OH MY GOD I've been Googling for HOURS and trying to find the answer to this on the damn FreeCAD forum and wiki and FINALLY you tell me how to link a damn spreadsheet and show how it works. jfc dude you are amazing. This isn't the first video of yours I have referenced and I shouldn't be surprised you had the answer. You are a live (and sanity) saver! 🙇
:) :) Thank you so much for the kind words, happy to help. I do have a spreadsheets in 15 minutes which may be of better help, it's an old video but still valid. I will leave the link here: th-cam.com/video/ij-W5ugn2uw/w-d-xo.html
Nice Tut as usual, linking files seems a good way to save time (especially if you have a lot of similar types of Parts). Export to Paper, SVG & DXF also. On to the next lot.
Very helpful tutorial. One issue when working with Aliases from a linked Spreadsheet is that you have to type the complete name when using it inside the Sketch Editor for example. With a normal Spreadsheet it shows you some options when you start typing.
Thank you! I usually design with a master spreadsheet and I have been wanting to use the assembly workbench, but have been discouraged for not knowing how to link the spreadsheet through multiple documents, so I usually designed all the parts into one document to be honest, I didn't thought it was possible 😅
Hoping this will be helpful for you and open up more opportunities . It can be pretty hard keeping it all in one file. I used to do exactly the same until I found this little gem 😊
@@MangoJellySolutions Gem indeed. I've been using FreeCAD for years and never knew what the link was for or how/when/why to use it. This is fantastic and simplifies too many things I've been doing the hard way!
Brilliant video. I didn't know you could refer to a spreadsheet cell by Reference. Until now I've been doing it by Alias & if I have 20 or so cells Aliased it bogged FreeCAD down to a crawl.
I think you have some of the best FreeCad tutorials on the internet. I have learned so much from watching them. Thank you. I have a question in regard to sharing a spreadsheet; I cannot get the select/Alt/drag to work. Can you tell me if I need to change something in my preferences? Or, is that a default and I'm just doing something wrong. I'm running the latest version of FreeCad, 0.21.1 on windows 10.
@@MangoJellySolutions I can see it on the playlist now, thank you! Makes it easier for me to find a tutorial I'm interested in, but it's also useful when recommending your channel to others (which I do whenever someone asks me how to learn CAD / what software to use, although I usually link the "basics" playlist in such cases, of course).
I use sketches sometimes to solve geometry to extract a resulting dimension as a labeled reference dimension. This might involve lines tangent to an arc or circle then other perpendicular to that. It would require trigonometry calculations to arrive at the dimension I need. It is easier to let the solver do the math and let me use the results. I extract the need dimension using a reference distance that is given a label. I then use that calculated reference dimension in other sketches using the expression editor like .Constraints.DistBelowXYPlane. This works well within a single part file from sketch to sketch. But I cannot get it to access sketch constraints that are in a linked part file. In some cases, I have done the trigonometry calculations in the spreadsheet to create a sketch constraining dimension, so I can do the math, but it is easier to let the solver do the math for me and extract the resulting desired dimension. How do you use sketch constraints that are in a sketch from another part file?
I've been following your videos, completed your latch assembly tutorials, but still can't get satisfactory results on an STP file I'm trying to edit. It is a cover for GPD Win Max 2's M.2 2230 with a hole to allow for an oculink connection. I need to move the hole to fit my adapter. Is there a way I can send you the STP file and a photo of an edited cover to pinpoint new location so that you can teach me or even make a new tuitorial on how to do this?
Hi, I have a question: You have several parts - Part A, Part B, Part C, etc. Now you would like to have a slight modification of Part B, but want to keep Part B as it is, so different Version of Part B, say Part B.1. Would it be possible just to duplicate the file Part B and rename it to Part B.1 and start working from there to modifiy it and create a different Version of Part B?
You didn't specify that you wanted to use it via a link, so I'll answer without links in mind. Yes. I do this all the time. All you have to do is use "Save As" and change the filename. from that point on, you're editing the new file. Anything referencing the original file will be unaffected by further edits (which will be applied to the new file). If you want to go back and edit the original, you'll have to re-open it as FreeCAD considers it closed.
Maybe it is just me, but maybe someone got the problem too: "No autocomplete for aliases in linked spreadsheet" If I link a spreadsheet (in file "data") in another file (named "assembly"), I can link the spreadsheet form "data" into "assembly". But I can't use the autocomplete aliases (because they are not there) ...but when I use the aliases (by typing them manually or copy and paste), they work in "assembly". It is really NOT handy (because I always have to get back to the spreadsheet for var-names and checking typo errors).

Great tutorial!!! Best freecad channel. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks, glad your enjoying the content 😊😊😊
I am really enjoying this series! Learning lots about a tool I use a fair bit! Thanks!
Great to hear that 😊😊

Excellent! Super helpful video. A big thank you!
You're welcome 😊 Glad it was helpful.
Wow. Great. Thank you 🙂
In Part Design I still use 'Part' - made up of multiple 'Body's to help manage complex designs.
Oh, interesting. I always use Links to Parts, even for parts that are created in the Part Design workbench.

I think this is missing from "Beyond the Basics" playlist?
Glad you enjoyed, oh thanks for the heads up, will add that now.

Never mind, I've figured it out after watching more of your tutorials and stumbling on the solutions.
Glad you found the solution 😊

Can spreadsheet 2 cell a1 reference spreadsheet 1 cell a1? Spreadsheet 1 link in part clone to alter some specific dimensions only.
👍👍👍
