    Very entertaining again, Charlie. I flew into Welshpool for the first time a few months ago, loved the approach into the valley. That looked like a wonderful day for flying 👌👏

    Is it still a legal requirement to carry an up to date chart in case the magic box decides to go on holiday mid flight?

      As far as I know, yes, and I always do have one on board.

    I fly from Gamston amd I want go to go to Welshpool which is the farthest I will have been since doing my PPL. Would you recommend only doing that after I get a my IR or do you I think it’s safe to go VFR since the great British weather is less predictable than the stock market ?

    • @CharlieLamdin
      @CharlieLamdin  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m no expert or instructor, but as long as you always set out fully prepared to turn back (or divert) if you encounter unexpected conditions, then on a good VFR day you shouldn’t have any problems getting into Welshpool. If in doubt, don’t hesitate, divert or turn back. Always know where your preferred diversion airfields are so that deciding to go to one doesn’t feel like an overwhelming decision.

    Apparently if the moving map is in date then that is ok although I could be wrong. Last time I was flying and I didnt use the map as backup, I lost SkyDemon for a scary few minutes because skyecho fell off. Eventually got the thing back but should have being more attention to the map

    • @CharlieLamdin
      @CharlieLamdin  ปีที่แล้ว

      My SkyEcho is not reliable. You cannot rely solely on SkyDemon. Always have a backup very close to hand, or be confident with a chart and dead reckoning!

    Is the iPad distracting you from lookout ?

    • @CharlieLamdin
      @CharlieLamdin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a fair question, as I can see that the edits often make it look that way, especially in this video. But if you could see a real-time unedited cut of this, you'd see me mostly looking straight out of the front windscreen most of the time. 👍

      The skydemon altitude will be based on the iPad barometer standard atmosphere setting of 1013.25 hpa hence it will always differ to your altimeter readout in the aircraft if the sub scale is set to anything other than 1013.

    Skydemon or any other non-WAAS GPS should not be used for altitude use due to the known altitude errors associated with non-WAAS.
    Either use your aircraft pressure altimeter or a WAAS GPS if equipped.

    • @CharlieLamdin
      @CharlieLamdin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I never use SkyDemon for altitude readings, I just happened to notice it was miles out!

    • @GreatWesternAirsports
      @GreatWesternAirsports 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should have said my comment was for general appreciation as there's more than a few who are using their phones or tablets with Skydemon or other software very often relying on them for primary altitude without understanding the errors associated with GPS altitude.
      Love your videos Charlie, please keep them coming and your daughter, so so cute!

      Thanks for that! Plenty of videos still to come. Also, I'm looking forward to having the equipment to do RNAV approaches, which I don't have yet. My Garmin GNS 430 and 530 are both non-WAAS.

    Interesting TEM en route. However I would question your TEM when creating a vlog under a basic service. You had plenty of distractions going on, not least your out of date chart (£200 burger, but not £20 for an up to date chart) With all you had going on a Traffic Service would have more sense. Before the trolls and flamers launch at me I’m a 17,500 hour ATPL fixed wing and aeroplane, who also flies a lot of GA. You’ll often find me at Soho Farm in one of the fancy helicopters that fly the guests in and out, and at Enstone in C150 or Vans RV7. Good VLOG, and my comment is meant as constructive criticism.

      @CharlieLamdin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello John, and thanks for taking the time to share your views, which I always take as constructive. You make several points, allow me to respond to each:
      1. Vlogging under a basic service. Fair point. My view is that it's literally no different to talking to a passenger. All my chat on camera is spontaneous and unplanned, so chatting to a camera is no different to chatting to a passenger. However, your point makes me think 2 things: Firstly, it would be safer to have a traffic service, so why not, it's a great suggestion. Secondly, in 2022 I'm planning to do far more IFR flights (even if conditions are VFR) to make IR flying something that comes more easily, rather than the rare and challenging thing that is currently is.
      2. £200 burger v £20 chart. I can assure you that if the chart is out of date (and I'm not saying that it is!) it has nothing to do with false economies. I am not one of those penny-wise, pound-foolish pilots. Another commenter raised the question, are SkyDemon charts not acceptable (as they are constantly updated and therefore arguably better than paper) especially when I have them on backup devices as well? Genuine question.
      3. Am always keen to learn whatever I can from experienced pilots, so if I catch you at Enstone, come and have lunch with me at Soho Farm House!
      Safe flying, and thank you again for your feedback. I will use a traffic service sooner and more often thanks to this.
