My Beretta 21A Bobcat is classic semiautomatic. I was a 1st Grader when Beretta engineers designed the innovative "Tip-Up " barrel. EDC or CC handgun that has outstanding ergonomics, use premium ammo(CCI Mini-Mag) for flawless operation.
Back when I bought my Cougar 9mm 20 years ago, I saw the Bobcat and immediately liked it. Such a cool little pistol. A great addition to any collection.
i love my little bobcat. i got it for discreet carry while hiking the appalachian trail. because there is no extractor, you need to try different brands of ammo to find the one that cycles best. for mine its cci stingers.
Just purchased one a few days ago. It was a birthday present from my brother. I'm a ratger small female and the big .50 cal he favors was entirely too much gun for me. I love this weapon. Took it to the range to get comfortable with it, it's like an extension of my arm. Easy on recoil, and just does it's job, no difficulty.
I purchased the blued model with walnut grips and 1/2x28 threaded barrel. Great little pistol and shoots suppressed surprisingly well. With a Banish 22 suppressor on it, the gun looks and functions great.
I love mine it's so fun to shoot. When I get done shooting mine, I always run a Q tip in the chamber so the brass easily extracts from the chamber for increased reliability.
A great pocket pistol (mine has the Rosewood grips) that actually fits in the front pocket of my Levis or in my coat pocket, where ever I want to carry it. Do yourself a favor - Know that it's VERY finicky on the ammo it prefers. It's the most finicky gun in my house as far as which ammo to use in it. And it only likes the good stuff!! Like Mini-Mags, Stingers or any of the super premium ammo, that not only helps up the reliability of the weapon but gives it a slightly better punch as well. The first time I shot one of those ammo brands and it was like an entirely new gun!! Also if you're a sloppy, clean em once a year whether they need that or not gun owner, this isn't the pistol for you!! BUT if you shoot the right premium ammo out of a clean, properly lubricated pistol you'll LOVE your Bobcat like I LOVE mine. It's the perfect purse gun too ladies. You never have to rack one into the chamber with that tilt up barrel, nice and light, easily concealable and SAFE too as it has a safety button. And it's inexpensive to become a great shooter with this gun. Plus it's a Beretta!!! P.S. My now late father the first time he saw that gun he quipped "I'll bet it's really accurate in a latrine stall or phone booth"...
Agreed. Finicky indeed. And as you mentioned, can be obviated. Copper Plated Round Nose solid cartridges (no hollow points) High Velocity only (no Standard Velocity) work best. Brand-wise I would say in this order: COPPER PLATED -- CCi Mini Mag CPRN 40gr -- Aguila Super Extra CPRN 40gr LEAD ROUND NOSE (not copper plated) -- Blazer (CCi) LRN 40gr -- Remington Thunderbolt LRN 40gr (bulk package, for lots of practice)
How are the wood grip’s “grippiness” as compared to a polymer grip? Never liked wood on a weapon, like some 1911’s - but does it feel the same and is it as resistant? Why would someone go with it just style?
Yes, .25 acp caliber is a much more reliable caliber than the .22LR caliber, but I decided to buy the very lightweight KEL-TEC P32 model in .32 acp because of it's amazing power for the size of the pistol.
I have both. They are approximately the same, but 22 ammo is available and cheap. Practice with the Bobcat; Carry it if you wish. I use the Tomcat as my car
1:55 21A also has another choice, half cock position set safety on . Secondly a Heads Up for 25acp bobcats. Mec-Gar website offers a NINE round magazine for 21A in 25acp. 9+1 wow!!
Beretta cautions about carrying on half cock.. if dropped on Hammer it can shear off the hapcock notch and fire!! Carrie only fully cocked and safety on or hammer down safety on or off
Probably Remington yellow jackets or vipers if you can find them.. they have a conical shaped bullet which tends to feed better in the bobcat.. I have never had a malfunction with Remington yellow jackets or vipers
Love that thing I used to keep one on me when I was rabbit hunting. I had a sling pack harness to my waist with my utility belt. Cross draw holster attached, so if a rabbit jumped out at close range unexpected I could drop my 22 rifle on the tact sling and light em up.
Purchased mine about 4 years ago used in mint mint condition beautiful blue steel and light colored Walnut grips most likely made in the 1990s.. mine loves Remington yellow jackets and viper conical shaped bullet... Not one malfunction with Remington yellow jacket or viper 22s
Ah, the Barretta 21a. Gives you a 6 shot wound area with hardly any recoil. If it's up close and personal that's a devastating wound channel. It gives you a chance to GET AWAY. That's what you need in a bad situation. Shoot the bad guy and get away. It's basic. Get away from the threat!
I wish I would have read this before I read other comments on different channels. They made statements that the Bobcat wouldn’t stop an intruder. Well I went and bought a 9mm. Oh well. I still have my cherished Bobcat too.
This is a great pocket pistol, I have two and have tested them both wit CCI and Remington Thunderbolt and both worked flawlessly. I did modify the magazine by bending and polishing where the bullet feeds. My only issue I have seen is one of them was damaged during manufacturing on the dove tail, but it is only cosmetic. They polished the area and it is not even on both sides. Something like China would do. So make sure you look over one before you purchase. Both my 21A's were manufactured/put together in Gallatin, TN.
I've had a 21a almost 30 years now, and it's a good firearm. The only problem that I had was when I started using CCI Stinger's at the range one day. Everything was going well, the stinger ammunition had more snap to it, but then the gun stopped shooting. I looked at the base of a cartridge and there was no indentation, I looked at the pistol and the firing pin and spring were both gone, blown right out of gun. Beretta fixed my pistol at no charge and turnaround time was extremely fast. I no longer use CCI Stringer's in this gun, and never had any further issues. Good company, products, and customer service.
Onix Bobcat for 7 yrs , goes everywheres & likes CCI Mini Mag 40gr solid . Cans @ 20 yrds are hit often. Cottontails are left to the 87- T . Something about Berettas ....
Got one myself used a couple of months ago, but haven't shot it yet. I hope it's as reliable as my Taurus PT22 has been. I really see myself enjoying it if it is.
Great review! Thank you Sir for the video. Great little gun, definitely have not seen purse guns in 22 LR, which is kind of surprising. Also, hammer forward is definitely a good feature. A lot of people talk bad about it, but I think it is great for beginner CCW when you are just getting used to the feeling of carrying a firearms on you.
I own both the Taurus Pt22 and the Beretta 21a.. I keep going to the Taurus and placing it in my pocket. It feels better. The safety is easier to use. It is a fun gun. I really didn't need the expensive Beretta.
Lots of videos out there about these, and I think this is the only one I've seen that mentions these have no extractors. I use Aguila 60 grain sub sonics in mine. Loaded in a "short" case, the 60 grain bullet is so long the OAL is Long Rifle size. The extra mass of the bullet gives the slide more "snap", and I am sure is harder on the gun, but the shorter case with more positive "blowback" sure gets the empty out of my gun, and they feed fine in mine.

I bought the ,25 version of this many, many years ago. I carried it daily under (Lefist oppression) circumstances, and I was totally confident about it. I currently carry the .32 version of this in the summer while carrying a Beretta Model 1934 (mine was manufactured in 1952) as my winter gun. Love Beretta. Among others.
My mother use to carry a 25acp autoloader pistol inside her purse! I view pocket pistols a great concealed carry to me! I carry a Glock model 27 .40 S&W caliber pistol! I have a lifetime carry permit!
Failed to mention Beretta makes some of the finest guns worldwide. I've got one of each caliber made except (up to 9mm) .22 short; never jammed, failed to fire for any reason and uses any standard ammo I've tried(I don't use "cheap" ammo), including +P. Also have the well known 9mm military issue (M9). These guns are up there at the very top; they've been making guns since the mid 1500's, I think they've got it right, haha. I can definitely recommend the brand for any size or caliber you like best. I've never had any problems at all with the Beretta's I own and shoot.
I own a Beretta 21A .22LR. The sights are very hard to see. I may try painting the front sight white to see if that helps. I haven't tried the point and shoot method yet and will try that the next time I practice with the bobcat.
Bobcat 22 can be finicky about ammo. Best to use high velocity like CCI or Federal. Avoid cheap bulk ammo. Keep in mind 21A has no extractor. Can't clear chamber by racking slide. Have to open barrel, remove faulty round, insert replacement. Hard to call 'time out!' during an encounter. That's why I prefer the 25acp Bobcat.
TY for this informative video. I recently bought this because of the size. I’m a senior so it’s perfect for me. Are there any other small easy on the hand guns made for the senior market as I have frail hands.
Yes the same gun in the .25 caliber or the Tomcat that's a .32 calliber. That tilt up barrel is great for those without the needed hand strength. No racking a round needed!! Go to your local full service gun range or a gun store that also has a range. They let you shoot before you buy and you can try all kinds of them if you go to the right place. It's the right way to buy a new gun. And it's pretty fun too. Good luck!
YES!!!! I have two NAA mini revolvers that I've carried for over 30 years. They are reliable with any ammo, and I've never had a malfunction with either of them. Hey, they're revolvers, so never any failure to feeds, failure to eject, or magazine problems. Plus, you can get the NAA in .22 magnum. @@jamesbfaber7770
Decent pistol. If you pull the slide to chamber a round instead of using the tip up barrel it will fire that round when the slide comes forward. My favorite part somtimes it will give you two or three rounds at a time instead of one and every now and then it will fire eveey round thats loaded in it once the first one goes off.
I have this in .22 and .25. fun guns. The .25 is the better gun. Slightly more muzzle energy in this short barrel... far more reliable and holds one additional round.
An interesting thing is that the mag holds 8 rounds but will not latch in the gun with 8 rounds. I always load 8 and when shooting I take one out to put in the chamber.
luv my Bobcat !! Still being made? Not at the time this was published and still not yet. i was told its back on the order guide by 2 LGS Aug. 2018 but it has been in suspended production sense late 2016. Mainly because of the move from MD to TN. I know many that anticipate its reappearance debut but ive seen very few new guns from the TN plant, guess they still working out the kinks.
I own both the 950 and the 21A. They are both reliable but the 950 is the better, simpler, slimmer design. Beretta should bring it back, offering it in .22 LR., offering it with a steel frame (titanium being optional for us snobs). I owned a Tomcat with a titanium frame (one of 1,000 manufactured) and it was a work of art, without the notorious cracking of the frame, as with the aluminum-framed version.
owned this model in blued with wood grips gun, it could not handle heavy or even moderate use, there was a part in the trigger housing that broke and could not force the trigger back to fire in double action or single action.......i had the part replaced., then sold it.....i bought it new in the 1980 's at a cost of $189.00.......it was not cheap......it never jamed, just broke down.... Reply
Also, head shots always defeat body armor. Also, the extractor this is not there, will never break. When you young people gain enough experience, you will understand that. Well, maybe.
If its not threaded and hasn't got a pill bottle silencer then it's not a Bob cat the bobcat was made for the cia I belive with the pre requisite of being small and silenced/suppressed this is just a beretta 21a it was basically made for walk past head shots in crowded places
Tom. You’ve been reading to much spy fiction. This design was first for the general public and then picked up by the “spooks” later. Kind of like the Beretta mod. 70 and Mossad.
Two Question, I thought the slides run on the gips, how does that work with the laser sights and with the two models .22 and .32 acp both having about the same power isn't the .32 the better option being a center fire. Cost being the exception.
No slide runs on the rails not the grip... For self-defense I personally like the 25 ACP over the 22 lr .. not only is the 25 (&.32) more reliable being centerfire.... The 25 ACP penetrates hard barriers better than 22 long rifle out of a short barrel pocket pistol.. another words better chance of penetrating the skull in the self-defense situation... Only thing is 25 acp (&.32 ) cost much much more..
Awful lot of comments about it being picky with ammo. That's not very comforting words for a gun that is for concealed carry self defense. And if I were to carry a 22, I would not be going for body mass as I have read some comments below. I would be going for the eyeball. Especially in the winter with heavy clothing and overcoats, a 22 round is not going to be very effective. Effectiveness, reliability and consistency is what you must insist on. For myself, I have two weapons for concealed carry. A 38 snub nose and a 9 mm subcompact. Both of them go bang every time the trigger is pulled and will accept any ammunition you feed them. Notice I didn't mention the brands because it's not about a childish brand war. And I'm not really trying to make it a caliber war either. Like I said, it's about effectiveness (under all conditions), consistency and reliability. I just don't think you have those things with rimfire ammunition.
You settled my mind as I saw a video on this and there was far too many cons. Main one was it wasn’t good for protection. No way can I rack the slide though it’s way too hard for me.
You don't need to rack the slide.. you insert a full magazine then use the pop-up barrel to insert a round directly into the barrel close it and you can now shoot... It's not a bad gun for self-defense although I personally recommend bobcat 25 ACP if you can find one used..or tomcat .32 ... The ammo cost much much more than 22 long rifle but 25 penetrates the skull better and is much more reliable than 22 long rifle
I have no experience with this firearm. However, I am interested in it. Are there any reliability issues with it not having an extractor? This is not a concept I am familiar with. Your opinion would be valuable to me. Thanks.👍
Reliability more related to using onlyquality ammo like CCI & Federal. Only issue w/no extractor is Can Not extract faulty round by racking slide. Must tip-up barrel, remove bad round manually, insert new round, close barrel.
22lr was not meant for short barrels. That is why .25acp was made. Don't bother with the 22lr. You end up with an incomplete burn of what is already a limited amount of powder. .25 acp was made specifically for short barrel firearms.
I like carrying mine with the safety off and the hammer in half cock. Which you forgot to mention. I love these little mouse guns though. They are so much fun but not the best self defense option. However it is still a gun and these little 21’s are pretty accurate.

I have had mine for 5 years, it's a great pocket pistol. It's picky about ammo, it likes CCI best.
Mine loved the ccI stinger hollow points
Try Remington yellow jackets or Remington viper conical shaped bullets
Mine runs flawlessly with Remington yellow jackets in viper conical shaped bullets not one stoppage with the Remington yellow jacket and vipers
Its one of my favorite guns that I own.
Best small .22lr auto produced without question.

Me, too. But cheap ammo also works for practice.
Mini mags run best in mine, long cased stuff stove pipes for me
Remmington Golden Bullets works best in mine.
I have owned mine for 30 years its a fast shooting gun !!!
Any idea (approximately) how many rounds you've put through it?
I have the Tomcat .32 version of it. Bought it 10+ years ago. Very reliable and great gun.
My mother had one in 1985 very compact and does the job I might get it for nostalgic reasons
Just purchased a used 21A it’s great
I have two of these.. one I have owned for at least 15 years
Just purchased one a few days ago. It was a birthday present from my brother. I'm a ratger small female and the big .50 cal he favors was entirely too much gun for me. I love this weapon. Well I have a .44 Magnum revolver! I felt like my wrist isn't broken yet! So I'm thinking about an upgrade to the 454 casull revolver!
I purchased the blued model with walnut grips and 1/2x28 threaded barrel. Great little pistol and shoots suppressed surprisingly well. With a Banish 22 suppressor on it, the gun looks and functions great.
Beretta 21A I buy everyone I find. Great collector's piece.

Copper Plated Round Nose solid cartridges (no hollow points) High Velocity only (no Standard Velocity) work best.
Brand-wise I would say in this order:

-- CCi Mini Mag CPRN 40gr
-- Aguila Super Extra CPRN 40gr

It is so cute.
I didn't know they made them still.
Was there a .22short version? If so, still.
Mine will fire only CCI mini mags with high reliability.I would consider the Tomcat version in the future which is the 32 acp version.

I carried one of these for years back in the 80s when it wasn’t legal to do so and before it took 60 rounds of 9mm to stop a threat.

There is a "half cock" position on these as well. Carrying it like that with the safety on is safe and logical.
I have the .25 Jet fire. purchased in the late 80s
NICE gun!!!
I had this gun. It was a jam - o - matic no matter what brand ammo I used.
I own both the Taurus Pt22 and the Beretta 21a.. I keep going to the Taurus and placing it in my pocket. It feels better. The safety is easier to use. It is a fun gun. I really didn't need the expensive Beretta.

all 22 guns are picky on ammo brands, just the nature of rimfire, just gotta put a ALOT of different brands threw it, and see what it likes.
The HUGE negative ... the slide does not stay back when empty. Count your rounds.

I own a 950 bs and I love it!

Great video..good info, Thanks..
Is the weapon safe to carry with the hammer down in the decocked position when chambered?
Yep
Beautiful Beretta 21 Bobcat 22 mm ,how much cost now ? Than for posting.(soluu huong)
Where is a good place to find one of these cheap? I’d love to find a gold version. Thanks
Bud’s Gun Shop
I've found a couple at local pawn shops reasonably priced. Gold version
more likely to find at gun shows.
Love mine.
Bought a Taurus PT22 Poly, but I would quickly scoop up a 21A, as a Beretta collector.
Also, head shots always defeat body armor. Also, the extractor this is not there, will never break. When you young people gain enough experience, you will understand that. Well, maybe.
Extractor can break yes but in what models have you seen that happen ?
Nice gun, and the gun review !
Why dont guns this small ever have coloured tracks all the way between the sights for easy line up with no extra pocket obstructions?
The .25 is the jetfire.
This best crossguard gun is a mouse gun.i love them and in yeti world are called malinch poker gun.is black witch.
Informative video, thanks!!
Cute little gun. Looks snappy
good info. thanks
Beretta 22lr @ 11.8oz
Ruger LCP 380acp @ 9.6oz
Ruger is also thinner.
Edit: he said 11.5oz but it is 11.8oz for B21a
21A alloy frame SA/DA while LCP polymer frame DAO. Beretta thicker grip
provides better hold and points naturally. More likely to hit target than LCP
Such a small n light gun , .38 recoil? How accurate ?
Nobody ever talks about the 21A having a half cock safety. Slowly pull the hammer back and you hear a small click. There it is
If its not threaded and hasn't got a pill bottle silencer then it's not a Bob cat the bobcat was made for the cia I belive with the pre requisite of being small and silenced/suppressed this is just a beretta 21a it was basically made for walk past head shots in crowded places
Tom. You’ve been reading to much spy fiction. This design was first for the general public and then picked up by the “spooks” later. Kind of like the Beretta mod. 70 and Mossad.
As the above noted, true - with that pillbox suppressor (GLS makes it? Is there another model/make?) it’s great.
There is also the option to carry HALF-cocked and locked. Why?
I wouldn't recommend carrying this "cocked and locked" as there's no firing pin block
The firing pin cannot be engaged or struck by the hammer with the hammer back and the safety engaged, what am I missing
80 years old, weak hand strength. Is any gun better for me?
Crimson Trace laser grip no longer available
Very ammo sensitive, and keep it well lubed
I have no experience with this firearm. However, I am interested in it. Are there any reliability issues with it not having an extractor? This is not a concept I am familiar with. Your opinion would be valuable to me. Thanks.👍
Reliability more related to using onlyquality ammo like CCI & Federal.
Only issue w/no extractor is Can Not extract faulty round by racking slide.
Must tip-up barrel, remove bad round manually, insert new round, close barrel.
To my understanding opening the barrel often flips the round out by inertia,no? New manual of arms if used to tap rack bang
22lr was not meant for short barrels. That is why .25acp was made. Don't bother with the 22lr. You end up with an incomplete burn of what is already a limited amount of powder. .25 acp was made specifically for short barrel firearms.
Good insight. 25 acp ammo hard to come by nowadays.
It's 7+1 or the mag wont seat. Just because you can fit 8 doesnt mean its right.
Great gun but the 32 cal. model is even more potent. Never have to pull the slide back to cock it.
I HAD A TOM CAT 22 LR BACK SO.E YEARS AND IT WAS A NEAT LITTLE GUN--BUT IS WAS STOLEN SO NOW I AM THINKING ABOUT BUYING THE BOBCAT 22 LR
I like carrying mine with the safety off and the hammer in half cock. Which you forgot to mention. I love these little mouse guns though. They are so much fun but not the best self defense option. However it is still a gun and these little 21’s are pretty accurate.
I want one
