The only normal(non-business) talk the Jaeger brothers ever had was about Mikasa and man what a treat it was to see them share a normal conversation and Zeke being the big brother he wanted to be, advising his little brother on this woman's feelings towards him. Gotta love Eren-Zeke dynamic

Yeah, we need to see it from a birds eye view to see different sides of war and how selfishness and hatred and lack of communication and lack of negotiation.
I think we can go towards erwins question to eren in s1 epi 15.
"What do you think the enemy is?"
It's as if the enemy aren't titans or outside world or any particular entity, it's just us. We are the enemy of ourselves.
The paradisians especially jeagerist act more or less in a similar way the marleyans act towards eldians. And marleyans act like that because eldians from past acted like that against the marleyans and world in general for 1900 years.
Everyone has selfishness and the need to survive, everyone has to make the choices and the part of what the show is trying to tell is that can we move forward and fulfill our desires while also acting within the system that is established?
For example we might say that a system like democracy has a lot of flaws, but it's a big improvement and much better than the government systems that exist in AoT world.
The goal should be improvement, perfection won't exist but if we the living focus on working for creating better systems and improved systems only then we can create more stability.
Since the world is chaotic, there will be again fall and thus cruelty but again we need to see as humans where we went wrong and then again start, but this time we make up for the mistakes of past and not repeat it.
Survival is important but how you survive is even more important. Morals, systems and values will fall but it is duty of the humans to again bring them back and fight for those. Only such time tested morals systems and values help to create long term stability.
Some people even die but won't participate in the cruelty of killing innocent people. It's a choice they made.
Some people make a choice to kill innocents for their own survival.
But the thing with the latter is that then this becomes a precedent and other people follow it and thus killing innocent to avoid future conflict becomes a norm and thus cruelty increases.
The point is that, our desires and our emotions and our fears are natural but only if they are the deciding factor for any choice then it isn't really freedom because they change from time to time and thus there exists no moral or practical frame through which we can make decisions.
There exists no standards that decide how we make choices.
In our real world we have a lot of international organizations and codes that tell us what is a war crime and what isn't and many other things.
The implementation isn't as strong as we expect it to be but it's much better than just not having any such system.
The goal is to improve and include every world nation in this exercise so that everyone is kept accountable as well.
      What do you think?

The tragedy of this episode is that everything has been set in stone from start and thus whatever future he saw in medal ceremony happened because mikasas answer was also destined to be family. Eren only asked this question to mikasa because he knew that he was becoming the same monster that he and mikasa used to despise. He only asked this question because he was self loathing for the future he saw and wondered why would mikasa care about a piece of shit like him?
Is it just because she was saved by eren? Like he was saved by historia and thus it is just gratitude and friendship.
Or is it more close as if they are family?
For mikasa, it was gratitude as well but more so it was her trauma to not lose eren.
She has romantic feelings which is more than just he saving her or being a family. But she was confused about her feelings because she herself doesn't know if it is romantic love that she has or is it just that eren is her emotional anchor in life for which she would sacrfice herself to protect.
Eren asks this to really understand the nature of their relationship and how would a good person like mikasa care about a person like him?
When he realized it is more than just him saving her or him being a family to her, and realized that it is just love.
But he wanted mikasa to live a long life ahead. He knew he didn't have more than 4 years and thus he just couldn't be in a relationship. His mental psyche was very bad and self-loathing made him believe he doesn't deserve mikasas love and that she should live a good long life and throw away that scarf.
Mikasa wondering if things could have changed doesn't matter because whatever she is doing is leading to the deterministic future that exists and that is set in stone.
      It's thus a tragedy

@@shubhamvyas3192 I took it as Eren's last attempt to change his destiny, that he was crying beforehand and he desperately wanted to change the future. That maybe if Mikasa professed her love for him, he'd instead let Paradis/Eldia fall and run away with her for the rest of his life.
But it can't happen, because this is a story and a destiny Eren manifested for himself. He formed a time loop/destiny of his own future. In my theory, Eren isn't just the Attack Titan, every Attack Titan is Eren. That him obtaining Ymir's power let him influence the history of Eldians and gave the Attack Titan it's power to be influenced by it's future inheritors.
That he created the entire path that would allow him to be born, inherit the titans, then use them to create the path. He created this, and he never imagined he would become the devil the world feared.

By the way, regarding the “set in stone” aspect, remember when Grisha said to Zeke “from now on, only Eren will get his wish”? That moment, timing wise, was basically in E1xS1 of the anime, so Grisha is more or less confirming that events from as early as around ep1 going forward are taking place according to Eren’s will. Just like Eren reiterates in this very episode again, “everything happens by my will”.

    • @Cripplified
      @Cripplified 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

I do believe literally this entire timeline and story is because Eren succeeded in obtaining Ymir's power. He manifested all of this to be destined to happen. The entire Attack Titans' power to see the future inheritors memories is only because Eren created that power to ensure he is born and gains the power to even create this weird time loop of destiny.
Eren even gave his younger self that "long dream" of the future, before he ever had the Attack Titan. Asking Mikasa when her hair got so long (because he saw future Mikasa in that dream). He didn't quite understand what it was or why he was crying, but it's because future Eren is pained forcing himself to have this life be his destiny he can't avoid.

it is an important factor of the story which is officially true but probably more than 90 percent of fandom don't even know is:
AOT's story happens in a Deterministic universe which means everything which will happen in the future is already and was always set in stone from the start!! it is even mentioned multiple times!! simply if someone even knew the future in aot's universe they can't , they can't change it because deterministic means the future happened because of the nature and actions of the character in the story so knowing future doesn't mean shit you can't change it, it will happen for sure in aot's universe though we don't know if its same for our universe too!!

Honestly introducing hard determinism into this story was a bad decision from Isayama. AoT is a story that constantly emphasises the moral gravity of people's decisions, and that only works if people in the story have moral agency. So inserting determinism just completely shits all over that.
But it still doesn't even hold a candle to... certain other decisions that were made in the ending in terms of pure unadulterated horse shit.

And timeline makes their decisions even more valuable, and it's not about "oh, shit, i checked the future and it's bad, let's do some mumbo jumbo and revert it all". Not only that, but it's a reference to the "hanged man" tarot card.
"In a general context, The Hanged Man Tarot card indicates that you are in a situation that you are not happy with. You may be feeling like you are stuck in a rut or trapped in a situation or frame of mind that is not making you happy but you have the power to release yourself. This may involve walking away from the situation or simply changing your perspective on it. The Hanged Man may also signify that you may be facing a dilemma and are unsure of what path to take."
Eren is trapped in a situation by the mindset of "moving forward", and this is represented in the appearance of his titan, like a puppet on strings being strung towards ending the world. Yet he is there of his own volition, his own choices leading him to this situation. It suggests he is under the illusion of control of the situation, and we see this in his dialogue "this is all by my will" when in fact he gave the decision to Ymir.

In AoT even though the future is ‘’set in stone’’ it still doesn’t take away agency from our characters. this is because aot aligns with the philosophy of compatibilism which we see through eren. the future is only set in stone because it ultimately aligns with his own desires. The anime cut one line but a very important one from the manga that highlights this aspect a lot and I would recommend for you to read chapter 130 (the chapter this episode adapted) if u want clarity on this.
as he says in this episode: ‘everything happened by my will’. yes the future is set in stone but it doesn’t mean eren/others are any less culpable for their actions. simply put in erens own words after he thinks of where it all began (hints at causal determinism):
    ‘it doesn’t matter’
this is eren’s choice and nothing takes away from that

Surrender was not an option cuz marley would just enslave the eldians and keep using them. I always felt Eren is a character trapped in his own personal/selfish idea of freedom, and as you mentioned the puppet looking Titan is a visual representation of it: a puppet of fate and a puppet of his ideals. It's interesting however when Eren says that it doesn't matter where it all started, be it when Ymir released the pigs (if she actually did), or when he was born, he has always been himself and the choices he made are given importance because of it. If we look back, Eren at 9 years of age killed two adult armed men, and didn't even recognize them as humans, but as some sort of beasts. We saw that Mikasa while remembering that moment, more than feeling gratitude, she felt fear. If Eren as always been like this, if this violent nature has always been present, then what did she see in him? I think it's an important question that she asked herself, and Mikasa reflecting on his feelings for Eren isn't something new as you said: it started all the way back, probably after the Liberio raid even. However, even if she only saw the more humane and caring aspect of him (the scarf scene), now she has the full picture. Armin is the same, he hoped he was wrong in feeling what Eren might do with the Founding Titan's power, he wanted to belive a partial Rumbling was what he was aiming for. I too when reading those chapters of the manga felt a partial Rumbling was his main goal to protect everyone in that moment, and I found myself in the same position as Armin and Mikasa when the full scale Rumbling was announced, I felt disappointed in Eren. But some time later I started to realize that if there was 1 person in the story that could've initiated this apocalypse, it was always gonna be Eren. We see that just 1 other character correctly guessed the terrefic chain of events that would occur if Eren obtained the Coordinate, and it is Reiner. Since the S2 finale, chapter 50 of the manga, Reiner was the first one to completely understand Eren and what he was capable to do. This explains and adds a further layer to their conversation in the basement. As the truth of the world is revealed to everyone above their heads, to us as viewers is revealed the mentality of those 2 (incredible) characters, it's basically a trip in both of their minds. Eren states that he is the same as Reiner, and reiterates the same concept even after Reiner admits that it weren't the circumstances or his environment to make him like that, he went forward with the mission because he wanted to do it for himself, to become a hero in the eyes of his mother and so to be respected by everyone. And Eren replies that, as he thought, they really are the same: selfish motivations, wanting to protect your friends and push on to gain your unattainable freedom. These 2 pushed themselves into hell and witnessed a different kind of hell. They marched forward together, just in different places of the world (and of course, environment and awful circumstances played a huge part, but it's not just that).
The scene with everyone happy together one last time was really needed, and I also appreciate you noticing the scene of Levi understanding the pickpocket kid situation and saving him, since Levi also grew up basically doing the same things. As for the Eren and Mikasa scene, man if only the world wasn't fucked up then maybe they could've been happy together, but there's just this tragic feeling behind every scene that denies every form of sharing mutual emotions with Eren, aside from Mikasa saying the truth about her feelings or not. Also about the facial expressions, maybe it's the anime fault but in the manga Eren is looking very emotional while talking to her, almost as if he was about to break down. I thought the anime did a decent job though, so I don't really agree with the "stoic" expression.
For Historia, I think Eren reminding her of her selfish choice in the Reiss's cave made so that Historia "allowed" letting Eren make his own selfish choice (as you said it's not that she could stop him by words, I mean she tried but the result was clear). I don't blame her to be honest, wating to live your life and make your own family while moving away from the scene is pretty damn understandable from her pov. Especially if this is the only way to not shorten your life for the remaining 13 years. To me it's important to notice that it was her choice to get pregnant, and not Eren suggesting it. It's not much, cause her character was a bit wasted in the second half of the story, but at least it's coherent with her character. Still, we got too little from her.
And finally the ending scene, you said it all, it's the big grim reminder, not only for Marley/the eldians in Liberio (just like the one in Part 1), but for the entire world.
Im, thank you for your discussions, it has been a great experience until now, it also helped me both with my English and with my personal understanding of AoT, its characters and its themes. A final thank you for the Mod Titan Sephizen, always keeping Im safe.

Potraying Eren as just a cruel crazy guy willing to destroy the world completely disregards his character. His honest thoughts all throughout the story, and the fact that he wanted to die in historia's hands to save humanity during the uprising arc just ephazise this. Eren was not a monster, he was a normal guy given the impossible choice. He learnt this from Armin himself, it was not something he was sure of it himself. We was not able to fight annie until he heard armin's words, about sacrificing something to achieve something. He is far more complex to just say that he was a murder. The violent nature was there, of course, but it only triggered when others were abused in an unjust way. He would cry and be happy for the people who tried to be better than the sad world let them. He was like that since he was born, before someone takes away his freedom he takes away theirs. Freedom is just a concept, it can be happiness, family, love, whatever you want it. Many can forget and just move on, but he can't because he is cursed by his love.

A comment from a different reaction vid:
The design of Eren's titan is not only horrifying but symbolic. The design is that of a bird cage and Eren is tied with it by strings like a puppet, representing Eren is a slave to his desires for freedom. " Everyone was a slave to somethin' "- Kenny Ackerman
The structure is also upside down like the hanged man in tarot card which means "ultimate surrender, sacrifice, suspended in time and of martyrdom and sacrifice to the greater good".
And finally, we see the wall of colossal titans still in front of Eren, even though they are no longer walls. Symbolising that Eren can never be free, or at least not yet anyway

Even more so now that Eren has tried to wipe them all out. Why are none of the characters even confronting Annie about all the atrocities she commited so callously against them? Why does Levi have no reaction to the murderer of his potential love interest? She just makes a funny face eating pie and they all laugh, like wtf. Then recruiting her to join them in their goal of what? Stopping the only way they are going to survive? Titans walking, not even running, not showing any specific anger directed towards someone or something, not focusing on anything in particular. And their complete lack of reaction to any damage that doesn't kill them on the spot. Not even a blink, or a second to stop or recover. No, they keep walking forward.
And the uncanny valley look given by the mutilated aspect of their faces, the very oddly proportioned body parts, the lack of skin...

Eren taking just one night to try and forget about what he knows is coming is both heart warming and gut wrenching. To see him actually smile in this beautiful moment with the people he loves and giving them but more importantly himself one last night of happiness together before it all goes so wrong is the epitome of tragic.

Truth be told, I think the season numbers make sense, in terms of whole arcs. The first season is the introduction arc. All the build up, up to the first titan-adjacent mystery: why is there a titan in the wall? Then the second season is the upping of stakes, and reveal of titan shifters. So the ending of that is a new important mystery: how can Eren control the titans? The third is the political arc where the inner walls had to be "remade" before the basement can finally be revealed. And it answered the greatest mystery of all: why are the people in the walls, and what happened to the outside world? The fourth season is the conclusion where the outside world and inner wall societies clash to see who will be victorious and survive in the end. It doesn't compute as well in terms of marketing, but the story can be divided in those 4 chunks, it's just that some of them are bigger than others.

I honestly think that people who hate the ending have this weird obsession with "chad Eren". They think he had some sort of character development that made him a chad, and are mad that he's no longer that in the end. It's obviously a facade he's putting on to accomplish his goal. A great example is when he's staring at the mirror saying "Tatakae" to himself. He doesn't want to do what he's doing, so he tries to instill confidence in himself in order to do what he has to do. People who hate the ending just have no idea what Eren and this story is about.

    • @maelstrom2313
      @maelstrom2313 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Most of those people are just not emotionally mature. You're right that they want to view Eren as a 2-dimensional "Chad" archetype when he is more complex than that. In reality, he's an emotionally stunted child who never got a chance to fully grow up due to the circumstances he found himself in. That's why we see during the Rumbling in S4 Part 3 that he's fully regressed into a child in his mind to cope with the horror of what he's doing. My own theory is that he's not the one actually controlling his actions. He's not free, but trapped in a time loop that has made him a pawn of either Ymir, to seek revenge on the entire world, or the titan parasite, to achieve its own goal of eradicating its competition, aka. the rest of humanity.

I haven't looked at Eren's deeds trough the perspective of self hatred before(althought it makes a lot of sense in light of season 3 and the Reiss Family Cave events). Thanks to that his rejection of Mikasa's feeling feels even more painful. He doesn't only push her away becasue of his knowledge of future events and his care for her(as well as care for the other members of the Scouts), but also beacasue of his inner self loathing(which reminds of Kenny and him calling himself "garbage" alongside his abanondment of Levi, saying he is not fit to be a parent), that makes him believe he isn't fit for a lover/a good friend. Despite him telling Zeke, that his life span is too short to do something in terms of a relationship, I believe that deep inside Eren would want nothing else, than to be happy with Mikasa.
This also gives me a new perspective on one thing: the titan shifters transforming trough self harm, that represnts them punishing themselves for their sins(not only beacuse of marleyan propaganda but also because of the things they had done and they are going to do).

I like how it's basically calling back to Reiner in 1x02. People are trying ti stop the Rumbling with canons - didn't work. So out of fear they start running and they can't do anything about the titan(s) marching on them and crushing everything in the way. They even used the same OST for both scenes (with Eren's entrance being more iconic for the OST - The earth rumbles and becomes red. I recommend checking out the lyrics if you are interested. To think this OST is here since s1.. Isayama basically spoiled even manga readers with it without us noticing, probably :D )

Even tho in his head he knows the majority of these people don't deserve this end and this is really crushing him, I feel like deep in his heart he still feels like he deserves his vengeance. Eren is a mess; even tho we understand his reasonings, I don't think this excuse or is enough to forgive neither him nor his accomplices, Floch and Historia. Eren and Floch will most definitely end up dead (I don't believe Floch is dead already, no body no death), but I'm sure Historia will go out unscathed, which is why I don't get when people say she was done dirty. She will end up fine, with a cute baby and still the queen, and probably no one will ever know the part she played in the end of the world; the only thing she'll have to deal with is her conscious, which can be an ok punishment, I guess 🤷🏿‍♀️ Characters like Mikasa, Armin, Reiner and Connie are in waay worse states than her

@@RaffyDGoat I guess, but to me people elevate Historia way too much. Don't get me wrong, I like her as well, but she was never a main character; like Ymir, she was a background character, elevated for a couple arcs when she was needed for the story, but when the arcs were concluded they went back to the background. Historia hasn't been relevant since the end of 3a, and to be quite honest she could easily have died during 3b and the story would go on the same overall. She was way luckier than Ymir and managed to stay alive, but then her presence must have become a slight annoyance to Isayama, who needed to come up with a reason for Zeke to stay in the story. Narratively speaking, exchanging Zeke for Historia would be the most lackluster thing in the world, considering Zeke's alliance with Eren is the thing bringing all the conflict for half this season. With all that in mind, I always thought the pregnancy was a good way out, specially because it highlighted the big difference between Ymir and Historia: Ymir being the most selfless character in the show, despite pretending the opposite the entire time, and Historia accepting who she really is, quite selfish in fact, finally letting go of her "good girl" facade and living for herself. I think it's a great end for her character arc and a way for her to honor Ymir, by living the way she wanted her to live. But then again, since I never considered Historia a main character, I never expected her to be actively involved in the resolution of the story. In my opinion (and please don't get mad at me, it's just an opinion) people gave Historia more importance than Isayama ever did, and that's the origin of so much disappointment. I don't think it's anyone's fault really. Like, if you think about it, nothing in the story really indicates her pregnancy has any importance on things to come: no main characters wonder about it or about the father, they don't even talk about it actually. I think Isayama tried to make it as irrelevant as possible in the story, but people still wanted it to mean something because they like Historia. And it does mean something, but not what people wanted, so they didn't like it or didn't really understand. Tho Isayama probably should have been more upfront form the start, maybe having a scene with Historia herself saying the pregnancy was a scheme right from the get go. But then again, the MPs do say it's a scheme on episode 10, but people don't take them into consideration because most people only believe in words that come out of the (""good"") main character's mouths 🤷🏿‍♀️🤷🏿‍♀️. So maybe, in reality, it's everyone's fault 🤔

Why would Isayama build up this amazing character and then basically write her out of the story? @@RaffyDGoat Historia's pregnancy actually makes sense for the story. She got pregnant because she didn't want to be transformed into a titan shifter. The 50 year plan required her to inherit Zeke's titan and have her kid eat her and repeat again until there will be no more hostility between the outside world and Paradis. Before, she was willing to become a titan but Eren revealed his plan of omnicide and while she opposed it, Eren guilt tripped her into following his plan and hence why she gave in and proposed to become pregnant. She cannot become a titan while pregnant, and that's why many MPs discredited her for being a coward (keep in mind that those MPs didn't know about the full rumbling and are only aware of the 50 year plan hence why their disappointment to Historia's initiative)

@@RaffyDGoat But I don't say it in a bad way, that's just how I see their parts in the story. I do love Ymir and I really like Historia (tho I'm quite tired of hearing about her after all the discussions her pregnancy generated this season). And you're right, she could have just gone into hiding, but she would have been persecuted to the ends of the island; she is too important, the MPs wouldn't let a stone left untouched in order to find her. It would be hell and they probably would end up finding her, not to mention running away would be a huge blow on her reign. In comparison, getting pregnant is much easier: nothing really changes for her, and once everything pass (if all goes to plan) she'll remain the queen and will have an heir. Farmer guy won't impact her life in any way, but since he's an old acquaintance of hers I imagine she thinks he'll be a good dad. And if you wanted her to take part in the story, disappearing to only comeback once the story ends isn't the same problem you have right now? Imo her being the one to suggest this pregnancy, effectively accepting Eren's plan and putting herself and the island above the entire world is extreme, yes, but quite in line with her character and the way she was set up to develop through the show. I think it's a fitting end for her 🤷🏿‍♀️

You could also consider the idea that Eren and Mikasa see the conflict in so radically different ways because they engage with causality in radically different ways. At this point it’s safe to say that Eren is losing himself; he’s living his present, the memories of the past and the memories of the future at the same time. He knows things are meant to be like this because he sees causality unfold in front of his eyes; Mikasa doesn’t, so she thinks of the possibilities. She lingers on choices she did or didn’t make.
It relates to the idea that, in a deterministic world, free will is but an illusion. I can live my whole life in that illusion, believing that I’m free to choose whatever path I want in life instead of determined by my past. However, if a perfect predictor is introduced, like in Eren’s case, the illusion of free will shatters.

This episode is around 10th best for me. Loved these parts in the manga (and they got moved to later in the anime) and I was super happy with the adaptation of everything, and its all so good for the characters and so impactful. But yeah there are so many amazing episodes that its hard picking best episodes. Also I think this show may honestly be better on rewatch.

I think it would be a good idea for a video to rank your favorite episodes and characters.

Yeah I don't think the production committee planned far enough ahead to anticipate 3 parts. Isayama had been saying since the Marley arc AOT was in its final stretch, so announcing the "final season" at the end of s3p2 seemed smart. But when you put it in perspective they announced the final season around the time chapter 119 released (the third ep of s4p2). The rumbling hadn't even started yet and as it would turn out the manga wouldn't end for another 20 chaps. I'd always expected they would adapt up to 122 in part 1 then the final rumbling section in a part 2 but as it turns out that wasnt the case. Very poor planning regardless.

I'm glad that the major issue with the show till now is the naming of the seasons 😂. I mean who tf cares content will still be the same. People will anyway watch

The only problem i have is that the people are hating on mappa because of this even though it was wit who named it final season

@@banana6108 Let's be honest: It's gonna be great recommending this to people in the future: "Yeah man, my favourite season is definitely The Final Season Part 3 Cour 1"

Hi, I would appreciate if you do a video about your top 10 favourite episodes, or characters before part 3.
