The order in which you choose the shapes determines which shape is subtracted. In this example choose the bottom Shape first and then the Oval on top. The same goes for Intersect with the Picture underneath the shape; select the image first and then the shape.

For those who can't substract, there's the solution:
Firts, convert the SmartArt to shape(Select SmartArt>SmartArt Design). Then, select the shape, and go to shape format>group>ungroup. And then, select the shapes like the video. Hope this can help to you as helped to me! :D

for anyone asked "why i can't subract it" or the merge shapes look gray and cannot click it.
it is because you need to "convert to shapes" for Smart 3d Art you use (for this case, it is the that larger circle art), then you ungroup it so it will separate.
hope it will fixed it, im already trying and it's fixed ;D
