I agree 100%. In fact, making something “dark” has no impact if there isn’t anything “light” to compare it to. If we can’t see the genuine good out there then we are left to assume that the tone they set is just that worlds’ normal. Especially in a show where it can be partly boiled down to “beat the bad guys” you need to be able to see how there could be a better place to go once the protagonists succeed.

I think the biggest problem with this show is nothing happens. You can summarize most of the episodes by saying, "they go on the run until they stop somewhere, meet someone and that person or people get a whole episode of setup, rinse and repeat.
Agreed. Most of the complaints in this video didnt actually bother me as I get the style. But the nothing happening everything going nowhereness of it is killing me.
I can definitely empathize with HiTop here; I grew up on the Teen Titans cartoon before I got into superheroes in 2012 and during Cartoon Network’s golden age in the 2000s.
So a cop that shoots someone to stop them from committing mass murder should be labeled a killer? not a hero? When did we start being so reductive we removed all the nuance to make our point? :-( I want to believe we can overcome hating our own past but you guys seem to remove the hope from my heart.
@@TheIllusiveWorks The same way that Stannis from game of thrones can remove a man's fingers for being a traitor and yet give that same man a significant portion of his power. "A bad deed does not erase the good, neither the good deed erase the bad." A killer can wear both labels, a killer and a hero. One who weighed lives on a scale that perhaps wasn't his to weigh. A cop killing someone is different from a masked vigilante doing the same. They have the trust of the city and the backing of the people to do what is right for them. Batman is unstable by his own admission and refuses to kill due to it. Nothing bad can be erased from history, but that doesn't mean we can't acknowledge the good. Batman in those movies weighed lives callously and deserves more hate than acknowledgment
@@rajasurapaneni3501 Yes in those Batman movies he may be since it is a different writer and not the one that has written most of his stories, but in your own words you seem to acknowledge a lot more nuance then the people that simply label him a killer, as well please don't take my reference about cops as me labeling Batman a hero(that was simply an example not comparison) I would agree with you when you say he is a vigallente, but you seem to be proving my point that the original argument was and is reductive.
I think it has more to do with if they have a habit of killing rather than if there are isolated incidents of someone dying through their actions. Like, if you can reasonably expect them to kill again in the future, through intention.
I’ve. Never in my life seen a person who cares about these characters and film as a whole as much as you. I’ve been watching for a while and it’s fathoms me how no one has called you up to write or direct something dc related. My biggest problem is that this show didn't feel like a titans show. We just needed more episodes with just them. Not batman, jason or who ever. Just them. The titans
I mean In the movie under the red hood they show Jason progressing to a bad person within Batman’s flashbacks. Like when he first put on the uniform and was a real kid he showed happiness then it goes forward to show him years later breaking a “drug dealing pimp” back. That was progress through jason. He changed. Then when he came back he was still human. He was a man who killed and hurt people but he did it because he felt like his death was unimportant like Batman could continue without him. The two scenes from under the red hood that shows him as a human was the time when he told the drug dealers not to give drugs to kids and when he went on his monologue about how it didn’t matter about everybody else he just wanted Batman to kill the joker. Jason Todd is a complex character. But they just sign him off as a bad guy who is power hungry that’s not him. He’s supposed to be a kid. He was supposed to have character as a kid who could laugh but still showed he had his own problems which grew worse with time. But in titans they don’t see him as a complex character they just see him as another character they can add to the shows crowded cast
yeah my favorite versions of Jason are the ones where he starts off enthusiastic and full of belief in the morals Batman represents but over time slowly devolves into a cynic who's eaten alive by the demons of his past as he increasingly becomes more and more disillusioned and frustrated with his mentor and his methods, it's a character arc that never fails to break my heart
I'm sorry if this is Nitpicking. But teen jason didnt break the guys back. He shattered his Collar bone and batman wouldnt be able to question him until he recovered as the shock he went into sent him into a temporary coma.
I agree with ya, but then again instead of complaining we should try to help them developing this series so it's not set as a never to do project since it got terrible taste to us. Can we complain yes but you must know how it could be beneficial for us for one day to actually help the DC into making our favorite characters.

I feel like what felt the most off for me about titans was (as you said) they didn't express them as people. I grew up watching the Teen Titans animated show and what always hit with me was how they were all outcasts. Not just to society but to each other. like the episode where beast boy runs away from the group because no one wants to hang out with him, he turns into a dog to get some love and gets rejected because he's a green dog. He's rejected from society because he is a green boy, a boy who just wants normal relationships. We could identify with all the characters because we saw parts of our selves in them. It honestly hurt to never feel connected to the titans in the show (especially beast boy for me). Maybe I just have rose tinted glasses for my favorite kids show, but I sincerely hope that you (at hitop) create something from a fans perspective because you honestly seem to understand why I loved the characters I did. Wow… That was a huge nostalgia bomb for me. I remember watching that episode when I was a kid, and feeling so badly for Beast Boy. Thanks for that old memory!
I thought I was going crazy, since every single fan said this show was amazing, the critics say it was good, everyone said "oh, just the trailers were bad". And aside of the Doom Patrol episode, I was NEVER invested in the characters or could care less about the plot. To the point of give up the show in about the 6th episode. And I thought I was just a cynical asshole. But after watching this, thank you, this essay is everything I needed to know. Specially since it really shows that you really love this characters and DC Comics. And I just HATE when people get biassed just for a bunch of Easter eggs and say that is the best thing ever made, and threat others like "fake fans" for not being on board with the plot or characters. (Which you know, IS WHAT MADE A GOOD STORY). So again, *thank you* for all of this work you do. I really hope you can make that Red Hood Show, you sound really excited about it!

Batman Versus Superman is one of the worst comic book inspired movie I have ever, EVER had the misfortune of watching. The problem with deconstructing a hero is that you have to have that hero be his or her optimistic phase first. We never got that with Superman, Snyder jumped straight into broody, dark Superman straight away. Then gave him some of the stupidest, most hypocritical motivation I have ever seen ((He is too rough on criminals! *Tackles a man THROUGH A WALL AT HIGH SPEED*)) with Batmans being just as bad ((I mean I know he's a good guy now but like, if he ever turned it would be terrible so we need to kill him NOW instead of then.)) and then made the entire ordeal boring as hell. So you have two unlikable main characters with terrible motivations you can't get behind having a pissing contest until they discover that *Gasp* their mothers had the same name! And then we get the most unearned and stupid death in cinema history ((...the death of Superman and then the follow ups were some of my favorite comics so this one might have hit a bit on the personal level)) when he could have literally just HANDED THE DAMN SPEAR TO DIANNA and let her do it but no, HEROIC, UNNEEDED SACRIFICE! *Coughs* Sorry, that movie just makes me rant.

DC did not have faith in the titans to be enough by themselves, and it shows in the absence of proper character arcs, it shows in the attempts to seem cool by roping in joker, batman n other characters. Heart of a longtime fan has been certainly broken 💔
"The harshest critics are the biggest fans" hit me hard cause it's so I'm a hard core dc fanboy got drawers full of comics all my favorite characters posters on the wall and it pisses me off to see subpar representation of these amazing characters. I think everyone loves this show so much because they want to love this show but we as loyal fans deserve better. (Thank God for young justice)
Its funny, young justice reaches similar levels of violence and takes liberties with the source material like titans but is more enjoyable and respectful to the source material

YOUNG JUSTICE SUCKS! I had to try that show after all the talk about it... it is disjointed, episodic and boring. Each episode is a new story making each peril seem less important. Characters are OK but has way too many episodes on the bad ones. Please explain how this show is good? Does it get good in season 3 and did you forget how bad season 1&2 are?
You're final point is something that I'm always writing on comic message boards. If we keep throwing money at anything comic-related just because, we'll keep getting garbage. At least Teen Titans Go is a loving, comedic tribute that has reconizable elements to the characters!
I appreciate how you admitted that you didn't want to just throw hate at artists. You just want to see quality characters and interesting stories that give deserved focus to those characters. I can totally sympathize with how you feel about Titans. The original animated show understood much better how to interpret these characters, and it gave each character plenty of focus.

I could figure out what they wanted pretty easily. Dick wants to become his own person but doesn't know what that is, Kory wants her memories back, Rachel wants to be cared for, and Gar wants excitement but also just to be a kid. They all wanted to help Rachel. I understand what people don't like about this show, but I definitely got it.
@@blkloislane It's easy to somewhat understand what they want, but we don't see any evidence of them striving to get it. Aside from Gar and Rachel, we barely see any of the Titans have a relatable conversation.
Its a shame that Hawk and Dove are pretty much gutted out of any of their source material stuff and just reworked to be yet another tragic pair of broken individuals who turn to crime fighting to deal with their issues

Hawk and Dove became full time super heroes after saving their Father, before Don's death in Crisis whihc was like 20 years later... even then not till Dawn's 'Death' in Armaggedon 2001 Hawk and Dove were one of the few heroes that had Both sets of their parents still alive and them being on good terms with them.

How anyone can watch the videos you put out and then accuse you of not being a DC fan is beyond me. The amount of care you put into every video is incredible. You give a damn about this, you know what you're talking about. Your video about Batman is one of my absolute favorites on all of TH-cam. It's truly a great video and it makes an amazing point. To see something like that and then tear the person who made it down? It's ridiculous. We as fans should absolutely give a damn about the media we consume. It's not enough that we get teasers and Easter eggs for stuff just for the sake of them existing. I don't want to be sold on every new character, I don't want a world or universe that exists solely to prop up the next character in whatever series is about to come out. The reason why the MCU works how it does is because they had to take their time and be ginger with these things. They couldn't just throw the avengers out there. You can't just throw a Titans series out there and then secretly sneak a dozen other characters into the mix like a mother sneaking peas into dinner so her kids will eat their veggies. Make the Titans great. Give them their time to shine. There will be time for all those other characters later. Titans, and all of our other media, shouldn't just be "okay" or "good," it needs to be great.
As if "criticizing" something were a bad thing. If you're watching this video and just seeing it as mindless hate, then that's your inability to parse through what's being said. No one would go to the lengths that HiTop does to critique something they absolutely despise and hate. DC making mistakes when it comes to live action media is not a new thing and being a fan of DC can certainly be tiring when you just want them to finally get it right. Titans isn't good, but it can be better. That's the main takeaway from this video. If you still think he just hates DC despite him going out of his way to address that and try to prove it wrong, then there's not much else anyone can do for you. We critique the things we love, the things we know can be better. Mindlessly consuming media because it's "okay" and has to do with the things we like isn't and shouldn't be enough. "Criticism" does not equate to hate.

From what I understand, it's like they're trying to switch the characterizations of Dick and Jason. Jason was the one with the violence problem, not Dick. That's the whole reason they killed Jason off in the first place (because his brash and violent nature wasn't resonating with audiences) and he came back as Red Hood,. Why are they trying to have two Jason Todds? It's a bizarre decision to make when you plan on having them both in the same show. Dick never hates Batman. On the contrary, Dick's whole thing was that he wanted more than anything to be just like Batman, but just wasn't - thus his arch being that he needed to become his own hero (Nightwing). Batman was more than just the hero of Gotham to Dick, he was *his* hero - his father. I don't understand why they're trying to change that or why they're trying to paint Batman in such a bad light. Batman has problems, sure, (I mean he dresses as a giant bat to beat up criminals every night - not exactly the picture of sanity) but he's still a hero - his intentions are still good. He takes on the many different Robins not to try to turn them into mindless crime-fighting machines as the show suggests, but to give orphaned children something to fight for - a purpose - the only way he knows how. Batman is flawed, damaged even, but he is by no means a villain so I don't understand the tendency in recent media to portray him as such (killing people in BVS and now Titans). For being the focus of the whole show, Dick's arch and motivations are so at odds with the spirit of the actual character that its baffling. Sorry for the mini-essay here but these are some of my favorite characters in the whole of DC so to see them butchered like this is just...well tragic.
I honestly thought I was Watching Jason then dick, dick had his Problems with Batman but they weren’t that Bug of a deal. I like ducks Charm and his Personality, the show just makes him Angry for What? Jason kills criminals that deserve it like Joker, his problem with Batman is that He doesn’t Kill joker and stop him, because guess what, he escapes Arkham Asylum every time and Kills another Millions of people. This show Absolutely throws both of their characters and just ruins them and takes out their charms and Actual Personality
I miss TAS depiction of Batman, someone that is not perfect and has a lot of conflict with the world around him and even within him, but at the end of the day he does everything he can to make the world a better place, innocent and villains alike. Nowadays it seems like writers are doing everything in their power to try to reduce his character to just being a genuine jerk and bad person, which is like… Insulting to say the least, like when did it become hip to flanderize Batman?
The filler especially has been great. They do need to get better at handling some characters though; the first ever animated adventure between Tim Drake, Cassandra Cain, and Stephanie Brown, and it was a total snoozefest.

@Ish Moore Couldn’t agree with you more. Batman may be a dark and tortured soul, but he’s mature yet subtly naive because he’s still kind of a child at heart. I’m going to spit a hot take here: I think Batman is more naive then Superman. Now, this obviously varies, but Batman is so attached to his idealist core values, that he stands by them even more that Superman would.
This video essay made me care about these characters more than a season comprised of 11 episodes. Never stop doing what you did with this video. Point out the flaws in something you love so it can be it's best version! I Loved this video
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who lost all hope with episode 7. The explosion scene was so ridiculous and disjointed. Also thank you for pointing out the Jason Todd problem. The scene with him trying to start that bar fight was all they needed. Robin harassing an ordinary person and wanting to maim them is more than enough. Him breaking the back of a police officer is waaaaayyyy too much, red hood doesn’t even do that shit.
Jason didn't murder anyone in his short time as Robin. Sure he had anger issues and went pretty hard on criminals but so did Batman in that time. I agree that this side of him was shown too early but I still like the scene thanks to the choreography

I'm with you on this. I'm glad someone else is trying to make DC realize that there are real fans of theirs that care about the characters they created and are exhausted at the content they're delivering to fans that just can't support them anymore. It IS heartbreaking to watch Titans... Every ... Single ... episode. I enjoyed a total of ONE episode. Doom Patrol. I thought that showed the light at the end of the tunnel, and then they thrust headlong back into the tunnel. I couldn't make myself like or care about any of these murdering A-Holes that they tried to convince me were super heroes. Each of them gave us nothing to "explore" as a viewer. They're entire persona was on their sleeve. The writers seemed to want to tell us, immediately, how damaged they are instead of letting us like the character before showing us what was lurking below the surface. The episodes were monotone, noting like their 80s comic book. These guys are suppose to have a humor about them that masked their damaged history. Any one of these had a backstory that would make a hell of an entire season to explore. I'm so disappointed as a lifelong fan of DC, and a casual fan of Marvel. I'm now a devoted fan of Marvel and a disappointed, use-to-be fan of DC. I can't bring myself to buy anything related to DC until they show that they can go back to their source material and give us great story writing again. If anyone had asked me when I was a kid, who my favorite super hero was, I would've said Robin, because of the Teen Titans, and now, I'm afraid I'll never see a TV or cinematic version of my favorite team and favorite heroes. This will either be seen as a success, and we'll be treated to more of the same, or it will be seen as a failure and the fault of the source. Either way, I don't see DC and Warner Brothers changing direction anytime soon. There's a faint glimpse of hope with Shazam! of all places.
I liked "Doom Patrol" and "Together" those were the only episodes that felt like a Titans show and not "Dick Grayson and whatever tf DC wants to do this week"
I loved the first two seasons of Young Justice. I signed up for DC Direct because I wanted to support more like Young Justice. I’ll sign back up in June so I can watch Outsiders and maybe stay on for Harley Quin and Doom Patrol.

I'm with you on the death scene of Dawn's mother and Hank's brother. When it happened, I actually immediately rewound and watched it again, because I wasn't sure I understood what just happened. That shot was just the worst idea.
You put your all into this series and it shows. Hopefully DC/Warner Bros pay attention to how viewers of these videos have agreed with your points. We want to love DC. We want to indulge in GOOD stories. But we’ve been burned so many times it’s become redundant at this point. I hope they learn from your points. Great job on the videos.
Can’t say enough nice things about this video, Alex. You managed to sum up everything wrong with the show. Titans doesn’t care. There’s so many adaptations of these beloved characters out there that don’t do justice to the heart, love, and legacy that make DC so great. It’s thanks to passionate fans like you speaking your mind that keeps the hope alive for a higher standard. We should care, and thank you for spreading the message. Who knows if you’ll ever get that Red Hood show made, but I do know that you’re going to do great things in the film world. And it’s because you care. Your passion for storytelling is what keeps me coming back to these videos.

They also set up a crazy cultist who wanted to kill Raven to prevent her from summoning Trigon. That implied there was an anti-Trigon faction out there. And I thought the twist was going to be that Raven was sent into hiding to keep her safe from the anti-Trigon cult, and that the anti-Trigon cult was bigger and more powerful than the Trigon worshippers. But they just dropped that.
Wow, that actually makes a whole lot of sense and fills in a big plot hole! I never thought about that. (Still doesn't explain why Rachels mom was locked up though...)

Rachel’s Mom was locked up because she wanted to summon Trigon, even though she was locked up by the people who wanted also to summon Trigon, it was all a set up to get Rachel to summon Trigon. His mother poisoned Garfield and told Rachel to summon Trigon to heal him.

This show seems like it would be a lot better if it had just been shot in Rachel’s point of view. I can picture the whole thing now in her eyes and it would be so easy to get it right. Titans deserved better.
@@bigstunna2049 That's the thing, I don't think they've had anything that blatantly bad for the CW Flash. They've had CGI images that look hella-fake when left on screen for too long but never something that viscerally grabs your attention like seeing two matchbox cars slam into each other and bounce like nothing happened. It's a quick scene and has numerous ways to edit or shoot around it, where as say Gorilla Grogg has to be on screen for periods at a time with numerous variables occurring over a scene.
I don't understand why Trigon is the main villain of the arc about Dick becoming Nightwing. Trigon is Raven's archenemy, she is the protagonist and she should be the one who ultimately defeats Trigon. If they wanted to make an arc about Dick, why not use Deathstroke as the main antagonist? Or Ravager? The producers said DC doesn't have an embargo on these characters after all, why not use them? Deathstroke is a lot of the time an evil Batman (Although I always saw him more like evil Captain America). There is a reason why Dick becomes Nightwing In The Judas Contract in the comics; Deathstroke/Terra is a twisted parallel to Batman/Robin.
Cande Escalante I think the reason they don’t want to use death stroke or any super major characters that have already been used is because they don’t want to get in the way of potentially crossing over and conjoining with either the cw or dc extended universe

I say "unfortunately" because, like you, I really wanted to like Titans. I felt the same way after the finale as I did when BvS ended. Numb. I was caught in the negative zone between really wanting, almost needing, to like it because I love and support DC all the way, and realizing this was just poorly produced and is kinda destroying the image of these amazing characters. You want a good Teen Titans show? Watch Young Justice. They know how to treat the characters like real people.

@@worldweaver2691 The '03 cartoon had an excellent depiction of Robin dealing with his obsessive nature and striking out as his own hero; however, the lack of Batman and the fact that the characters didn't age all that much meant there wasn't an arc directly comparing Dick to Batman. '03 couldn't show a time when he wanted to be Batman. All the same, that wasn't what the show was trying to say, anyways.

I like how Rachel treated her real mother who she just had barely met like she was there for here her whole life, while treating her dead, adoptive parent, who actually cared for her, like no one. She even calls her by her name.

At the end of every episode I felt like I just didn't care about what happened because it was like the characters didn't give a shit or something...ya know?

Let me start of with one simple remark, I enjoy watching your work - the main reasons being that there is a high level of competence, love and ,dare I say it, thought put into them. I have watched your TITANS videos twice now, once before I watched the series and once after I watched the entirety of Season 1. Your criticism is spot on and yes, I did spot most of the things you mentioned in the video. Granted I didn't understand why exactly some things felt off to me, but now I know. In fact the whole reason why I put off watching TITANS was because of your two videos. To clarify - I binge watched the show and I enjoyed it. If a friend asks me if he should watch it my answer would be "Yeah, go ahead. There are flaws but you won't really notice them.". So in a way you can say that your videos helped me understand that what I watch doesn't have to be a masterpiece or anything that comes close for me to enjoy it. Shocking, I know! But the thought of me watching yet another poor interpretation of the DC universe was too much to bear. However, TITANS manages to well... not suck. At least for me. Your points are valid, hell they are even solid, so I don't see the point of arguing with you, first and foremost because I agree with you on almost every mark. Hopefully Season 2 brings us something better, though judging by the thumbnail and tittle of the video it's going to be more of the same. Anyway, thanks for the work you put in! I agree 100%. In fact, making something “dark” has no impact if there isn’t anything “light” to compare it to. If we can’t see the genuine good out there then we are left to assume that the tone they set is just that worlds’ normal. Especially in a show where it can be partly boiled down to “beat the bad guys” you need to be able to see how there could be a better place to go once the protagonists succeed.

"A bad deed does not erase the good, neither the good deed erase the bad." A killer can wear both labels, a killer and a hero. One who weighed lives on a scale that perhaps wasn't his to weigh. A cop killing someone is different from a masked vigilante doing the same. They have the trust of the city and the backing of the people to do what is right for them. Batman is unstable by his own admission and refuses to kill due to it. Nothing bad can be erased from history, but that doesn't mean we can't acknowledge the good. Batman in those movies weighed lives callously and deserves more hate than acknowledgment

I mean In the movie under the red hood they show Jason progressing to a bad person within Batman’s flashbacks. Like when he first put on the uniform and was a real kid he showed happiness then it goes forward to show him years later breaking a “drug dealing pimp” back. That was progress through jason. He changed. Then when he came back he was still human. He was a man who killed and hurt people but he did it because he felt like his death was unimportant like Batman could continue without him. The two scenes from under the red hood that shows him as a human was the time when he told the drug dealers not to give drugs to kids and when he went on his monologue about how it didn’t matter about everybody else he just wanted Batman to kill the joker. Jason Todd is a complex character. But they just sign him off as a bad guy who is power hungry that’s not him. He’s supposed to be a kid. He was supposed to have character as a kid who could laugh but still showed he had his own problems which grew worse with time. But in titans they don’t see him as a complex character they just see him as another character they can add to the shows crowded cast
yeah my favorite versions of Jason are the ones where he starts off enthusiastic and full of belief in the morals Batman represents but over time slowly devolves into a cynic who's eaten alive by the demons of his past as he increasingly becomes more and more disillusioned and frustrated with his mentor and his methods, it's a character arc that never fails to break my heart

I agree with ya, but then again instead of complaining we should try to help them developing this series so it's not set as a never to do project since it got terrible taste to us. Can we complain yes but you must know how it could be beneficial for us for one day to actually help the DC into making our favorite characters.

I feel like what felt the most off for me about titans was (as you said) they didn't express them as people. I grew up watching the Teen Titans animated show and what always hit with me was how they were all outcasts. Not just to society but to each other. like the episode where beast boy runs away from the group because no one wants to hang out with him, he turns into a dog to get some love and gets rejected because he's a green dog. He's rejected from society because he is a green boy, a boy who just wants normal relationships. We could identify with all the characters because we saw parts of our selves in them. It honestly hurt to never feel connected to the titans in the show (especially beast boy for me). Maybe I just have rose tinted glasses for my favorite kids show, but I sincerely hope that you (at hitop) create something from a fans perspective because you honestly seem to understand why I loved the characters I did. I thought I was going crazy, since every single fan said this show was amazing, the critics say it was good, everyone said "oh, just the trailers were bad". And aside of the Doom Patrol episode, I was NEVER invested in the characters or could care less about the plot. To the point of give up the show in about the 6th episode. And I thought I was just a cynical asshole. But after watching this, thank you, this essay is everything I needed to know. Specially since it really shows that you really love this characters and DC Comics. And I just HATE when people get biassed just for a bunch of Easter eggs and say that is the best thing ever made, and threat others like "fake fans" for not being on board with the plot or characters. (Which you know, IS WHAT MADE A GOOD STORY). So again, *thank you* for all of this work you do. I really hope you can make that Red Hood Show, you sound really excited about it!

Batman Versus Superman is one of the worst comic book inspired movie I have ever, EVER had the misfortune of watching. The problem with deconstructing a hero is that you have to have that hero be his or her optimistic phase first. We never got that with Superman, Snyder jumped straight into broody, dark Superman straight away. Then gave him some of the stupidest, most hypocritical motivation I have ever seen ((He is too rough on criminals! *Tackles a man THROUGH A WALL AT HIGH SPEED*)) with Batmans being just as bad ((I mean I know he's a good guy now but like, if he ever turned it would be terrible so we need to kill him NOW instead of then.)) and then made the entire ordeal boring as hell. So you have two unlikable main characters with terrible motivations you can't get behind having a pissing contest until they discover that *Gasp* their mothers had the same name! And then we get the most unearned and stupid death in cinema history ((...the death of Superman and then the follow ups were some of my favorite comics so this one might have hit a bit on the personal level)) when he could have literally just HANDED THE DAMN SPEAR TO DIANNA and let her do it but no, HEROIC, UNNEEDED SACRIFICE!

YOUNG JUSTICE SUCKS! I had to try that show after all the talk about it... it is disjointed, episodic and boring. Each episode is a new story making each peril seem less important. Dick wants to become his own person but doesn't know what that is, Kory wants her memories back, Rachel wants to be cared for, and Gar wants excitement but also just to be a kid. They all wanted to help Rachel. I understand what people don't like about this show, but I definitely got it.

Hawk and Dove became full time super heroes after saving their Father, before Don's death in Crisis whihc was like 20 years later... even then not till Dawn's 'Death' in Armaggedon 2001 Hawk and Dove were one of the few heroes that had Both sets of their parents still alive and them being on good terms with them.

How anyone can watch the videos you put out and then accuse you of not being a DC fan is beyond me. The amount of care you put into every video is incredible. You give a damn about this, you know what you're talking about.
Your video about Batman is one of my absolute favorites on all of TH-cam. It's truly a great video and it makes an amazing point. To see something like that and then tear the person who made it down? It's ridiculous.
We as fans should absolutely give a damn about the media we consume. It's not enough that we get teasers and Easter eggs for stuff just for the sake of them existing. I don't want to be sold on every new character, I don't want a world or universe that exists solely to prop up the next character in whatever series is about to come out.
The reason why the MCU works how it does is because they had to take their time and be ginger with these things. They couldn't just throw the avengers out there. You can't just throw a Titans series out there and then secretly sneak a dozen other characters into the mix like a mother sneaking peas into dinner so her kids will eat their veggies.
Make the Titans great. Give them their time to shine. There will be time for all those other characters later. Titans, and all of our other media, shouldn't just be "okay" or "good," it needs to be great.

As if "criticizing" something were a bad thing. If you're watching this video and just seeing it as mindless hate, then that's your inability to parse through what's being said. No one would go to the lengths that HiTop does to critique something they absolutely despise and hate. DC making mistakes when it comes to live action media is not a new thing and being a fan of DC can certainly be tiring when you just want them to finally get it right.
Titans isn't good, but it can be better. That's the main takeaway from this video. If you still think he just hates DC despite him going out of his way to address that and try to prove it wrong, then there's not much else anyone can do for you. We critique the things we love, the things we know can be better. Mindlessly consuming media because it's "okay" and has to do with the things we like isn't and shouldn't be enough.

From what I understand, it's like they're trying to switch the characterizations of Dick and Jason. Jason was the one with the violence problem, not Dick. That's the whole reason they killed Jason off in the first place (because his brash and violent nature wasn't resonating with audiences) and he came back as Red Hood,. Why are they trying to have two Jason Todds? It's a bizarre decision to make when you plan on having them both in the same show. Dick never hates Batman. On the contrary, Dick's whole thing was that he wanted more than anything to be just like Batman, but just wasn't - thus his arch being that he needed to become his own hero (Nightwing). Batman was more than just the hero of Gotham to Dick, he was *his* hero - his father. I don't understand why they're trying to change that or why they're trying to paint Batman in such a bad light. Batman has problems, sure, (I mean he dresses as a giant bat to beat up criminals every night - not exactly the picture of sanity) but he's still a hero - his intentions are still good. He takes on the many different Robins not to try to turn them into mindless crime-fighting machines as the show suggests, but to give orphaned children something to fight for - a purpose - the only way he knows how. Batman is flawed, damaged even, but he is by no means a villain so I don't understand the tendency in recent media to portray him as such (killing people in BVS and now Titans). For being the focus of the whole show, Dick's arch and motivations are so at odds with the spirit of the actual character that its baffling. Sorry for the mini-essay here but these are some of my favorite characters in the whole of DC so to see them butchered like this is just...well tragic.

I miss TAS depiction of Batman, someone that is not perfect and has a lot of conflict with the world around him and even within him, but at the end of the day he does everything he can to make the world a better place, innocent and villains alike.

I’m going to spit a hot take here: I think Batman is more naive then Superman. Now, this obviously varies, but Batman is so attached to his idealist core values, that he stands by them even more that Superman would.
This video essay made me care about these characters more than a season comprised of 11 episodes. Never stop doing what you did with this video. Point out the flaws in something you love so it can be it's best version! I Loved this video
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who lost all hope with episode 7. The explosion scene was so ridiculous and disjointed. Also thank you for pointing out the Jason Todd problem. The scene with him trying to start that bar fight was all they needed. Robin harassing an ordinary person and wanting to maim them is more than enough. Him breaking the back of a police officer is waaaaayyyy too much, red hood doesn’t even do that shit.

Jason didn't murder anyone in his short time as Robin. Sure he had anger issues and went pretty hard on criminals but so did Batman in that time. I agree that this side of him was shown too early but I still like the scene thanks to the choreography

I'm with you on this. I'm glad someone else is trying to make DC realize that there are real fans of theirs that care about the characters they created and are exhausted at the content they're delivering to fans that just can't support them anymore. It IS heartbreaking to watch Titans... Every ... Single ... episode. I enjoyed a total of ONE episode. Doom Patrol. I thought that showed the light at the end of the tunnel, and then they thrust headlong back into the tunnel. I couldn't make myself like or care about any of these murdering A-Holes that they tried to convince me were super heroes. Each of them gave us nothing to "explore" as a viewer. They're entire persona was on their sleeve. The writers seemed to want to tell us, immediately, how damaged they are instead of letting us like the character before showing us what was lurking below the surface. The episodes were monotone, noting like their 80s comic book. These guys are suppose to have a humor about them that masked their damaged history. Any one of these had a backstory that would make a hell of an entire season to explore. I'm so disappointed as a lifelong fan of DC, and a casual fan of Marvel. I'm now a devoted fan of Marvel and a disappointed, use-to-be fan of DC. I can't bring myself to buy anything related to DC until they show that they can go back to their source material and give us great story writing again. If anyone had asked me when I was a kid, who my favorite super hero was, I would've said Robin, because of the Teen Titans, and now, I'm afraid I'll never see a TV or cinematic version of my favorite team and favorite heroes. This will either be seen as a success, and we'll be treated to more of the same, or it will be seen as a failure and the fault of the source. Either way, I don't see DC and Warner Brothers changing direction anytime soon. There's a faint glimpse of hope with Shazam! of all places.
I liked "Doom Patrol" and "Together" those were the only episodes that felt like a Titans show and not "Dick Grayson and whatever tf DC wants to do this week"

I loved the first two seasons of Young Justice. I signed up for DC Direct because I wanted to support more like Young Justice. I’ll sign back up in June so I can watch Outsiders and maybe stay on for Harley Quin and Doom Patrol.
I'd consider myself a DC fan but not overall a Teen Titans fan. At least, not until the show came out. That's most likely why I enjoyed it so much.

I'm with you on the death scene of Dawn's mother and Hank's brother. When it happened, I actually immediately rewound and watched it again, because I wasn't sure I understood what just happened. That shot was just the worst idea.
You put your all into this series and it shows. Hopefully DC/Warner Bros pay attention to how viewers of these videos have agreed with your points. We want to love DC. We want to indulge in GOOD stories. But we’ve been burned so many times it’s become redundant at this point. I hope they learn from your points. Great job on the videos.

There’s so many adaptations of these beloved characters out there that don’t do justice to the heart, love, and legacy that make DC so great. It’s thanks to passionate fans like you speaking your mind that keeps the hope alive for a higher standard. We should care, and thank you for spreading the message. Who knows if you’ll ever get that Red Hood show made, but I do know that you’re going to do great things in the film world. And it’s because you care. They also set up a crazy cultist who wanted to kill Raven to prevent her from summoning Trigon. That implied there was an anti-Trigon faction out there. And I thought the twist was going to be that Raven was sent into hiding to keep her safe from the anti-Trigon cult, and that the anti-Trigon cult was bigger and more powerful than the Trigon worshippers. But they just dropped that.

They've had CGI images that look hella-fake when left on screen for too long but never something that viscerally grabs your attention like seeing two matchbox cars slam into each other and bounce like nothing happened. It's a quick scene and has numerous ways to edit or shoot around it, where as say Gorilla Grogg has to be on screen for periods at a time with numerous variables occurring over a scene.

Robin's arc is literally: I'm dark, i don't want to be. And then he literally goes: I wanna be dark. In the finale
I don't understand why Trigon is the main villain of the arc about Dick becoming Nightwing. Trigon is Raven's archenemy, she is the protagonist and she should be the one who ultimately defeats Trigon.
If they wanted to make an arc about Dick, why not use Deathstroke as the main antagonist? Or Ravager? The producers said DC doesn't have an embargo on these characters after all, why not use them? Deathstroke is a lot of the time an evil Batman (Although I always saw him more like evil Captain America). There is a reason why Dick becomes Nightwing In The Judas Contract in the comics; Deathstroke/Terra is a twisted parallel to Batman/Robin.
Cande Escalante I think the reason they don’t want to use death stroke or any super major characters that have already been used is because they don’t want to get in the way of potentially crossing over and conjoining with either the cw or dc extended universe

I say "unfortunately" because, like you, I really wanted to like Titans. I felt the same way after the finale as I did when BvS ended. Numb. I was caught in the negative zone between really wanting, almost needing, to like it because I love and support DC all the way, and realizing this was just poorly produced and is kinda destroying the image of these amazing characters. You want a good Teen Titans show? Watch Young Justice. They know how to treat the characters like real people.

@@worldweaver2691 The '03 cartoon had an excellent depiction of Robin dealing with his obsessive nature and striking out as his own hero; however, the lack of Batman and the fact that the characters didn't age all that much meant there wasn't an arc directly comparing Dick to Batman. '03 couldn't show a time when he wanted to be Batman. All the same, that wasn't what the show was trying to say, anyways.

Let me start of with one simple remark, I enjoy watching your work - the main reasons being that there is a high level of competence, love and ,dare I say it, thought put into them. I have watched your TITANS videos twice now, once before I watched the series and once after I watched the entirety of Season 1. Your criticism is spot on and yes, I did spot most of the things you mentioned in the video. Granted I didn't understand why exactly some things felt off to me, but now I know. In fact the whole reason why I put off watching TITANS was because of your two videos.
To clarify - I binge watched the show and I enjoyed it. If a friend asks me if he should watch it my answer would be "Yeah, go ahead. There are flaws but you won't really notice them.". So in a way you can say that your videos helped me understand that what I watch doesn't have to be a masterpiece or anything that comes close for me to enjoy it. Shocking, I know! But the thought of me watching yet another poor interpretation of the DC universe was too much to bear. However, TITANS manages to well... not suck. At least for me. Your points are valid, hell they are even solid, so I don't see the point of arguing with you, first and foremost because I agree with you on almost every mark.
Hopefully Season 2 brings us something better, though judging by the thumbnail and tittle of the video it's going to be more of the same.
