I'd rather give birth to a flaming porcupine than work in a shoe store....Love you Richard, always did from the first time I saw you on tv. You had an amazing ability to pluck humor out of thin air and make it look so effortless, conceiving and giving birth to the funniest visuals, sound effects, voices. You are the God of Comedy, RIP
Al Bundy, in the flesh! Even funnier! This is comedy gold! First saw Richard Jeni on TV in 1993 or 4, he did a hilarious routine about get-in-the-bathtub-and-throw-in-a-live-hairdryer love songs on the radio. RIP Richard Jeni
i have the HBO specail " the platypus man " on VHS tape .... taped it when it first aired on HBO back in the day ... early 90's. I need to transfer it to DVD sometime soon. One of the best stand up comedy acts to date.
Thanks so much for posting this! Honestly I have been quoting Richard Jeni for 25 years, and I still get laughs... Didn't know he had died. What a loss....
I would imagine so. My mom, my sister and their friends are *JUST* like Richard described. Me, my brother and my dad are easy: when we need shoes, we just buy a pair and get the Hell out of the store.
The worst for me was when one woman, just one came in the store. It was a store that sold $10,000 shoes, but there were some that were expansive. It happened on several occasions, one would get cut from the heard, and she would come in alone, and try on every pair of shoes the store had. And I had to go get them from the backroom. And after 2 hours or so, she would leave without byeing a single pair. It drove me crazy lol.
That has to be the worst. I still get customers like that today working for my brother-in-law. I design outdoor kitchens for his company and this one couple we had this past Saturday changed their minds more than a girl changes her clothes on a night out. I was getting madder and madder as the hours passed until finally - after about 3 hours - they agreed and made a deposit. Idiots, what can you do about them?
Either HBO or Showtime back in the 80s had a Jeni comedy special “Boy from New York City.” This was before “Platypus Man.” I wish someone who has it could upload it. I can’t find it anywhere. He did this bit about “real” New York Italian family on “Family Feud.” Funny. As. Hell!
Showtime had two specials featuring Jeni, Boy from NYC and I think, Crazy From the Heat. You’re right, neither are available anywhere online. Pure gold just waiting to be uploaded from someone.
folks remember the "platypus man" comedy special. But does anyone remember "Platypus Man"...the series? it was richard jeni's short lived sitcom, the helped launch the UPN network
This man is so funny other comics you wait for a while then you might laugh but Richard is just plain funny to bad he did not think so and killed himself what a waste.
ninespot rocha Yeah, Richard Jeni is one of my favorite comedians. Everything about him was just one big "I know that feel exactly!" but in a way that few can put into words into such a manner that it's humorous.
OMG...*WHEN* did Richard Jeni die??! How did I miss that? I have been looking and looking for what, I believe, was his GREATEST show ever, HBO's "Platypus Man" standup special from around 1993...does ANYONE know is this is available ANYWHERE on DVD?? I think its the best comedy show EVER...any news??
@r3gr3ssor I can see why your comment has received too many negative votes. Your lack of sensitivity and compassion is really disgusting and stupid, especially if you've suffered from depression as you claim. Just because you have an experience doesn't mean others should or would react the same. What you said is rude and inappropriate. In spite of Richard's success, he took his own life, which is tragic. I'm sure selfishness had nothing to do with it. I can see why you need help yourself.
richard was so great he was my favorite comedian,Rest In Perfection
Thank you Mr. Dennis London! You have fulfilled a duty to your age!

I love Jeni. It's a shame how his life ended.
I didn't even know. This really sucks
Thanks so much for posting this!

epic horn sound effect!
And to get that, all Richard needed was his voice and some echo added to the microphone.
He was one of the greatest. My favourite version of his women shoes bit 4:51
6:42 "What if they don't fit?", "I'LL THROW 'EM OUT. You're pissing me off, put 'em in the bag". Love that line!
I worked in a shoe store when I was 22. Guys really were like this, and the women... I could go on and on, I am not kidding.

Chop 'em into itty bitty bits and mix 'em in with your kitchen tiles?

Big woman shopping for shoes: "I'm going to keep looking around."

The penultimate sad clown.
Its hard to believe that he killed himself, but I suppose in that few minutes he had a massive surge of depression
Because Larry didn't kill himself.....
@VIPER1ification no junk no soul
