joyboy was first mentioned after the timeskip in fishman island, basically he is a person that existed 800 years ago and is the one who left the treasure of one piece that roger found. theres this whole 'void century' where 100 years of history was erased thru genocide and the government has always tried to hide it from the public, and joyboy is the figurehead of the people who got erased. there is still mystery about him but luffys fruit got revealed to be the human human fruit model nika (nika is the sungod who people call joyboy) that freed slaves back then after all this time when we thought it was just a rubber fruit he ate. luffys fruit is basically joyboys powers that is based off, but its interesting because just like joyboy who freed slaves with a smile on his face is the same thing luffy is doing in this story, so in a way he is joyboy reincarnated but he is still luffy, and the fruit being a zoan that has a will of its own means the fruit chose luffy to be eaten by him in his backstory. also begs the question why shanks had the fruit in the first place and if he knew about it
I think we’re just going to keep exploring gear 5, we won’t be seeing a gear 6. Maybe gear 5 variants like g4. There’s so much that needs to be explained and shown for gear 5, like I really think oda has barely scratched the surface of all of g5. The way this gear ties into the whole lore and story building of the manga, is simply insane. We also saw Luffy create glasses out of his gear 5 hair, with no explanation. They thing is devil fruits only limits are the users imagination, and since Luffy is a Demi god, his potential is boundless. We’re gonna see some crazy shit in this final saga and I can’t wait.
I think there WILL be another gear beyond 5. Something like Turbo or Overdrive and not a number, where his hair is actually fire and not just the smokey white that it is now. With all the fire themes, wouldn't surprise me to see Luffy embody that literally. He's already shown fire-like properties.
