Three geniuses pushing 60 at this point at the end of a three hour show!
Working Man was off their first album and was the song that thanks to a Cleveland radio station and DJ Donna Halper got them their first record deal back in 1974.
This sounds much different from the original. Both are bangers! When you have been playing a song for 30 plus years you like to change it up.
I would also recommend listening to the original.
    Other Songs
    YYZ live in Rio
    Xanadu from Exit Stage Left
Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour
The last bit that they played at the end is from Cygnus X1
Cygnus book 1 and Cygnus Book 2 (Hemispheres) which continues the story will take you on a journey. I would highly recommend those as well.
I am glad you enjoyed Working Man. 😀
    Cheers 🇨🇦

“What is that sound?” That’s Alex showing he don’t need no frets, lol. He’s playing the strings past where the fretboard stops, basically stopping the strings with his fingers. The strings won’t sustain for long, but he has so much distortion and is picking so fast that it doesn’t matter. It’s just makes really high pitched notes. Hell of a solo.

Working Man was their first hit, and it was first played in Cleveland. After it was played the radio station got bombarded with phone calls. Some people even mistook it for Led Zeppelin. The original was different. In this performance they were just having fun.

Masters in their class, most bands in the 90's and 2000's have been influenced by them in one way or the other, ask modern musicians or vocalist and I think they will agree.

  • @bobcarn

Well, they're not "super duper" young. They're far into their middle-age. This is a song from their first album that got played one night on a radio station in Cleveland when the DJ wanted a long song. He had this new album album from a new band and thought he'd give it a try. Everyone loved it, the song became a hit in Cleveland, and a recording studio signed them on and started their career. This song has always been a favorite of both them and their fans and got played on most of their tours. If you want to hear really fun stuff from Geddy on the bass, check out either "Leave that Thing Alone (Time Machine 2011 DVD)" or "Snakes and Arrows Live - Malignant Narcissism". Phenomenal bass playing in those two!

Rush would write sections where they would all 'solo' at the same time and make it sound cohesive. For another great example of this, listen to Freewill from Time Machine - Live in Cleveland (the studio one is great too), but the breakdown section in the middle is a wild ride. For some bass solo work, check out a live version of Leave That Thing Alone. Rush is a wild journey - and wait until you discover the lyricism!

Here’s the video of them doing the song in 1974 - at a Canadian high school, no less! They have come a long way since then. They were only 20 or 21 here and had just released their first album. The video has their original drummer, John Rutsey, and this was just a couple of months before he left the band. th-cam.com/video/SZYr_J9H54I/w-d-xo.html

Performances like this are what happens when 3 musicians spend over 30 years developing and perfecting their craft together. The connection between them becomes so deep it's almost telepathic. 30+ years of experience and hard work created a masterful performance that no band in their 20s could possibly give.
