My father drove the Flying Scotsman in Scotland when I was a child in the 1950’s and 60 ‘s. This wa during the Steam Age before diesel engines took over. I loved steam trains and have happy memories of running along Kings Cross station in London, to catch The Flying Scotsman to go home to Edinburgh.
The Flying Scotsman was also the title given to Eric Liddell, the Scottish Olympic track star of the 1924 Paris Olympics. He's featured in the movie Chariots of Fire.
I seen the Flying Scotsman when she crossed Australia. I was able to get up close to her and hm her sheer size was awesome. I felt very lucky to be living in a town she stopped in while crossing the country. ❤
Driver even gave it a blast of the whistle , so he Top man for doing that for camera. What A Amazing piece of outstanding & long lasting steam engineering. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻 💚
Towing a diesel, just in case? My in laws were railway. Father a guard out of Euston and brother a fireman out of Camden. I’m 84 and this brought back so many memories . Like getting smuts in your eyes if you put your head out of a window and the smell of the smoke. Love the Geordie as well.
There's nothing like the anticipation of waiting for a train. The reward: for a brief, glorious moment the tracks come alive as the snaking parade of coaches guided by a head of steam cuts its way through the landscape to its important destination.
And when I was a child we lived in West Hampstead London, with the same London to Scotland main line at the bottom of our garden - and I must have seen this train go by many times - I used to sit on top of our shed & watch them coming & going during the summer months - I was more boy than girl really ! I'm 83 now, been in the US for more than 40 years but this was a nice video to recall my childhood days - thank you !
Me and my brother lived near the railway line in Crewe, so we would wave whenever the Flying Scotsman flew by us. We started this when I was four in 1952.
I enjoyed the waiting more than the train itself Jimmy! And I'm a retired steam loco driver from Wollongong NSW. Pt Kembla steelworks. Brought back some memories aye.
See if Paddy wasn't a decent old proper villain/criminal he wouldn't of done a nice video on an old Train he would of put a brick on the track like a normal Geordie you meet in Durham and derailed the fooking thing..
Being born in 1945, I grew up with steam trains, in the 1950s I'd be taken to Paddington Station and put in the guard's van for the trip to Swansea or Wrexham. My dad-built tunnels and one job was doubling the tunnels online through Hadley to Potters Bar on the Kings Cross to Scotland line. Steam trains that arrived at Kings Cross would uncouple; another engine would couple up at the end of the train for the run to Scotland. The uncoupled unit would then push the train as far as Hadley station and drop back when the train had gathered enough speed. The chap across the road was a stoker and worked out of the Euston/St Pancras steam yard and I would sometimes ride with him on his motorcycle to pick up his pay packet if pay day came on his day off, so his Mrs. could go shopping. I joined working on enlarging a tunnel at Chalk Farm that ran under the Round House at Camden Town. This was used by steam trains taking empty carriages into Euston. The larger diameter was needed for electrification works. Since then, I've worked on building new Metro/Tube tunnels in London, Cairo and Kuala Lumper plus the Taiwan High Speed Rail. Tunnels not only paid well I travelled to lots of places around the world. Thanks for posting and stay safe.
Edenborough or Inverness are two of em. But I was talking about the extra shunter and the new parallel tunnels, Not the arrival station. I did visit Scotland once to meet an elephant that was performing at Cupar. The intended purpose of the meet up was to dress the elephant in diving gear though none was available, so plastic bowls were used held together with a canvas strap and another strap that went around the elephant's head. Air tanks were made from plastic down pipe some gauges and a length of crinkle plastic pipe. A dagger scabbard was made again using black plastic sheeting and a wooden handle stuck to the end. My part in this was to supple a car recovery trailer for the elephant to stand on for a photo shoot to advertise Land Rovers 110 new V8 engined option. Sadly, the Land Rover did not turn up, so we all went back home to England.@@stanleybuchan4610
where are you guys from. Blaydon Bridge or over to Hexham way, looks like the A69 in the back ground, Hexham Lad in exile here, great to see you, up the TOON!
Such an amazing, belta old steam train and it's true what they say, they don't make them like this any more. I took a video of it myself as it passed through Newcastle Central Station, I only wish I was in a lovely place out in the Northumberland countryside like where you are and video it going along full belt instead of getting it going pretty slow through the station.

Paddy, you should have got The Bull to film it and you get your Mavic Mini Pro 3 up and got it from the air. I done it (well tried) last time it came through but loads of kids from this family came all around me pulling me arm down to look at footage...in them few seconds of trying to get the kids parents to get the kids back I forgot to press record. I was livid. I'd been there ages with me girlfriend because it was pulled up at Prudhoe for 20 minutes. Really I should have found a spot where no one could put me off and flown the drone over to where I first was.
Outstanding video did you catch the old girl on the way back. What was the 47 number on the back locomotive where’s this location brilliant place to train spot, it’s kept at the National Railway Museum in York.
first steam engine to officially clock a 100 miles per hour in 1934 and then mallard broke that record with a 126 mile per hour run in 1938 if i remember correctly and that record still stands today.
THAT WAS AWESOME
HOPEFULLY THERE WILL
BE MORE OF THIS 😃......
THAT WOULD BE COOL

@@DogsWallop I'll always be a kid when it comes to trains!
You can’t skip to 6.30 for the train. Everything up to there is a waste of time.
That's definitely worth the waiting time for the man with his dog for a glimpse of the passing train 😅
And listening to almost incomprehensible Scots.
Amazing Video ,Hello from Scotland 🏴❤️

Thanks Paddy. This was a good video.
Isn't it kind of the venerable loco to give that tatty diesel a tow home!!!!!!😂😂😂
You might be waiting for one Flying Scotsman but you won't have three turn up together!

You guys are always specific with the England bit, eg Kings Cross, but always vague with the Scotland bit. Whereabouts in Scotland do you mean?

Great to see the man keeping the dog warm for so long.
Tootsies conroys a geezer 💯
Also holding the dog and keeping it from getting too close to the crossing. With that weak whistle the dog probably would not have heard the approach.
And vice versa!
Not bad for 1923, 100 years old this year.
I actually stood on the front of this as a child back in the 70's, have the photo, would never be allowed today. Love steam, still the best
Thanks for that!
I’m in Australia, is that a Geordie accent? I saw the “Scotchman” when she was here! Cheers.

I fist seen the flying Scotsman was in San Francisco on the docks. I would love to see The Scotsman running in person.
Fast for a steam train Paddy . It must have been the fastest in its time.
It was the first to reach 100 mph but the fastest is A4 pacific 4468 Mallard which reached 126mph.
first steam engine to officially clock a 100 miles per hour in 1934 and then mallard broke that record with a 126 mile per hour run in 1938 if i remember correctly and that record still stands today.
