just make him take the role of the master or brock, so that he can help the new protagonist. Or even better make him be the goal of the mc, like if in the new horizons Ash was talked about more, like some legend of the field, at least make us know of they are in the same universe. I really just feel cut of the series, and no longer welcomed
So glad you decided to show some clips of Toradora. I completely agree with your assessment though. The other major issue is that Ash's time in the spotlight may have been stretch a bit too far.
Representation bit annoyed me. First of all, shounen and shoujo is necessary as classification, because sorry but boys and girls are DIFFERENT. We gravitate towards different things. Exceptions are just that: exceptions. I'm an introverted girl also, and don't even care for Ash as a protagonist, but Liko is plain boring. If you don't feel validated enough unless a fictional characters acts like you, you have bigger problems to deal with.
"We gravitate towards different things." that's not how people work? do you think girls who like thomas the tank engine are like? only care for GIRL trains? or guys who watch stuff like magical girl shows (such as Precure) only care for the BOY characters????? I feel like you're projecting your feelings onto whole groups of people.
@@goose4349 I literally said exceptions exist. It's not my specific feelings, it was the feeling of all of society for a long time which is why we have gendered things. Nowadays everyone is so desperate to be normal though that they won't admit they're a little different and that's okay.
@@Serasugee A lot of gendered things actually came because people wanted to control others, it's not normal human behaviour. Also, pretending like Shonen can't have female protagonists is blatantly wrong (Soul Eater (2008), right there.)
@@goose4349 It can, it just shouldn't be expected to. Yes it is normal human behaviour. I'm so tired of having this argument with people who for some reason can't accept that men and women are different. Why should we be an exception to other animals, which also have gendered behaviour? Of course we'll gravitate to different things because we are different. Exceptions are exceptions. There's nothing wrong with people who don't fall into that mold, just don't act like it doesn't exist in the first place
The only thing I’m worried about is that Liko doesn’t seem to really have a goal. Even if she does and I’m just forgetting it, it doesn’t really match as well with the games.
Liko’s not bad, although I personally think those lousy writers didn’t give Ash a professional conclusion to Ash’s story. Sure, he got his big win as world champion, but there are a few plot lines they haven’t completely settled in his story. Such as the forgotten GS Ball mystery, bringing Chairman Rose and Oleana to justice, the evil Malamar have yet to be defeated for good as they retreated back to their future to make new plans for their return to take over the world, the remaining vines of Team Flare have yet to be wiped out as Ash’s Greninja, Squishy, and Z2 are still hunting them down, Giovanni and the rest of Team Rocket’s empire have yet to be brought down for good, Ash’s father has yet to be revealed, and Ash and Serena haven’t gotten together as the couple they deserved to be.
@@lbtz3192 I am not sure about it The Pokemon Company said Ash departure is not permanent its temporary Also , the voice artist of Ash said being a Pokemon master is not mean being strongest trainer so they told Ash would return meanwhile they r introducing new characters
@@iniyavainaangu5246 Well, I'm hoping when he does make his return, but as main protagonist and not some side character, that's so beneath him, those darn writers would do him right in his story via settling those unsettled plots that haven't been fully resolved for ages. Plus, be cool say for his new adventures he comes to learn some secrets about his family's history, his long absent dad's side that is, and it leads him to search for answers about it, while in process he learns about his dad and probably comes to learn of his current fate. Say like, perhaps the reasons for Ash's dad being so away from him and his mom wasn't because he's a trainer searching for dreams, but say like he went away was to protect them for some big reasons. Also, they finally set up for Ash along with the aid of all his companions, and nearly all their best allies (such as their rivals, professors, Gym Leaders, Champions, Elite Four members, etc.) for an Endgame-like showdown with Giovanni and his Team Rocket forces who have yet to be brought down for good. It’s not that I can’t let go I can it’s just that she is so boring and slow and getting carried by everybody else and can’t dk anything by herself bad replacement for ash🤦♂️
I will allow myself to supplement this video with these thoughts. Ash's replacement with Liko was warmly received because his departure as the main character was too long awaited. This was expected back in Sinnoh and Kalos, when Ash’s tone and morally mature writing corresponded to this. Which we know didn't happen. The Pokemon Company was dependent on Ash for too long, which soon caused a split in the fandom when, after XYZ, they changed his behavior, tone, formula and mood of the series too radically. Such changes can attract a new audience, but if this is a direct continuation with old characters, and not a reboot with completely new ones, a split in the old audience is inevitable. If, right after XYZ, Ash had been let go from his post as the main character, and a replacement had been immediately given to replace him, seasons 20-25 would have been treated much more warmly, as is now happening with Horizons.

I would have prefered a ash traveling with old companions using his old pokemon challenging battle frontiers and black or white tower in unova and maybe battle chateau in kalos and at
the end PWC. Masters would have made him a pokemon master and that would have been that instead they were afraid to close the chapter on ash's story properly. I hate that I'm ok with
ash's story ending I wish they would have sent him off properly with a good fairwell.

Imagine Ash, the literal world champion, going to Paldea and the first thing that happens is him losing to a beginner trainer with a lvl5 Quaxly
lol
hey theres a difference between a quaxly and a snivy
Well aside from pikachu, his other newly caught pokemon would be weak.
It's the same problem as the games, the anime was made to promote the games, so the way it was done was simple, they didn't think well about the logic or how to conduct the story, and the world evolved very quickly, the technology, the way of scripting stories and so on, so the anime became obsolete over time, and from Unova onwards it became messy, a lot of personality inconsistency, so it was time to innovate, both in game with Legend of Arceus and Violet and Scarlet and the anime with Horizons
The problem however, is that after so much time, you can imagine how good the anime could really have been with Ash and the ending wasn't that satisfying, because Journeys had a huge wasted potential, so many old characters that didn't appear, reunions that didn't happen, old Pokémon that weren't used, so even with Ash's victory, it ended with a feeling of incompleteness, as if something was still missing.

The only reset to his character in Black & White.
Liko is already but ash is better
@EWOODJ he may have had a soft reset but let's be real he been acting like that in practically every region he went to even before unova starting from scratch and losing to beginners
Speaking of her being a good successor, I have a very gyneric and obvious theory.
She’s the secret child of Ash and Serena, or Ash and Donn. She has his jet-black hair and their blue eyes.
Introversion simply means you feel energized when you’re alone, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re “anxious” or “shy.”

"What if Ash won his first League in Season 1?" He wouldn't have to lose five more 😏
Not sure the anime would’ve been as successful, remember what happened when they tried to replace Brock? the fans weren’t having it, now imagine if they tried that with Ash.

That's how you're not overly reliant on one chracter replacing ash instead you need a whole cast that is better than or atleast equal to tge top "teams"
i mean no one did say that people like are always going to use invisible comments to say obvious things for with low hanging fruit.
Ash: ah so this a paldea
Trainer: let’s battle!
Ash: ok
Ash loses to a level 4 Fuecoco
Honestly, Liko is just relatable knowing how she is basically just an introvert trying to make friends.
Liko is a lot luckier as an introvert.
When I think of introverts in Pokemon the first name comes to my mind is Red
Red getting a show would of have crazzzzy fire 🔥

Ash was special not just because we spent our lives with him but ultimately because he was the first adaptation of RED from the original games, only with a much different personality and goals but he was connected to that very first game that started in Pallet Town, the playable character is one reason why i think a lot of people could see themselves through him
Welcome back! It's been forever. Several months 👍🏿
3 years ago I said he’d never leave. Pokémon humbled me and replaced Ash, and honestly I’m glad!
I only want to see Ash all grown up tbh. I love the idea of him settling down and being a happy adult man instead of 10. I am obviously excited for the new series, though.
tbh i wanna see all the og characters grown up/in the future if they’re already grown. especially ash or team rocket

Been a while since you posted anything. Good to see you again! A very good video, as usual!
Thanks Kuro!!
Ash is main lead of pokemon anime ❤🙂
Liko is main lead of pokemon horizons ❤🙂
I think there's potential for that happening, honestly. I can't imagine that when Gen 10 comes, they'll do something else with the animé. Liko, Roy, and Dot have a lot of to give and plenty of room for growth, and they don't even have full teams either. I could totally see them going to [insert Gen 10 region here] and exploring it and getting some new Pokémon there. I really hope that's where the animé will go.
@@tokitomuimui Could you stop copy-pasting that into every comment thread?
I like her way more than ash to be honest, also Horizons comes as a breath of fresh hair, everyone has different goals and the art and animation is really good, also I love the fact that the real protagonist starts with pikachu and charizard, I missed that big ass lizard for A LONG TIME, we only saw him as fanservice from time to time and if someone had one it was an antagonist or a side character so he wasnt shown much, but now he's part of the main cast again and that's awesome.
L take ash was him he was that guy he just was tuff
Even though I prefer Ash (mostly due to Nostalgia), I really respect Liko as protagonist and she has so much potential to be an amazing trainer.
"anyone can become a great pokemon trainer and go on these adventures" If everyone is capable of it, there is nothing unusual about it 😏
@@spinotikus1518 unusual about what? having a special pendant with them that has a legendary pokemon locked inside of it and is a descendant of this legendary pokemon trainer who used to own a shiny legendary?
She's sounding to be a classic Mary Sue with all the "special pendant" stuff. The series will fail. Maybe not the first season, but it will come.
Thank you!! This video bugged me Bec he just went on and on about how liko is an introvert etc but ginger never explains WHY liko is an engaging protagonist for her series
You hit the nail on the head. She is reactive. She needed Millie to convince her to catch a new Mon, she always needs friede to rescue her or cap, alot of the stuff with explorers and pendant happen TO her than her actually doing something etc and
I swear people see the world "relatable" and automatically think it means good writing.
Aang and finn are not introverts lol

I want Season 3 of Komi Can't Communicate to get announced already.
@@WaterKirby1994 preach
I gotta say when I first saw Liko in episode 1 i immediately related to her, and that made me so incredibly happy
I’m the type of person who would miss ash but also give her a chance. And I hope to see him Return some day soon.
Any Wolverine or batman cartoon is centered around an introverted character

I havent watched the pokemon anime for years but I think you've convinced me to check out the new season
The sad part is that with Jesse, James and meowth gone we don’t really have a comedic relief other then the Pokémon
the voice actor has placed ash for decades everyone needs rest.
Ash just had so much more room to grow. I think instead of replacing him it would’ve been cool if they focused on developing his character. Those few final episodes of ash exploring could’ve been the start of an amazing post champion journey
I have watched all of Horizons though and it’s a good show
Personally, I find Ash to be more entertaining.
Funny that's what complainers want in saying Horizons is trash and demanding Ash back. They want the franchise to burn to ashes.

I feel like Liko WOULD fall for Team Rocket’s disguises though. She barely flinched when a scary guy approached her from behind in an alley

Also liko won't SHUT UP in the first few episodes
Sometimes the won't stop talking comes back, but not much.

i actually really like the new protag.
Ash was the most experienced pokemon trainer and still an idiot
The conclusion of this video with the background music actually bought a tiny bit of tears to my eyes 🥲

Ash = James T. Kirk
- although it would be interesting if adventures ever got anime adapted, but it also needs to be kid-friendly for the audience to enjoy & understand on their level; and given what the SV Adventures characters are like, it'd be a toss-up
Ash is emotion of pokemon anime series ❤🙂
Liko is emotion of pokemon horizons ❤🙂

Liko is main lead of pokemon horizons ❤🙂
Bro 🙄 but pokemon horizons main lead is Liko 🙂 ok not roy that's why it is not matter because now Liko is main lead like Ash 🙂
@@tokitomuimuiIn execution maybe but in the way that they advertise the series and interviews, they are duel protagonists
Thank you for making this video! Now I am really interested in the anime again (I haven't watched it since the Sun and Moon anime)
Hm, I see, fair and valid points and opinions,
I hope Liko becomes more recognized as a Protagonist as the Series goes on.
Ash is main lead of pokemon anime ❤🙂
Liko is main lead of pokemon horizons ❤🙂
Oh yes will johan the fans will need to get used to something new I respect the choice despite being an ash fan as he doesn’t need to be milked any longer
I never thought about it that way.
Guess I finally know what to say when trying to defend Horizons, haha!
Those who wants ash back

I think I'm looking forward to having somebody new as our main character in the Pokemon series, but of course I'll still miss Ash. They could show us a different perspective of things like how Liko interacts with Pokemon and how you compare it to Ash.
Horizons is pretty good so far with great writing (for the most part) However tbh i really don’t like liko. It has nothing to do with the fact that she’s an introvert but rather the fact that she doesn’t progress the story.
There are two types of characters
Proactive characters and Reactive characters
Proactive characters push the story forward by their actions and decisions.
1:07 she has had not even 4 seasons(i think) and theyre already calling her boring 😭
It's not that people wouldn't want a female protagonist its how the pokemon company is going about it by replacing ash.
Yes, more Horizons content thank you.
Keep it up on your work and this video and channel
I love this video and channel
Thanks you for your video and channel
I love Pokemon All franchise
Ash is actually returning
@@iniyavainaangu5246 As a side character for Horizons or in the future after Horizons series has passed?
@@lbtz3192 I am not sure about it The Pokemon Company said Ash departure is not permanent its temporary
Also , the voice artist of Ash said being a Pokemon master is not mean being strongest trainer so they told Ash would return meanwhile they r introducing new characters
Not to mention they finally let Ash and Serena get together as an official couple from boyfriend and girlfriend to eventual husband and wife, if we get his return in a new series where time has passed or perhaps for an epilogue special that is.
@@lbtz3192 Pokemon Company mentioned Ash is always 10 years old which is a good idea also what is Pokemon master means ? Even the creators don't know what it is such that Ash will always continue his journey no matter what
Wait isn't season two on Netflix? I didn't see it evolve. Maybe that episode didn't come to USA Netflix yet
THANK YOU, i think pokemon horizons is very misunderstood, people are focusing too much on the fact that ash is not there anymore, guys, ash has been as the pokemon protagonist for 25 years and we all love him but we should give an opportunity to pokemon horizons and be more open minded.
7:42 My little pony FIM started with Twilight sparkle only being alone, not going out with friends because she doesn't think it's important, and would rather study all day, to the princess of friendship who thinks making friends is the most important thing ever
