  • I had a pretty good feeling that I had a broken valve that fell down in the cylinder. follow along for the steps I took to remove it. I learned by the time I was done I didn't need to remove quite as many parts as I did. feel free to comment or ask questions. I'll answer them the best I can 🙂

      Yes. I felt successful but in the end I wished I would have had the head completely done. It wasn't getting good compression on the damaged cylinders and I ended up scrapping the car and buying another because I simply didn't have time to do it again. I got a good scrap value because it was still a good engine that just needed a head job

    What did you do to get that valve cover off

    • @jamiemciver2326
      @jamiemciver2326  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I had to pry on it in a couple spots or maybe a chisel. It marked the surface a bit but I filed it clean and sanded with some fine paper before reinstalling it with a new gasket. Double and triple check that you have all the bolts out including the ones on top in the middle because that sucker won't be cheap to replace. I broke my timing chain cover because I missed a bolt and that cost me another $100 for a used replacement. That valve cover will be much more I'm sure. Also make sure to get a very complete gasket set. There are 12 or 13 gaskets and seals to replace on that sucker. Hope this helps. Feel free to comment back

      @@jamiemciver2326 I thank you and I haven’t took out the top bolts so I’m go ahead and do that and what about the coolant pipe on top of it, did you have to remove that ?

      @@dblock8645 I had to remove the retainer bolt to turn it to the side to get one of the valve cover bolts but didn't need to remove the pipe. As I recall the pipe comes out with the valve cover

    That gouge would have been just fine with a light hone oil will
    Sit in the groove and cause minor blow by but I’ve seen huge scoring that ran just fine

      It’s not a race car engine fairly fogivable

      @jamiemciver2326  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for that input. I did take my chances and changed the 2 valves that were obviously bent and put it back together. Unfortunately I probably needed to change all 4 on that cylinder and grind them in because it had very low compression and would barely run. Bit the bullet and scrapped the car :( wasn't going to take my chances wasting time doing it all over or wasting money on an engine that might still give me other problems

    Hi there, Have the same car, Been looking for a leak for a few weeks. Seems I had some on the top valve cover gasket so I went in and replaced the gaskets, They pretty hard and shot so I might as well, but looks to me so far, haven't done a full look around since I have to take the tire to check fully, but think I have a leak on the timing chain cover itself. Can't seem to find a gasket for that. Do you know if it's only the sealer lube that they use? I want to make sure before I remove the cover for the chain. I do have the gasket maker lube, but if they have a gasket we can use would want to use that of course. Thanks in advance if you are able to answer that.

    Im about to do mine, just has misfire cylinder 4, will not go away. So they told be that my car has burnt valve 😢

      It was quite the chore. I should have replaced all 4 valves in the one damaged cylinder and I regret that. Maybe should have had them ground to seal better also. Good luck

    Did this motor sit for a long time unused? What do you think caused the valve to break? Did you end up buying another motor?

    • @jamiemciver2326
      @jamiemciver2326  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It did sit for a while before I bought it. I had to unclog the catalytic converter and then it drove just fine for about a thousand miles. I just drove normal. Wasn't revving it or anything. I just check it off as a very uncommon random failure. They happen. Just not often. I changed 2 valves in the head and had to strip the spark plug to get it out so I put a heely coil in it and reassembled. Lots of little challenges along the way and lack of daylight and poor weather slowed me a lot. It's all reassembled now. Unfortunately the starter only clicked. I know it's not seezed because I turned it all the way with a wrench so I'll dig into that tomorrow

      @jamiemciver2326  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ps: I may not have mentioned but I learned through the head rebuild portion of this project that the valve spring broke giving the valve slack and the retainer clips fell of and it dropped into the cylinder

    • @jamiemciver2326
      @jamiemciver2326  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ps: the starter was bad. Probably From trying to start it so many times while it was seized. It's one of those cars that will give continuous power to the starter for a short time even if you let off of the ignition

    Hi I watched your video and I have a 2013 chevy malibu 2.5 and when I start the car there's a knocking sound over by the timing chain area and white smoke pours out of the tail pipe and after 2 minutes of the car running it dies, could this be a blown head gasket or a connecting rod?

    • @jamiemciver2326
      @jamiemciver2326  ปีที่แล้ว

      To answer that I'm going to say yes it could be those things. It might also be the timing chain has jumped a tooth which I've heard isn't unheard of on these engines. It's kinda hard to tell without some trouble shooting. I'm sure there are a couple other possibilities as well. I'm sorry I can't be of more help on answering without digging into the car a bit

    Was the crank bolt backwards thread or regular

    • @jamiemciver2326
      @jamiemciver2326  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is regular. Ridiculously tight. I went just less than recommended because I was pretty sure it would bust off when I was tightening it. You'll need a gauge to measure the degrees after a rather light torque setting

    $300 - $500 for gaskets? DAMN! I found OEM quality full valve cover set on e-bay for $17.

      More than valve cover. Head gaskets and valve seals. Intake and exhaust. Much more
