I grew up here from 2003-2006. I started kindergarten in Germany, and I used to get my hair cut in the bunker under the shoppette, I remember waking to school with my friends and saying guten morgen to the Germans across the fence. I’m very grateful to have been able to grow up in such a beautiful place. Thank you for bringing back these memories. Thank you a million times.
This brings back so many memories. I went to the Elementary School 1986-1989 but we lived in Roman Way 1988-89. One of the best times of my young life!
I just saw these videos of Butzbach and Roman way housing I almost cried (the songs and the memories). We lived there for three years. Thanks for sharing.
Wow this brought tears to my eyes and so many good memories. Sad to see that it is closed. I always wanted to take my kids to see where I lived when I was their age. I use to live on Oregon across from the Elementary School. The fun I had while I was there 79-83. Loved going to the Imbiss Stand to get CurryWurst. Oh the memories, Oh the memories. Thank you for posting this.

Thank you so much for filming this. My father was stationed there and we lived in these units when I was 14. I am now 52. So many memories!!!!! THANKS!!!!!!!!
I always thought I’d get a chance to go back and walk down memory lane. So sad that I won’t, but so thankful for you making this video so I can in some way. My family pretty much started in building 6525. We thought we were big stuff when they gave us a four bedroom.😊 My wife was always scared about the laundry room in the basement. I was there from 97-00. Just before the war jumped off, but we were all over Macedonia, Bosnia, and Kosovo. CONUS troops had no piece of that. My wife kept track of the days I was home and out of three years I was home barely one. USAREUR was where you went to train, train, train. Best times of my Army career. Thanks again!
I hear you and agree with you, been back 7 times since 1970. Just can't get the butterflies out of my stomach every time I would walk through the housing area. I turned from a adolescent to a man in Roman Way. Hoooa , to all who have experienced "Pleasantville", at least for a few years.
Great video, brings back a lot of memories. I lived at 4F Georgia Rd. for 4 years, 1979-1983......7th, 8th & 9th grade, Giessen Jr. High and 10th grade at Frankfurt High. In those four years, my friends and I roamed all over that neighborhood.
So sad that it is all closed down. I was there from 83 to 85 and went to Butzbach Elementary. Anyone remember Frau Voishling? LOL she taught German there and she terrified me haha!
YES!! But it seems they were all Miss Frauvoishling! LOL there was (2) of them.... the first one had fairly long hair then the next year we had a short hair one, I think she was the mean one lol I was there same year. remember the trailers ?? then they started to build

Oh, damn! HOME!!! TWICE!!! Lived there 1965-67 (Michigan Rd.) and again 1974-77 (Georgia Rd.). I started school at Butzbach Elementary and graduated from FAHS. I understand the family of the old farmer the U.S. leased the property from rents the housing out to guest workers. Achtlandd, I remember Betty, too. She was the last stop on the way up to the Schwimmbad. Rosie ran the other Imbiss and I used to stop at her place when I got off the bus.
Wow, these videos affected me more than I thought they would. My name is John Grabowski, my older sister's name is Cathy. When we arrived I was halfway through the 5th grade, and we left in the middle of my 8th grade year (Giessen Jr. High).

If anyone is interested, go to Google Earth Pro, type in Virginia str., Butzbach, Germany. It will take you to the latest satelite imagery. You will see a few of the old building remained, that have been renovated. Toward the west [left] you will see new single family housing and some roads are gone. My 12-A Michigan Rd building, along with the whole damn road is gone. Anyway,On the top is a row of icons/buttons to click, click the one that looks like a globe, to the left of the sunrise button. That will open up a "time slider" just below in the latest satelite image.Use you mouse to slide the button to the left and the image will change to earlier dates of the same image on your screen. You can go back to 2009, when all the original buildings and roads you remember, were there. The Officer's Quarters [Texas Rd] are still there, renovated to condos. Some of the lower buildings, closer to the old entrance of the Roman Way Housing Area are now Apartments. I'm due to go for a last visit in fall of 2018, been back already 6 times.Like the stories we tell our grandkids, start the same way......Long ago and Far Away......we just finish them different ;)We can never replace those times, just remember them. Happy Memories
