People are gonna suggest that the next song you guys should listen to is Toxicity. Toxicity and Chop Suey come from the same album (their second album). Personally I think you should start with Sugar from their first album. SOAD has technically been a band since '94 but their current lineup didn't start until '97.
    Serj Tankian - Lead Singer
Daron Malakian - Lead guitar and Co Vocalist
Shavo Odadjian - Bass and Backing Vocals
    John Dolmayan - Drummer
This band is extremely political. I would suggest pulling up lyrics when watching music videos or finding lyric videos to follow. Serj though an amazing singer (one of the best in my opinion) has a tendency speed up, growl, or scream lyrics to the point its hard to understand. Everything they do though has a purpose.

When I hear this song and acknowledge the lyrics, I’m somehow brought to tears towards the end. I think this is probably because of the fact that not only are they such good singers producing one of the most sorrowful melodies that just spirals down, but the lyrics are in their perfect habit. I can’t imagine these lyrics with any other tone.

This song always reminds me of 9-11, because people wanted it banned from the radio, as well as "Bodies" by Drowning Pool in the days following. They didn't succeed, but the stations in Southern New England removed both songs from their playlists for several weeks. I saw SOAD at River Rave in Foxborough, MA in May, 2001, and I couldn't take my eyes off of Daron Malakian. He was one of a handful of musicians that day who was able to rock the stadium. Several bigger stars just had no idea how to project their energy in such a big venue. 💖

Did you say the lead singer is underrated? I don't think so. He is well appreciated as one of the best singers in rock history with a crazy range, often named in the same sentence as Frank Zappa, Mike Patton or Freddy Mercury. And everyone wants to do collabs with him. He released a bunch of solo-albums too. Even one with an orchestra. He's a true vocal artist. He screams, shrieks, growls, raps and smoothly sings melodies, almost operatic. He can reach awesome high notes.

You definitely need to check out Puscifer, one of Maynard James Keenan's other bands. Horizons is a good song. There's a live version of Vagina Mine out there that's awesome (it's in Germany--can't remember all the details, but it'll probably be the first result if you search "Vagina Mine live").
You'll probably like A Perfect Circle if you like Tool, but Puscifer is a lot different. They started out as Maynard's personal side project, where he'd work with all of his ideas that didn't fit Tool or A Perfect Circle. A lot of the early stuff is weird, with joke songs like Cuntry Boner. But then Carina Round joined the band as a second singer (she isn't really backup--more of a co-lead singer) and they developed a distinct sound as a band. Much more electronic and generally more chill.

I missed out on the contemporary enjoyment of SOAD. They are 100% my kind of band.
Sirius radio made me a ridiculous fan.
    Looking forward to this

I think Sugar maybe the closest to rap with his voice style of quick speaking parts and cadence. They did do a cover of Wutangs- Shame song with RZA. So you can hear how Serj sounds like with rap verses. Lol

This song was originally just called suicide, but the record label told them to change it. Chop Suey means suicide chopped in half

Another collab with Serj from SOAD called Feel Good, other songs you two should check out from Hed Pe are, Suffa, Renegade, Killing Time, Bartender, Ground, Raise Hell or Blackout. Thx & keep the great reactions coming 👊🤘

This song f’n rocks but always brings me to tears. The way society denigrates the people we lose to addiction and suicide, how they tend to be shamed even in death, is disgusting. I’ve lost good friends and I will remember them for the joy they brought. That’s why I love this song.

I met Mick Foley back in 2004. He was at the BWI airport in Baltimore, MD when my husband was returning back to Iraq. He was there to see the soldiers.
