  • A playthrough of a beta version of Street Fighter II' Turbo for the Sega Genesis. This version was likely by produced by Capcom sometime in 1993.
Played through as Zangief on the hardest difficulty setting (though I don't think the difficulty setting actually works in this one, so take that for what it's worth).
This beta version of Street Fighter 2 Turbo has quite a few neat differences from the officially released Genesis version of Street Fighter II' Champion Edition. Probably the most immediate and obvious difference is the sound: this beta features different mixes of the original tunes and makes heavy use of PCM samples for percussion, whereas the official Genesis game reserves the PCM playback for effects and voices. I actually much prefer the sound in this version. The drum tracks and the effects do occasionally clip and cancel each other out, but it isn't often noticeable and the drums sound awesome - even if they are way too loud and heavy. I like the cheesy quality that the overdone samples give the music. It's also got the sped-up "near death" music that is missing in the other home ports.
Many of the voice samples are missing, but that's probably because it's a beta (and thus, not a finished game), and its running off of a 16megabit ROM (which is significantly smaller than the official SF2'CE's 24megabit cart), which of course limits room for things like digitized audio.
The graphics look pretty good here too - like the audio, they certainly are different than the official Genesis version. The color palettes are different in many places, and the animation is different. The characters all have their full idle stance animations intact, as well as their separate forward and back walking animation cycles. It's amazing how much smoother it looks with those cycles left in.
The intro and the ending are missing, which is to be expected in a pre-release like this, but the gameplay elements are all in place and function exactly as they should - the game engine feels all but finished, with the timings, special moves, move priorities all being present and acting as you'd expect them to in a final product.
I really like this one - I actually prefer this beta over the official SF2'CE port. The sound quality is FAR better in this one (the official release one's PCM quality was embarrassingly poor), the graphics and animation are better, and my favorite difference: did anyone else notice how completely creepy Zangief's portrait is? Whatever they did when they scaled that graphic made his eye somehow terrifying. I feel like he's going to kill me with that look. That's why I picked him to play as :D
Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention. Even though it's called Turbo, it's not Turbo. It's missing all of the Turbo moves and features. It's a different version of SF2'CE.

This beta is surprisingly different from the SF2 that was actually released on the Genesis, but it's very good. I way prefer the music and sound in this one, and it plays just as well as the official release. Fun novelty, this one is - worth firing up on a flash cart if you have one!

I prefer this version to the original genesis port of championship edition, it plays more similar to the snes port while being close to the arcade version. I just downloaded this beta yesterday, plays much better than chamionship edition on chenesis too.

this was an arcade from zero to genesis that didnt like sega. The released version is in fact a snes port to genesis.

I can live with the missing sounds as this version sounds so much better! Crazy they would just trash a 90% complete version.

This version has two music tracks for each stage; The first track the normal stage theme, The second track the stage theme in the key of panic; Like in the arcade game.
The released version just have the normal stage themes and speeds up when someone is about to get KO'd; Like in the SNES games.
Super Street Fighter II, the music tracks like in the former don't change, the tempo in the latter doesn't increase... in the first round.

The vocals actually sound a bit better in this version. The music is bass heavy

The backgrounds are very similar to an early build that was shown in stills in a Game Pro magazine back in the day. I wish I could remember which one

Why didn't they go with this version? Make a few graphical tweaks, add in the voices for the countries, and add the engineers and it's practically ARCADE PERFECT!! This beta shits on the SNES version and I love the SNES version!!

I guess this beta version didn't have the endings yet, since the ending is just Zangief's face looming menacingly over the other characters.

Es HERMOSO ese sonido del haduken. En general las voces habladas no suenan tan robóticas como la versión final, y ese haduken es la mejor prueba . Capcom comprimió demasiado el sonido y suena muy feo en la versión final.

I love how the soundtrack goes hard as fuck with the drum samples and even gets a little funky with them at times. It’s too bad this soundtrack didn’t make it into the final version because it pisses all over every other version that ever released, and I’m an SNES guy. Also cool to see that this was the only version that finished the sunset gradient on guile’s stage all the way to yellow. I also just realized what a weird detail that was to notice.

There is a mistake in the description. You say that the final reserves PCM for SFX, but it uses sampled percussion as well. Maybe you are mixing it up with super?

Capcom would have been better off with these graphics and sound for the final release of the game. Street Fighter II’ Special Champion Edition turned out pretty bad for the Genesis. It looked like Vaseline was covering the screen and the sound was tiny and scrambled. I liked the Super NES port of Street Fighter II’ Turbo much better. It wasn’t until Street Fighter Collection 2 came out on the PlayStation in 1998 that we got an arcade perfect conversion of these great fighting games!

gedaman The PC version of super turbo is near perfect. The sound in SCE was near arcade perfect so I don't know what you are talking about.

The sound issues aren't the samples themselves, but the Z80 in the Genesis being configured wrong. There's a ROM hack that re-does the Z80 instructions and the game sounds way better.

Interesting how this one is champion edition with the turbo name, and the final is turbo with the champion edition name.
