    I've been playing bass for 32 years. I started my early days on round wound (medium gauge), but I moved to flat wound. I find that rounds die out faster (oils from fingers, constant stretching from bends and tuning). Once they lost that bright punch I was just done.
    I've tried probably nearly every major string manufacturer on the market (GHS Boomers, EB Slinky, D'Addario, Blue Steel etc.). Eventually I found RotoSound flat wound and a new world of sound opened for me. Even as they age the warmth never really dies out. To my ears they are silky and have such a beautiful bottom end that carries well with drums. Oh and Sweetwater is the only place I'll get my strings from.

    First of all, DUDE! You are the FUNK! Love seeing and hearing you grooving to that DOPE backing track, (on this and the other 4 videos of the How to Buy a Bass You'll Love" Series)! As a beginning bassist, I would ahve SO MANY QUESTIONS, but, to stay on topic, the only thing I'd say I noticed and makes me wonder how the "strings" really made a difference is, you're playing the different strings on different basses, all which would have their own distinct tonal adjustments, so, I'm not sure this video really makes the point you're trying to get across. But, again, being new, I could be wrong here. But, since tone IS also attributed to the bass itself, I do get, to some degree, why you went with different basses for each string example. I really need to listen to this again with my headphones on though, to try to hear the real distinctions - but, from your descriptions, (which probably tainted my view a little), and the reading I did on the Sweetwater site before getting to these videos, then my own personal taste, I'm feeling like, flatwounds and a MAYBE even a short scale bass is the ticket for me, though I liked the flatwound sound of the example you played prior to switching to the short scale. So, a couple of quick (related) questions: 1) Since the short-scale is considered something "less than" 34 inches, and since the saddles on some bridges have a forward and rearward adjustment, then, couldn't you effectively turn a long scale bass, into a short-scale bass, by simply moving the saddles forward then re-tuning? and 2) Do you have videos, where you're playing this same song, on the same basses, with no the identical tone setup used in the demonstration, but using the different string types, so one could hear the difference, sort of, apples-to-apples?

    um, what's the point of comparing strings with different pickups ?

    • @therandomman6647
      @therandomman6647 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some pickups have a more capable cold tone and having that option can make better use of the strings, and gives more tone options as the begin to go dead

    I recently started playing half-round strings, and talk about a best-of-both-worlds scenario. The feel and some of the warmth of flats but still enough top-end to cut through a mix like rounds. Definitely going to be playing these strings for a while.

    For beginners, I wish you had mentioned, "winding length," when talking about the scale of the bass. Two different basses can have the same scale length, while having a different winding length. A Hofner violin bass, for example. The winding length, ball to silk, (or taper), has to be longer than a Fender Mustang short scale bass. Even though the scale length on both is 30". Just a friendly tip.

    Whats the best string set for medium scale 4 string bass?

    I disagree about the 35" 5 strings, only ever seen standard scale 5 strings even when looking for long scale ones, but 35" scale is common to find on 6 strings like my ESP

      @@imaginarytube I think those Rotosound BLACK NYLON bass strings might be close to the black TAPE wound bass strings? I didn't know you can use Nylon strings on a Hofner bass or any bass that has FRETS
