God, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll: An Interview with Alice Cooper

  • In this exclusive one hour interview, Pastor and Evangelist Greg Laurie sits down with rock legend Alice Cooper. Alice Cooper is widely considered to be the father of "Shock Rock" and has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. While he is known for his music career, most do not know that he is a committed Christian.
In this sprawling conversation recorded at, "The Rock" (a Teen Center created and started by Alice), Cooper and Laurie chat about his journey to faith, and how he has used his faith in Jesus Christ to help at-risk young men in his community.
Growing up in a Christian home, Cooper always knew he needed Christ. But it took a dramatic turn in a drug-induced haze when he realized he needed to recommit to Jesus Christ or he was finished. The son and grandson of preachers, Cooper knew who Jesus was and knew that Christianity was true, yet he wanted to walk his path-a trail that led him to the heights of stardom, partying, and calling friend some of the biggest names in show business.
Then it all changed. His marriage was falling apart and Cooper was in the pits of alcohol and drug use when he decided to quit and get clean. He began going to church and says that it was fear of God that brought him around, that he was terrified of Hell, and it was fear that saved him, but the love of Christ that grew him.
The conversation also includes musings by Cooper and Laurie about the so-called “27 Club,” various legends of rock and roll, as well as a discussion about depression, suicide, drugs, alcohol abuse, and the life it leads one to. The conversation in its entirety is a testament to the power of God and His transforming power and forgiveness, if we only accept Him and allow Him to change us for the better.

When I was a child in like the 5th grade I asked Jesus into my heart. Unfortunately I did not understand all that He had gone through or what dying on the cross for really meant. I slipped away the summer of 7th grade. I discovered girls and marijuana and rock and roll music. One of the concerts I went to after high school was Alice Cooper. It was a great show and I had a great time. Years had gone by and my younger brother was killed by a drunk driver. I always knew God existed I just didn't know much about Him. What I thought I knew was that God had taken the person from me whom I loved the most. I do not think anyone understood how mad at God that I was. I yelled at Him, I probably called Him every hurtful thing I could think of. I blamed God and then I blamed the person. The guy lost his license for ten years and was placed on probation but got no jail time. This made me even more furious. I was drowning in hate and anger. I went to bars and got drunk and picked fights with people twice my size. No one would fight me. You see I wanted to hurt people as much as I hurt and I am not sure why. My girlfriends mother whom I had never met invited us to her church over the phone. We went to church and people were singing and praising Jesus while lifting their hands in the air. I did not understand why. In my drunken cries to the Lord I demanded that he reveal Himself to me. Obviously God was patient with me but He revealed Himself to me while at that church. He got a hold of my heart and my brain. Yes He spoke to me. Not in an audible voice but I heard Him inside of my head and inside of my heart. He told me that He was real and that I wasn't alone. I laid it down on that altar. I cried my eyes out. I wasn't alone anymore but I still did not understand it all. It did not happen all at once but years later I had come to many terms about many things and although it took me twenty years to be able to say I forgive him with the help of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit that anger and hate went away. A great weight was lifted the moment I said Lord I forgive him. In all of this time God took booze, and cigarettes away. He did amazing things that if i kept typing would be way too long to read here. He revealed Himself to me because He loves me not because I demanded He do so. No one has control over God. Because He loves me I can face tomorrow and I am still here and with His help I do face whatever tomorrows I have left. If you're here and you need Him and read this then trust me if you call upon the Lord, He will help you, you just have to be sincere. Tell Him how you feel and what you need. If you come to Him you will never be the same ever again.

I’ve been a fan of Alice since I was 12 years old. Lost my older brother back then in 75 and somehow Alice seemed to understand my grief and my anger and confusion. Fast forward years later; I meet and fall in love the summer of Alice’s trash album was released. 2 years after that my youngest daughter was born under too many miraculous circumstances to type here. And she all on her own became a huge Alice fan. She went with her Daddy to see Alice in concert in Boston when she was just 9 years old. I gave up my own ticket because she just begged me to see him. She adored him. Still does all these years later. Other people would ask her why she liked him and didn’t he scare her. She said no, I can see his light. There’s so much more I could say but maybe if I ever get the chance to speak with Alice or my daughter does. We can share more. Anyway he may dress in black, and put on a “show” for the fans. But some of us lucky or blessed few can “see” his true heart and light. Thank you Alice for your great songs and music. For being there for me when I myself was a teen girl going through a very sad, difficult time in my own life. It felt like you understood. Thank you 🙏🏻 May God always bless you and your family. Much love and respect from a long time fan, an anonymous face, just a simple Mom now who also loves rock and roll and God too.

Alice is totally correct about drinking.. a friend of mine he was my sponsor in AA told me if you go to a barber shop every day.. eventually you’ll get a haircut.. I still remember that and I have been sober since 1987.. good advice..

    • @lucyswannsunsafespace7313
      @lucyswannsunsafespace7313 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

stevensrspcplusmc That is a beautiful analogy about the circles you run in, places you frequent, music you listen to, etc. Moving on from an addiction, any addiction, is about changing your life. I’ve never done drugs (pot a few times but ugh 🤢, made me feel horrible. I hated that feeling). I used to drink, and got to the point that I drank every weekend, to excess. I just did it to have fun, but just stopped. I no longer had the “taste” for it once I was saved. My demon is cigarettes. I cannot shake smoking. I quit for almost 2 years, physically quit, but there wasn’t a day that went by that I didn’t want one. I used vapes, and tried to step down the nicotine content slowly. The lower the nicotine, the more emotionally unstable I became. Toward the end when I broke down and just smoked (bummed one off my SIL), I was an emotional wreck. Crying all the time, very self critical, just a hot mess. Well, I tried an anti-depressant, and that was AWEFUL. I would rather feel everything than nothing at all. I also have multiple sclerosis, so couldn’t take chantix. I don’t believe I’m destined to a life of smoking, it’s just that God hasn’t taken that from me. I come from a long line of raging alcoholics from both sides, and I could see where I would’ve been one too, because I wasn’t even thinking about it when I drank, just thinking about having fun.
But, I was rambling. The barber shop reference was wonderful, and I can see how it would be life changing for someone willing to apply that advice in their day to day. Thanks for sharing! 😊

@@lucyswannsunsafespace7313 I prayed hard on the smoking thing. I gave up the world. No cable tv, no sports, no traditions of man. Threw away all Pagan articles out of my life. Trees, ornaments, halloween costumes, hellywood movies. Then, my life began to change for the good. God gave me back my life that satan took from me. After praying one day God told me to go to the glove box and throw out the pack of cigarettes, and the one in the house, and all my vapor accessories. Everything in the BFI bin. I was done. I couldn't do it without his power. He gave me the will power to achieve this, it wasn't me. Good luck in quitting. There will be a day, if you really want to quit, pray and God will help. There is no power greater than he! Blessings.

But I will tell you how I KNOW Alice Cooper is saved. That is if you believe Gods Word (The Bible) to be Prefect And True!
From the NIV, Romans 10: 9)That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord" and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10) For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
For one thing I think Alice Cooper did a Great Job Confessing With Is Mouth! I myself as a Believers think we need more people like Alice Cooper and Brain "Head" Welch. Who are taking the message to others most of us couldn't reach.
I Believe There Is Only One Way To Get Into Heaven. Which I think Romans covers nice. I also believe the Church I attend is not my ticket in to Heaven it's were I go learn about My Lord And Savior! To me the "Church" is a body of believers.
With that being said.... There are a lot False "Religions" out there. Which is why I choose NOT to call myself a Religious Man! I call myself a Christian! Save By Grace!!! I also as a person who has A.D.D. I Thank My Lord and Father for making it simple to be saved. Now I'm not even sure if the Dog is following Christ. Anyway, I'm glad to see what God is doing in Alice's life. I hope he is able to lead others to Christ as well.

Yes, pray for Johhny Depp beautiful man that has a good heart, and he really needs to come to our Lord Jesus!!! I met him once briefly, at a movie premiere and had been standing all day, they wouldn't give a lot of time to greet fan's, but I had my rollator and cane, I was on the corner opposite side of the theater, hut my friend kept saying it's her birthday and pointing at me and Johnny looked walked over straight to me and took my hand and rubbed my arm, and said happy birthday love. I had a movie I wanted signed, he was surprised by my choice of DVD, and signed it. Then the crowd around me was pressing in and the barrier bar, was starting for tilt like we were going to pile on him, and I said help Johnny they are going to push this over and I am going to fall?, so it would be best if you moved, and he smiled at me, lingered just a few seconds and crossed the street to the theater, almost seemed as though he walked over to greet me specifically, he was so sweet!! After he left everyone kind of backed away and said, what did he say to you, etc. For a few minutes, I a disabled old lady, and I'll never forget his kindness, I felt very special in that moment!!!

The music.. the montage of stories that he lived was incredible! I lived for Sunday nights and was sad when they came to an end. But look at the guy now..
