Citizen Kane pioneered a lot of new camera tricks. What are some of your favorite cinematic innovations you've noticed in movies?

I love the shot in The Life Aquatic where Steve Zissou just walks us through every set they use for the rest of the movie.

The opening scene in CHARLIE'S ANGELS (2000) where the camera shows us the airplane in the distance. It then moves closer to the airplane, goes inside it, then moves to someone sitting in a seat. The first time I saw that I realized it was taken from the scene in CITIZEN KANE (1941) where the reporter meets Susan for the first time at the nightclub.

Great review of Citizen Kane. I have never seen the movie before but it was fascinating to see how they were the first to use so many videography techniques. Loved the education in movie roots and history. Keep it up Lamphouse!

My pick for the greatest film of all time and it’s not even from Hollywood…Sergei Bondarchuk’s “War and Peace”. This is as film that could never be remade without spending a billion in production costs.

It's beautifully filmed and innovated numerous important techniques. But a story about the "hard life" of a man who wastes more money than most people ever dream of hardly invokes empathy. I WANT to like this movie. But every time I try to watch it, I have to struggle to stay awake. I generally prefer classic B&W movies to modern movies, but this one just bores me to sleep.

This is the usual "arguing about definitions" thing that's not that interesting. Critics like to define good as *influential*, and Kane is clearly that. But most people define good as *enjoyable*, and for most people Kane no longer is.

i just watched it for the first time since hearing how great it is for the last 20 yrs.. and boy, i missed on greatness. It's definitely a joy to watch for the way some scenes told the whole story in one shot.
